Ecclesiastes 1
1 These are the words of the Teacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem:
Dies sind die Reden des Predigers, des Sohns Davids, des Königs zu Jerusalem.
2 “Futility of futilities,” says the Teacher, “futility of futilities! Everything is futile!”
Es ist alles ganz eitel, sprach der Prediger, es ist alles ganz eitel.
3 What does a man gain from all his labor, at which he toils under the sun?
Was hat der Mensch mehr von all seiner Mühe, die er hat unter der Sonne?
4 Generations come and generations go, but the earth remains forever.
Ein Geschlecht vergehet, das andere kommt; die Erde aber bleibet ewiglich.
5 The sun rises and the sun sets; it hurries back to where it rises.
Die Sonne gehet auf und gehet unter und läuft an ihren Ort, daß sie wieder daselbst aufgehe.
6 The wind blows southward, then turns northward; round and round it swirls, ever returning on its course.
Der Wind gehet gen Mittag und kommt herum zur Mitternacht und wieder herum an den Ort, da er anfing.
7 All the rivers flow into the sea, yet the sea is never full; to the place from which the streams come, there again they flow.
Alle Wasser laufen ins Meer, noch wird das Meer nicht voller; an den Ort, da sie herfließen, fließen sie wider hin.
8 All things are wearisome, more than one can describe; the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear content with hearing.
Es ist alles Tun so voll Mühe, daß niemand ausreden kann. Das Auge siehet sich nimmer satt und das Ohr höret sich nimmer satt.
9 What has been will be again, and what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.
Was ist's, das geschehen ist? Eben das hernach geschehen wird. Was ist's, das man getan hat? Eben das man hernach wieder tun wird; und geschieht nichts Neues unter der Sonne.
10 Is there a case where one can say, “Look, this is new”? It has already existed in the ages before us.
Geschieht auch etwas, davon man sagen möchte: Siehe, das ist neu? Denn es ist zuvor auch geschehen in vorigen Zeiten, die vor uns gewesen sind.
11 There is no remembrance of those who came before, and those yet to come will not be remembered by those who follow after.
Man gedenkt nicht, wie es zuvor geraten ist; also auch des, das hernach kommt, wird man nicht gedenken bei denen, die hernach sein werden.
12 I, the Teacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
Ich, Prediger, war König über Israel zu Jerusalem
13 And I set my mind to seek and explore by wisdom all that is done under heaven. What a heavy burden God has laid upon the sons of men to occupy them!
und begab mein Herz, zu suchen und zu forschen weislich alles, was man unter dem Himmel tut. Solche unselige Mühe hat Gott den Menschenkindern gegeben, daß sie sich drinnen müssen quälen.
14 I have seen all the things that are done under the sun, and have found them all to be futile, a pursuit of the wind.
Ich sah an alles Tun, das unter der Sonne geschieht; und siehe, es war alles eitel und Jammer.
15 What is crooked cannot be straightened, and what is lacking cannot be counted.
Krumm kann nicht schlecht werden, noch der Fehl gezählet werden.
16 I said to myself, “Behold, I have grown and increased in wisdom beyond all those before me who were over Jerusalem, and my mind has observed a wealth of wisdom and knowledge.”
Ich sprach in meinem Herzen: Siehe, ich bin herrlich worden und habe mehr Weisheit denn alle, die vor mir gewesen sind zu Jerusalem; und mein Herz hat viel gelernt und erfahren.
17 So I set my mind to know wisdom and madness and folly; I learned that this, too, is a pursuit of the wind.
Und gab auch mein Herz drauf, daß ich lernete Weisheit und Torheit und Klugheit. Ich ward aber gewahr, daß solches auch Mühe ist.
18 For with much wisdom comes much sorrow, and as knowledge grows, grief increases.
Denn wo viel Weisheit ist, da ist viel Grämens; und wer viel lehren, muß, der muß viel leiden.
