< Genesis 2 >

1 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.
Thus were finished the heavens and the earth, and all their host.
2 And by the seventh day God had finished the work He had been doing; so on that day He rested from all His work.
And God had finished on the seventh day his work which he had made, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because on that day He rested from all the work of creation that He had accomplished.
And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it; because thereon he had rested from all his work which God had created in making it.
4 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made them.
These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, on the day that the Lord God made earth and heaven.
5 Now no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth, nor had any plant of the field sprouted; for the LORD God had not yet sent rain upon the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground.
And every plant of the field was not yet on the earth, and every herb of the field had not yet grown; for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and man was not yet there to till the ground.
6 But springs welled up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground.
But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.
7 Then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being.
And the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living being.
8 And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, where He placed the man He had formed.
And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden to the eastward, and he put there the man whom he had formed.
9 Out of the ground the LORD God gave growth to every tree that is pleasing to the eye and good for food. And in the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
And the Lord God caused to grow out of the ground every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food; and the tree of life in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
10 Now a river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it branched into four headwaters:
And a river went out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it was parted, and became four principal streams.
11 The name of the first river is Pishon; it winds through the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold.
The name of the first is Pishon, the same which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold.
12 And the gold of that land is pure, and bdellium and onyx are found there.
And the gold of that land is good; there is the bdellium and the onyx stone.
13 The name of the second river is Gihon; it winds through the whole land of Cush.
And the name of the second river is Gihon, the same which compasseth the whole land of Cush.
14 The name of the third river is Hiddekel; it runs along the east side of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.
And the name of the third river is Hiddekel, the same which floweth towards the east of Assyria; and the fourth river is the Euphrates.
15 Then the LORD God took the man and placed him in the Garden of Eden to cultivate and keep it.
And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden, to till it, and to keep it.
16 And the LORD God commanded him, “You may eat freely from every tree of the garden,
And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat;
17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.”
But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it; for on the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
18 The LORD God also said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make for him a suitable helper.”
And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a help suitable for him.
19 And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and He brought them to the man to see what he would name each one. And whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name.
And the Lord God had formed out of the ground every beast of the field, and every fowl of the heaven, and he brought them unto the man to see what he would call them; and whatsoever the man would call every living creature, that should be its name.
20 The man gave names to all the livestock, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.
And the man gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the heaven, and to every beast of the field; but for man there was not found a help suitable for him.
21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep, and while he slept, He took one of the man’s ribs and closed up the area with flesh.
And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof.
22 And from the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man, He made a woman and brought her to him.
And the Lord God formed the rib which he had taken from the man into a woman, and brought her unto the man.
23 And the man said: “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for out of man she was taken.”
And the man said, This time it is bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; this shall be called Woman, [[Ishah, ]] because out of Man [[Ishi]] was this one taken.
24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.
Therefore doth a man leave his father and his mother, and cleave unto his wife, and they become one flesh.
25 And the man and his wife were both naked, and they were not ashamed.
And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
