Deuteronomy 20
1 When you go out to war against your enemies and see horses, chariots, and an army larger than yours, do not be afraid of them; for the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, is with you.
Quando você sair para lutar contra seus inimigos, e ver cavalos, carros e um povo mais numeroso do que você, não terá medo deles; pois Yahweh seu Deus, que o tirou da terra do Egito, está com você.
2 When you are about to go into battle, the priest is to come forward and address the army,
Será, quando você se aproximar da batalha, que o sacerdote se aproximará e falará ao povo,
3 saying to them, “Hear, O Israel, today you are going into battle with your enemies. Do not be fainthearted or afraid; do not be alarmed or terrified because of them.
e lhe dirá: “Ouve, Israel, tu te aproximas hoje para lutar contra teus inimigos”. Não deixe seu coração desmaiar! Não tenha medo, nem trema, nem tenha medo deles;
4 For the LORD your God goes with you to fight for you against your enemies, to give you the victory.”
pois Javé seu Deus é aquele que vai com você, para lutar por você contra seus inimigos, para salvá-lo”.
5 Furthermore, the officers are to address the army, saying, “Has any man built a new house and not dedicated it? Let him return home, or he may die in battle and another man dedicate it.
Os oficiais devem falar ao povo, dizendo: “Que homem há que construiu uma casa nova e não a dedicou? Deixe-o ir e volte para sua casa, para que não morra na batalha, e outro homem a dedique.
6 Has any man planted a vineyard and not begun to enjoy its fruit? Let him return home, or he may die in battle and another man enjoy its fruit.
Que homem há que tenha plantado uma vinha e que não tenha usado seus frutos? Deixe-o ir e volte para sua casa, para que não morra na batalha, e outro homem use seus frutos.
7 Has any man become pledged to a woman and not married her? Let him return home, or he may die in battle and another man marry her.”
Que homem existe que se comprometeu a se casar com uma esposa e não a levou? Deixe-o ir e volte para sua casa, para que ele não morra na batalha, e outro homem a leve”.
8 Then the officers shall speak further to the army, saying, “Is any man afraid or fainthearted? Let him return home, so that the hearts of his brothers will not melt like his own.”
Os oficiais falarão mais ao povo, e dirão: “Que homem há que seja temeroso e fraco de coração? Deixe-o ir e volte para sua casa, para que o coração de seu irmão não derreta como o coração dele”.
9 When the officers have finished addressing the army, they are to appoint commanders to lead it.
Será, quando os oficiais tiverem terminado de falar ao povo, que eles nomearão capitães de exércitos à frente do povo.
10 When you approach a city to fight against it, you are to make an offer of peace.
Quando você se aproxima de uma cidade para lutar contra ela, então proclame a paz a ela.
11 If they accept your offer of peace and open their gates, all the people there will become forced laborers to serve you.
Será, se ela lhe der uma resposta de paz e se abrir para você, então será que todas as pessoas que forem encontradas nela se tornarão trabalhadores forçados para você, e lhe servirão.
12 But if they refuse to make peace with you and wage war against you, lay siege to that city.
Se não fizer a paz com vocês, mas fizer a guerra contra vocês, então vocês a cercarão.
13 When the LORD your God has delivered it into your hand, you must put every male to the sword.
Quando Yahweh seu Deus o entregar em suas mãos, você golpeará todo macho com o fio da espada;
14 But the women, children, livestock, and whatever else is in the city—all its spoil—you may take as plunder, and you shall use the spoil of your enemies that the LORD your God gives you.
mas as mulheres, os pequenos, o gado e tudo o que há na cidade, mesmo todo o seu saque, você tomará por saque para si mesmo. Você poderá usar o saque de seus inimigos, que Javé, seu Deus, lhe deu.
15 This is how you are to treat all the cities that are far away from you and do not belong to the nations nearby.
Assim farás com todas as cidades que estão muito longe de ti, que não são das cidades dessas nações.
16 However, in the cities of the nations that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, you must not leave alive anything that breathes.
Mas das cidades desses povos que Javé, vosso Deus, vos dá por herança, nada salvarás vivo que respire;
17 For you must devote them to complete destruction —the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites—as the LORD your God has commanded you,
mas os destruirás totalmente: o hitita, o amorreu, o cananeu, o perizeu, o hebreu e o jebuseu, como Javé, vosso Deus, vos ordenou;
18 so that they cannot teach you to do all the detestable things they do for their gods, and so cause you to sin against the LORD your God.
que não vos ensinem a seguir todas as suas abominações, o que fizeram por seus deuses; assim pecareis contra Javé, vosso Deus.
19 When you lay siege to a city for an extended time while fighting against it to capture it, you must not destroy its trees by putting an axe to them, because you can eat their fruit. You must not cut them down. Are the trees of the field human, that you should besiege them?
Quando cercardes uma cidade por muito tempo, ao fazerdes guerra contra ela para tomá-la, não destruireis suas árvores empunhando um machado contra elas; pois delas podereis comer. Não as cortareis, pois é a árvore do homem do campo, que deve ser sitiada por vós?
20 But you may destroy the trees that you know do not produce fruit. Use them to build siege works against the city that is waging war against you, until it falls.
Somente as árvores que você sabe que não são árvores para alimento, você as destruirá e as cortará. Vocês construirão baluartes contra a cidade que faz guerra com vocês, até que ela caia.
