Esther 3
1 After these events, King Xerxes honored Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, elevating him to a position above all the princes who were with him.
Après cela, le roi Assuérus éleva Aman, fils d’Amadath, qui était de la race d’Agag; et il mit son trône au-dessus de tous les princes qu’il avait auprès de lui.
2 All the royal servants at the king’s gate bowed down and paid homage to Haman, because the king had commanded that this be done for him. But Mordecai would not bow down or pay homage.
Et tous les serviteurs du roi qui étaient à la porte du palais, fléchissaient les genoux et adoraient Aman; ainsi, en effet, leur avait ordonné le souverain. Le seul Mardochée ne fléchissait point le genou devant lui et ne l’adorait point.
3 Then the royal servants at the king’s gate asked Mordecai, “Why do you disobey the command of the king?”
Les serviteurs du roi qui gardaient la porte du palais, lui dirent: Pourquoi n’observes-tu pas comme les autres l’ordre du roi?
4 Day after day they warned him, but he would not comply. So they reported it to Haman to see whether Mordecai’s behavior would be tolerated, since he had told them he was a Jew.
Et comme ils le lui disaient très souvent, et que lui ne les écoutait pas, ils en avertirent Aman, désirant savoir s’il persisterait dans sa résolution, car il leur avait dit qu’il était Juif.
5 When Haman saw that Mordecai would not bow down or pay him homage, he was filled with rage.
Lorsqu’Aman l’eut appris, et que, par expérience, il eut reconnu que Mardochée ne fléchissait point le genou devant lui et ne l’adorait point, il fut très irrité.
6 And when he learned the identity of Mordecai’s people, he scorned the notion of laying hands on Mordecai alone. Instead, he sought to destroy all of Mordecai’s people, the Jews, throughout the kingdom of Xerxes.
Et il compta pour rien de porter ses mains sur le seul Mardochée; car il avait appris qu’il était de la nation juive, et il aima mieux perdre toute la nation des Juifs qui étaient dans le royaume d’Assuérus.
7 In the twelfth year of King Xerxes, in the first month, the month of Nisan, the Pur (that is, the lot) was cast before Haman to determine a day and month. And the lot fell on the twelfth month, the month of Adar.
Au premier mois (dont le nom est Nisan), la douzième année du règne d’Assuérus, le sort qui en hébreu se dit phur, fut jeté dans l’urne devant Aman, auquel jour et auquel mois la nation des Juifs devait être exterminée; et le douzième mois, qui est appelé Adar, sortit.
8 Then Haman informed King Xerxes, “There is a certain people scattered and dispersed among the peoples of every province of your kingdom. Their laws are different from everyone else’s, and they do not obey the king’s laws. So it is not in the king’s best interest to tolerate them.
Et Aman dit au roi Assuérus: Il y a un peuple dispersé dans toutes les provinces de votre royaume, divisé lui-même, ayant des lois et des cérémonies nouvelles, et de plus méprisant les décrets du roi. Or vous savez très bien qu’il importe à votre royaume qu’il ne devienne pas plus insolent par la licence.
9 If it pleases the king, let a decree be issued to destroy them, and I will deposit ten thousand talents of silver into the royal treasury to pay those who carry it out.”
S’il vous plaît ainsi, décrétez qu’il périsse, et je pèserai dix mille talents aux trésoriers de votre épargne.
10 So the king removed the signet ring from his finger and gave it to Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of the Jews.
Le roi tira donc de sa main l’anneau dont il se servait, et le donna à Aman, fils d’Amadath, de la race d’Agag, ennemi des Juifs,
11 “Keep your money,” said the king to Haman. “These people are given to you to do with them as you please.”
Et lui dit: Que l’argent que tu promets soit pour toi; fais de ce peuple ce qui te plaira.
12 On the thirteenth day of the first month, the royal scribes were summoned and the order was written exactly as Haman commanded the royal satraps, the governors of each province, and the officials of each people, in the script of each province and the language of every people. It was written in the name of King Xerxes and sealed with the royal signet ring.
Et les scribes du roi furent appelés en Nisan, premier mois, le treizième jour du même mois, et l’on écrivit, au nom du roi Assuérus, comme l’avait commandé Aman, à tous les satrapes du roi, aux juges des provinces et des diverses nations, avec une variété de langage telle que chaque nation pouvait lire et entendre; et les lettres, scellées de l’anneau du roi,
13 And the letters were sent by couriers to each of the royal provinces with the order to destroy, kill, and annihilate all the Jews—young and old, women and children—and to plunder their possessions on a single day, the thirteenth day of Adar, the twelfth month.
Furent envoyées par les courriers du roi à toutes les provinces, afin qu’on tuât et qu’on exterminât tous les Juifs, depuis l’enfant jusqu’au vieillard, les petits enfants et les femmes, en un seul jour, c’est-à-dire le treizième jour du douzième mois qui est appelé Adar, et que leurs biens fussent pillés.
14 A copy of the text of the edict was to be issued in every province and published to all the people, so that they would be ready on that day.
Or la substance des lettres était que toutes les provinces sussent son intention, et se préparassent pour le susdit jour.
15 The couriers left, spurred on by the king’s command, and the edict was issued in the citadel of Susa. Then the king and Haman sat down to drink, but the city of Susa was in confusion.
Les courriers qui avaient été envoyés se hâtaient de remplir l’ordre du roi. Et aussitôt l’édit fut affiché dans Suse, le roi et Aman célébrant un festin, et tous les Juifs qui étaient dans la ville pleurant.
