Exodus 1
1 These are the names of the sons of Israel who went to Egypt with Jacob, each with his family:
Estos son los nombres de los hijos de Israel que entraron con Jacob en Egipto, cada uno con su familia:
2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah;
Rubén, Simeón, Leví, Judá,
3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin;
Isacar, Zabulón, Benjamín,
4 Dan and Naphtali; Gad and Asher.
Dan, Neftalí, Gad y Aser.
5 The descendants of Jacob numbered seventy in all, including Joseph, who was already in Egypt.
Todas las personas descendientes directos de Jacob fueron 70, pero José [ya] estaba en Egipto.
6 Now Joseph and all his brothers and all that generation died,
José murió, y todos sus hermanos, y toda aquella generación.
7 but the Israelites were fruitful and increased rapidly; they multiplied and became exceedingly numerous, so that the land was filled with them.
Pero los hijos de Israel fueron fecundos y aumentaron grandemente. Se multiplicaron, y fueron aumentados y muy fortalecidos de tal manera que la tierra se llenó de ellos.
8 Then a new king, who did not know Joseph, came to power in Egypt.
Entonces se levantó en Egipto un nuevo rey que no conoció a José.
9 “Look,” he said to his people, “the Israelites have become too numerous and too powerful for us.
Él dijo a su pueblo: Ciertamente el pueblo de los hijos de Israel es más numeroso y fuerte que nosotros.
10 Come, let us deal shrewdly with them, or they will increase even more; and if a war breaks out, they may join our enemies, fight against us, and leave the country.”
Vamos, procedamos con astucia contra ellos, no sea que se multipliquen, y en el caso de una guerra, se unan también con los que nos aborrecen, luchen contra nosotros y se vayan de esta tierra.
11 So the Egyptians appointed taskmasters over the Israelites to oppress them with forced labor. As a result, they built Pithom and Rameses as store cities for Pharaoh.
Entonces les impusieron capataces de trabajos forzados para que los oprimieran con sus cargas. Así se edificaron las ciudades de almacenaje Pitón y Ramsés para Faraón.
12 But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and flourished; so the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites.
Pero cuanto más los oprimían, más se multiplicaban y esparcían, hasta que [los egipcios] sintieron aversión hacia los hijos de Israel.
13 They worked the Israelites ruthlessly
Los egipcios obligaron con dureza a trabajar a los hijos de Israel.
14 and made their lives bitter with hard labor in brick and mortar, and with all kinds of work in the fields. Every service they imposed was harsh.
Amargaron su vida con el duro trabajo de preparar arcilla y hacer ladrillos, con toda [clase] de labores del campo y trabajos que les imponían con rigor.
15 Then the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, whose names were Shiphrah and Puah,
Entonces el rey de Egipto habló a las parteras de las hebreas, una de las cuales se llamaba Sifra, y la otra Fúa,
16 “When you help the Hebrew women give birth, observe them on the birthstools. If the child is a son, kill him; but if it is a daughter, let her live.”
y dijo: Cuando asistan a las mujeres hebreas en sus partos, al observar en la silla de parto que es un hijo, mátenlo, y si es una hija, que viva.
17 The midwives, however, feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt had instructed; they let the boys live.
Pero las parteras temieron a ʼElohim, y no hicieron según lo que el rey de Egipto les ordenó, sino dejaron vivir a los niños.
18 So the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and asked them, “Why have you done this? Why have you let the boys live?”
El rey egipcio llamó a las parteras y les dijo: ¿Por qué hacen esto de dejar vivir a los niños?
19 The midwives answered Pharaoh, “The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they are vigorous and give birth before a midwife arrives.”
Las parteras respondieron a Faraón: Porque las mujeres hebreas no son como las egipcias, pues son vigorosas y dan a luz antes que la partera llegue a ellas.
20 So God was good to the midwives, and the people multiplied and became even more numerous.
El pueblo se multiplicó y se fortaleció muchísimo. ʼElohim favoreció a las parteras.
21 And because the midwives feared God, He gave them families of their own.
Por haber temido las parteras a ʼElohim, Él les concedió familias a ellas.
22 Then Pharaoh commanded all his people: “Every son born to the Hebrews you must throw into the Nile, but every daughter you may allow to live.”
Entonces Faraón ordenó a todo su pueblo: Echen al Nilo a todo hijo que nazca, pero a toda hija sálvenle la vida.
