Deuteronomy 9

1 Hear, O Israel: Today you are about to cross the Jordan to go in and dispossess nations greater and stronger than you, with large cities fortified to the heavens.

Ecoute Israël: Tu passeras aujourd’hui le Jourdain, afin que tu possèdes des nations très grandes et plus fortes que toi, des villes immenses et fortifiées jusqu’au ciel,

2 The people are strong and tall, the descendants of the Anakim. You know about them, and you have heard it said, “Who can stand up to the sons of Anak?”

Un peuple grand et d’une très haute stature, les enfants d’Enac, que toi-même tu as vus et entendus, auxquels nul ne peut résister en face.

3 But understand that today the LORD your God goes across ahead of you as a consuming fire; He will destroy them and subdue them before you. And you will drive them out and annihilate them swiftly, as the LORD has promised you.

Tu sauras donc aujourd’hui que le Seigneur ton Dieu lui-même passera devant toi, feu dévorant et consumant, qui les brisera, les détruira, et les exterminera soudain devant ta face, comme il t’a dit.

4 When the LORD your God has driven them out before you, do not say in your heart, “Because of my righteousness the LORD has brought me in to possess this land.” Rather, the LORD is driving out these nations before you because of their wickedness.

Ne dis point en ton cœur, lorsque le Seigneur ton Dieu les aura détruits en ta présence: C’est à cause de ma justice, que le Seigneur m’a introduit dans cette terre pour la posséder, puisque c’est à cause de leurs impiétés que ces nations ont été détruites.

5 It is not because of your righteousness or uprightness of heart that you are going in to possess their land, but it is because of their wickedness that the LORD your God is driving out these nations before you, to keep the promise He swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Car ce n’est pas à cause de ta justice, et de l’équité de ton cœur, que tu entreras dans leurs terres pour les posséder; mais c’est parce que ces nations ont agi d’une manière impie, que, toi entrant, elles seront détruites, et afin que le Seigneur accomplît sa parole, qu’il donna avec serment à tes pères Abraham, Isaac et Jacob.

6 Understand, then, that it is not because of your righteousness that the LORD your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stiff-necked people.

Sache donc que ce n’est pas a cause de ta justice, que le Seigneur ton Dieu t’a donné cette terre excellente en possession, puisque tu es un peuple d’un cou très roide.

7 Remember this, and never forget how you provoked the LORD your God in the wilderness. From the day you left the land of Egypt until you reached this place, you have been rebelling against the LORD.

Souviens-toi, et n’oublie pas comment tu as provoqué au courroux le Seigneur ton Dieu dans le désert. Depuis le jour que tu es sorti de l’Egypte jusqu’à ce lieu-ci, tu as toujours lutté contre le Seigneur.

8 At Horeb you provoked the LORD, and He was angry enough to destroy you.

Car à Horeb même, tu l’as provoqué; aussi, irrité, il a voulu te détruire,

9 When I went up on the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant that the LORD made with you, I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights. I ate no bread and drank no water.

Quand je montai sur la montagne, pour recevoir les tables de pierre, les tables de l’alliance que fit le Seigneur avec vous; et je demeurai constamment sur cette montagne pendant quarante jours et quarante nuits, ne mangeant point de pain et ne buvant point d’eau!

10 Then the LORD gave me the two stone tablets, inscribed by the finger of God with the exact words that the LORD spoke to you out of the fire on the mountain on the day of the assembly.

Le Seigneur me donna alors les deux tables de pierre, écrites du doigt de Dieu, et contenant toutes les paroles qu’il vous dit sur la montagne, du milieu du feu, quand l’assemblée du peuple fut réunie.

11 And at the end of forty days and forty nights, the LORD gave me the two stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant.

Et lorsque furent passés les quarante jours et autant de nuits, le Seigneur me donna les deux tables de pierre, les tables de l’alliance,

12 And the LORD said to me, “Get up and go down from here at once, for your people, whom you brought out of Egypt, have corrupted themselves. How quickly they have turned aside from the way that I commanded them! They have made for themselves a molten image.”

Et il me dit: Lève-toi, et descends vite d’ici, parce que ton peuple que tu as retiré de l’Egypte a abandonné aussitôt la voie que tu lui as montrée, et ils se sont fait une idole de fonte.

13 The LORD also said to me, “I have seen this people, and they are indeed a stiff-necked people.

Et de nouveau le Seigneur me dit: Je vois que ce peuple est d’un cou roide;

14 Leave Me alone, so that I may destroy them and blot out their name from under heaven. Then I will make you into a nation mightier and greater than they are.”

Laisse-moi, que je le brise, et que j’efface son nom de dessous le ciel, et que je t’établisse sur une nation plus grande et plus forte que celle-ci.

15 So I went back down the mountain while it was blazing with fire, with the two tablets of the covenant in my hands.

Or, lorsque je descendis de la montagne ardente, tenant les deux tables de l’alliance dans l’une et l’autre main,

16 And I saw how you had sinned against the LORD your God; you had made for yourselves a molten calf. You had turned aside quickly from the way that the LORD had commanded you.

Et lorsque j’eus vu que vous aviez péché contre le Seigneur votre Dieu, que vous aviez fait pour vous un veau de fonte, et que vous aviez abandonné sitôt sa voie qu’il vous avait montrée,

17 So I took the two tablets and threw them out of my hands, shattering them before your eyes.

Je jetai les tables de mes mains, et je les brisai en votre présence.

18 Then I fell down before the LORD for forty days and forty nights, as I had done the first time. I did not eat bread or drink water because of all the sin you had committed in doing what was evil in the sight of the LORD and provoking Him to anger.

Puis, je me prosternai devant le Seigneur, comme auparavant, ne mangeant point de pain pendant quarante jours et quarante nuits, et ne buvant pas d’eau, à cause de tous vos péchés que vous aviez commis contre le Seigneur, et parce que vous l’aviez provoqué au courroux;

19 For I was afraid of the anger and wrath that the LORD had directed against you, enough to destroy you. But the LORD listened to me this time as well.

Car j’ai craint son indignation et sa colère, par laquelle, excité contre vous, il a voulu vous détruire. Mais le Seigneur m’exauça encore cette fois.

20 The LORD was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him, but at that time I also prayed for Aaron.

Contre Aaron aussi extrêmement irrité, il voulut le briser, mais je l’en détournai également par mes prières.

21 And I took that sinful thing, the calf you had made, and burned it in the fire. Then I crushed it and ground it to powder as fine as dust, and I cast it into the stream that came down from the mountain.

Quant au péché que vous aviez fait, c’est-à-dire le veau, le prenant, je le brûlai au feu, puis le brisant en morceaux, et le réduisant entièrement en poudre, je le jetai dans le torrent qui descend de la montagne.

22 You continued to provoke the LORD at Taberah, at Massah, and at Kibroth-hattaavah.

À l’embrasement aussi, à la tentation et aux Sépulcres de la concupiscence, vous avez provoqué le Seigneur;

23 And when the LORD sent you out from Kadesh-barnea, He said, “Go up and possess the land that I have given you.” But you rebelled against the command of the LORD your God. You neither believed Him nor obeyed Him.

Et quand il vous envoya de Cadesbarné, disant: Montez et possédez la terre que je vous ai donnée, vous méprisâtes le commandement du Seigneur votre Dieu, vous ne crûtes pas en lui, et vous ne voulûtes pas écouter sa voix;

24 You have been rebelling against the LORD since the day I came to know you.

Mais vous avez été toujours rebelles, depuis le jour que j’ai commencé à vous connaître.

25 So I fell down before the LORD for forty days and forty nights, because the LORD had said He would destroy you.

Je me tins donc prosterné devant le Seigneur quarante jours et quarante nuits, durant lesquels je le conjurais avec supplication de ne point vous détruire, comme il en avait menacé;

26 And I prayed to the LORD and said, “O Lord GOD, do not destroy Your people, Your inheritance, whom You redeemed through Your greatness and brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand.

Et, priant, je dis: Seigneur Dieu, ne détruisez point votre peuple, et votre héritage, que vous avez racheté par votre grandeur, ceux que vous avez retirés de l’Égypte par une main puissante.

27 Remember Your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Overlook the stubbornness of this people and the wickedness of their sin.

Souvenez-vous de vos serviteurs Abraham, Isaac et Jacob; ne considérez point la dureté de ce peuple, ni son impiété, ni son péché;

28 Otherwise, those in the land from which You brought us out will say, ‘Because the LORD was not able to bring them into the land He had promised them, and because He hated them, He has brought them out to kill them in the wilderness.’

De peur que les habitants de la terre, de laquelle vous nous avez retirés, ne disent: Le Seigneur ne pouvait les introduire dans la terre qu’il leur avait promise, et il les haïssait; c’est pour cela qu’il les a retirés de l’Egypte, afin de les faire mourir dans le désert.

29 But they are Your people, Your inheritance, whom You brought out by Your great power and outstretched arm.”

Ils sont votre peuple et votre héritage; ce sont eux que vous avez retirés de l’Egypte par votre grande puissance et par votre bras étendu.
