Deuteronomy 2
1 Then we turned back and headed for the wilderness by way of the Red Sea, as the LORD had instructed me, and for many days we wandered around Mount Seir.
Puis nous nous tournâmes, et nous partîmes pour le désert, par le chemin de la mer Rouge, comme l'Éternel me l'avait dit, et nous encerclâmes la montagne de Séir pendant plusieurs jours.
2 At this time the LORD said to me,
L'Éternel m'a parlé, en disant:
3 “You have been wandering around this hill country long enough; turn to the north
« Tu as assez longtemps encerclé cette montagne. Tourne-toi vers le nord.
4 and command the people: ‘You will pass through the territory of your brothers, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. They will be afraid of you, so you must be very careful.
Tu donneras cet ordre au peuple: « Vous allez traverser la frontière de vos frères, les enfants d'Ésaü, qui habitent en Séir, et ils auront peur de vous. Soyez donc prudents.
5 Do not provoke them, for I will not give you any of their land, not even a footprint, because I have given Mount Seir to Esau as his possession.
Ne vous disputez pas avec eux, car je ne vous donnerai aucune de leurs terres, pas même pour que la plante du pied les foule, car j'ai donné la montagne de Séir en propriété à Ésaü.
6 You are to pay them in silver for the food you eat and the water you drink.’”
Tu achèteras d'eux, à prix d'argent, des aliments que tu pourras manger. Tu leur achèteras aussi de l'eau à prix d'argent, pour que tu puisses boire.'"
7 Indeed, the LORD your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has watched over your journey through this vast wilderness. The LORD your God has been with you these forty years, and you have lacked nothing.
Car Yahvé ton Dieu t'a béni dans tout le travail de tes mains. Il a connu ta marche dans ce grand désert. Ces quarante années, Yahvé ton Dieu a été avec toi. Tu n'as manqué de rien.
8 So we passed by our brothers, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. We turned away from the Arabah road, which comes up from Elath and Ezion-geber, and traveled along the road of the Wilderness of Moab.
Et nous passâmes à côté de nos frères, les fils d'Ésaü, qui habitent en Séir, par le chemin de la plaine d'Elath et d'Ezion Geber. Nous nous tournâmes et passâmes par le chemin du désert de Moab.
9 Then the LORD said to me, “Do not harass the Moabites or provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of their land, because I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as their possession.”
Yahvé m'a dit: « N'importune pas Moab et ne te bats pas avec lui, car je ne te donnerai aucune de ses terres en propriété, comme j'ai donné Ar en propriété aux enfants de Lot. »
10 (The Emites used to live there, a people great and many, as tall as the Anakites.
(Les Emim y habitaient auparavant, peuple grand et nombreux, et de taille égale à celle des Anakim.
11 Like the Anakites, they were also regarded as Rephaim, though the Moabites called them Emites.
Ceux-ci aussi sont considérés comme des Rephaïm, comme les Anakim; mais les Moabites les appellent Emim.
12 The Horites used to live in Seir, but the descendants of Esau drove them out. They destroyed the Horites from before them and settled in their place, just as Israel did in the land that the LORD gave them as their possession.)
Les Horites habitaient aussi autrefois en Séir, mais les fils d'Ésaü leur succédèrent. Ils les détruisirent devant eux et habitèrent à leur place, comme Israël l'a fait pour le pays qu'il possédait et que Yahvé leur avait donné).
13 “Now arise and cross over the Brook of Zered.” So we crossed over the Brook of Zered.
« Maintenant, lève-toi et traverse le torrent de Zered. » Nous avons traversé le ruisseau Zered.
14 The time we spent traveling from Kadesh-barnea until we crossed over the Brook of Zered was thirty-eight years, until that entire generation of fighting men had perished from the camp, as the LORD had sworn to them.
Les jours que nous fîmes depuis Kadès-Barnéa jusqu'au passage du torrent de Zéred furent de trente-huit ans, jusqu'à ce que toute la génération des hommes de guerre eût disparu du milieu du camp, comme l'avait juré l'Éternel.
15 Indeed, the LORD’s hand was against them, to eliminate them from the camp, until they had all perished.
Et la main de l'Éternel fut contre eux, pour les détruire depuis le milieu du camp, jusqu'à ce qu'ils eussent disparu.
16 Now when all the fighting men among the people had died,
Lorsque tous les hommes de guerre furent consumés et morts parmi le peuple,
17 the LORD said to me,
l'Éternel me parla, et dit:
18 “Today you are going to cross the border of Moab at Ar.
« Tu passeras aujourd'hui par Ar, la frontière de Moab.
19 But when you get close to the Ammonites, do not harass them or provoke them, for I will not give you any of the land of the Ammonites. I have given it to the descendants of Lot as their possession.”
Quand tu approcheras de la frontière des enfants d'Ammon, ne les importune pas et ne leur cherche pas querelle, car je ne te donnerai aucune possession du pays des enfants d'Ammon, puisque je l'ai donné en possession aux enfants de Lot. »
20 (That too was regarded as the land of the Rephaim, who used to live there, though the Ammonites called them Zamzummites.
(Cela aussi est considéré comme un pays de Rephaïm. Les Rephaïm y habitaient autrefois, mais les Ammonites les appellent Zamzummim,
21 They were a people great and many, as tall as the Anakites. But the LORD destroyed them from before the Ammonites, who drove them out and settled in their place,
un peuple grand, nombreux et de haute taille, comme les Anakim; mais Yahvé les détruisit de devant Israël, et ils leur succédèrent et habitèrent à leur place,
22 just as He had done for the descendants of Esau who lived in Seir, when He destroyed the Horites from before them. They drove them out and have lived in their place to this day.
comme il fit pour les fils d'Ésaü qui habitent en Séir, lorsqu'il détruisit de devant eux les Horites; et ils leur succédèrent et habitèrent à leur place jusqu'à ce jour.
23 And the Avvim, who lived in villages as far as Gaza, were destroyed by the Caphtorites, who came out of Caphtor and settled in their place.)
Puis les Avvim, qui habitaient des villages jusqu'à Gaza: les Caphtorim, sortis de Caphtor, les détruisirent et habitèrent à leur place).
24 “Arise, set out, and cross the Arnon Valley. See, I have delivered into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land. Begin to take possession of it and engage him in battle.
« Lève-toi, pars, et franchis le torrent de l'Arnon. Voici, j'ai livré entre tes mains Sihon, l'Amoréen, roi de Hesbon, et son pays; commence à le posséder, et livre bataille contre lui.
25 This very day I will begin to put the dread and fear of you upon all the nations under heaven. They will hear the reports of you and tremble in anguish because of you.”
Aujourd'hui, je commencerai à mettre l'épouvante et la crainte de toi sur les peuples qui sont sous tout le ciel, qui entendront parler de toi, et qui trembleront et seront dans l'angoisse à cause de toi. »
26 So from the Wilderness of Kedemoth I sent messengers with an offer of peace to Sihon king of Heshbon, saying,
Du désert de Kedemoth, j'envoyai des messagers à Sihon, roi de Hesbon, avec des paroles de paix, en disant:
27 “Let us pass through your land; we will stay on the main road. We will not turn to the right or to the left.
« Laisse-moi passer par ton pays. Je passerai par la route. Je ne me tournerai ni à droite ni à gauche.
28 You can sell us food to eat and water to drink in exchange for silver. Only let us pass through on foot,
Tu me vendras à prix d'argent de la nourriture, pour que je mange, et tu me donneras à prix d'argent de l'eau, pour que je boive. Laissez-moi seulement passer sur mes pieds,
29 just as the descendants of Esau who live in Seir and the Moabites who live in Ar did for us, until we cross the Jordan into the land that the LORD our God is giving us.”
comme m'ont traité les enfants d'Ésaü qui habitent en Séir et les Moabites qui habitent à Ar, jusqu'à ce que je passe le Jourdain pour entrer dans le pays que Yahvé notre Dieu nous donne. »
30 But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass through, for the LORD your God had made his spirit stubborn and his heart obstinate, that He might deliver him into your hand, as is the case this day.
Mais Sihon, roi de Heshbon, ne voulut pas nous laisser passer devant lui, car Yahvé ton Dieu avait endurci son esprit et rendu son cœur obstiné, afin de le livrer entre tes mains, comme c'est le cas aujourd'hui.
31 Then the LORD said to me, “See, I have begun to deliver Sihon and his land over to you. Now begin to conquer and possess his land.”
Yahvé me dit: « Voici, j'ai commencé à livrer Sihon et son pays devant toi. Commence à le posséder, pour que tu hérites de son pays. »
32 So Sihon and his whole army came out for battle against us at Jahaz.
Alors Sihon sortit contre nous, lui et tout son peuple, pour combattre à Jahaz.
33 And the LORD our God delivered him over to us, and we defeated him and his sons and his whole army.
Yahvé notre Dieu le livra devant nous, et nous le frappâmes, lui, ses fils et tout son peuple.
34 At that time we captured all his cities and devoted to destruction the people of every city, including women and children. We left no survivors.
Nous prîmes alors toutes ses villes, et nous dévouâmes par interdit toutes les villes habitées, avec les femmes et les petits enfants. Nous n'avons laissé personne en vie.
35 We carried off for ourselves only the livestock and the plunder from the cities we captured.
Nous ne prîmes pour nous que le bétail, avec le butin des villes que nous avions prises.
36 From Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Valley, along with the city in the valley, even as far as Gilead, not one city had walls too high for us. The LORD our God gave us all of them.
Depuis Arœr, qui est au bord du torrent de l'Arnon, et la ville qui est dans la vallée, jusqu'à Galaad, il n'y avait pas de ville trop élevée pour nous. Yahvé notre Dieu a tout livré devant nous.
37 But you did not go near the land of the Ammonites, or the land along the banks of the Jabbok River, or the cities of the hill country, or any place that the LORD our God had forbidden.
Seulement, au pays des enfants d'Ammon, vous ne vous êtes pas approchés: toutes les rives du fleuve Jabbok, les villes de la montagne, et partout où Yahvé notre Dieu nous l'a interdit.
