Acts 7
1 Then the high priest asked Stephen, “Are these charges true?”
Le souverain sacrificateur lui demanda si ce dont on l'accusait était véritable.
2 And Stephen declared: “Brothers and fathers, listen to me! The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham while he was still in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran,
Etienne répondit: «Mes frères et mes pères, écoutez: Le Dieu de gloire apparut à notre père Abraham, lorsqu'il était en Mésopotamie, avant qu'il s'établit à Charran, et lui dit:
3 and told him, ‘Leave your country and your kindred and go to the land I will show you.’
«Quitte ton pays et ta famille, et rends-toi dans le pays que je t'indiquerai.»
4 So Abraham left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Haran. After his father died, God brought him out of that place and into this land where you are now living.
Alors Abraham sortit du pays des Chaldéens, et s'établit à Charran. De là, après la mort de son père, Dieu le fit émigrer dans le pays que vous habitez maintenant;
5 He gave him no inheritance here, not even a foot of ground. But God promised to give possession of the land to Abraham and his descendants, even though he did not yet have a child.
il ne lui donna point de propriété dans ce pays, pas même un pouce de terre, mais il lui promit, à une époque où le patriarche n'avait point d'enfants, de le lui donner en possession, à lui, et à sa postérité après lui.
6 God told him that his descendants would be foreigners in a strange land, and that they would be enslaved and mistreated four hundred years.
Dieu parla ainsi: «Sa postérité habitera en terre étrangère; on la réduira en servitude et on la maltraitera pendant quatre cents ans.
7 ‘But I will punish the nation that enslaves them,’ God said, ‘and afterward they will come forth and worship Me in this place.’
Mais moi, dit Dieu, je jugerai la nation à laquelle ses descendant auront été assujettis; après cela, ils quitteront ce pays, et me rendront leur culte dans ce lieu-ci; »
8 Then God gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision, and Abraham became the father of Isaac and circumcised him on the eighth day. And Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs.
puis il donna à Abraham l'alliance de la circoncision. C'est dans ces circonstances qu'Abraham eut Isaac, qu'il circoncit le huitième jour; Isaac eut Jacob; Jacob, les douze patriarches.
9 Because the patriarchs were jealous of Joseph, they sold him as a slave into Egypt. But God was with him
Les patriarches, jaloux de Joseph, le vendirent pour l'Egypte; mais Dieu était avec lui:
10 and rescued him from all his troubles. He granted Joseph favor and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt, who appointed him ruler over Egypt and all his household.
il le tira de toutes ses peines, et lui donna de plaire par sa sagesse à Pharaon, roi d'Egypte, de sorte que ce prince le mit à la tête du royaume et de toute sa maison.
11 Then famine and great suffering swept across Egypt and Canaan, and our fathers could not find food.
Or il survint une famine dans tout le pays d'Egypte et dans celui de Canaan; la détresse était grande, et nos pères ne trouvaient pas de nourriture.
12 When Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent our fathers on their first visit.
Jacob ayant appris qu'il y avait des vivres en Egypte, y envoya nos pères une première fois;
13 On their second visit, Joseph revealed his identity to his brothers, and his family became known to Pharaoh.
puis, au second voyage, Joseph fut reconnu par ses frères, et Pharaon sut quelle était l'origine de Joseph.
14 Then Joseph sent for his father Jacob and all his relatives, seventy-five in all.
Joseph envoya chercher Jacob son père et toute sa famille, qui se montait à soixante et quinze personnes.
15 So Jacob went down to Egypt, where he and our fathers died.
Jacob descendit en Egypte, où il mourut, ainsi que nos pères;
16 Their bones were carried back to Shechem and placed in the tomb that Abraham had bought from the sons of Hamor at Shechem for a price he paid in silver.
et leurs corps furent transportés à Sichem, et déposés dans le sépulcre qu'Abraham avait acheté à prix d'argent des fils d'Hémor, père de Sichem.
17 As the time drew near for God to fulfill His promise to Abraham, our people in Egypt increased greatly in number.
«A mesure que s'approchait le temps où devait s'accomplir la promesse que Dieu avait faite à Abraham, le peuple s'accroissait et se multipliait en Egypte,
18 Then another king, who knew nothing of Joseph, arose over Egypt.
jusqu’à l'époque où s'éleva un autre roi, qui ne savait rien de Joseph.
19 He exploited our people and oppressed our fathers, forcing them to abandon their infants so they would die.
Ce prince, usant d'artifice contre notre race, maltraita nos pères et les contraignit d'exposer leurs nouveau-nés, afin qu'ils ne vécussent pas.
20 At that time Moses was born, and he was beautiful in the sight of God. For three months he was nurtured in his father’s house.
C'est en ce temps que naquit Moïse, qui était d'une divine beauté. Il fut nourri trois mois dans la maison de son père,
21 When he was set outside, Pharaoh’s daughter took him and brought him up as her own son.
mais, ayant été exposé, la fille de Pharaon le recueillit, et l'éleva pour en faire son fils.
22 So Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was powerful in speech and action.
Moïse fut instruit de toute la science des Égyptiens; il était puissant en paroles et en oeuvres.
23 When Moses was forty years old, he decided to visit his brothers, the children of Israel.
Quand il eut atteint l'âge de quarante ans, il eut l'idée de visiter ses frères, les fils d'Israël,
24 And when he saw one of them being mistreated, Moses went to his defense and avenged him by striking down the Egyptian who was oppressing him.
et, en ayant vu un qu'on maltraitait, il prit sa défense, et vengea l'opprimé en frappant l'Égyptien:
25 He assumed his brothers would understand that God was using him to deliver them, but they did not.
il pensait que ses frères comprendraient que Dieu se servait de lui pour les délivrer, mais ils ne le comprirent point.
26 The next day he came upon two Israelites who were fighting, and he tried to reconcile them, saying, ‘Men, you are brothers. Why are you mistreating each other?’
Le lendemain, il s'approcha de deux d'entre eux qui se battaient, et les engagea à faire la paix, en disant: «Hommes, vous êtes frères, pourquoi vous maltraitez-vous?»
27 But the man who was abusing his neighbor pushed Moses aside and said, ‘Who made you ruler and judge over us?
Mais celui qui maltraitait son compatriote le repoussa, en disant: «Qui t’a établi chef et juge sur nous?
28 Do you want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’
Veux-tu me tuer, comme tu as tué hier l’Egyptien?»
29 At this remark, Moses fled to the land of Midian, where he lived as a foreigner and had two sons.
Cette parole fut cause que Moïse s'enfuit, et alla habiter dans le pays de Madian, où il eut deux fils.
30 After forty years had passed, an angel appeared to Moses in the flames of a burning bush in the desert near Mount Sinai.
«Quarante ans s'étaient écoulés, lorsqu'un ange lui apparut au désert du mont Sinaï, dans la flamme d'un buisson ardent.
31 When Moses saw it, he marveled at the sight. As he approached to look more closely, the voice of the Lord came to him:
Comme Moïse s'étonnait de ce phénomène, et s'approchait pour le considérer, la voix du Seigneur se fit entendre:
32 ‘I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.’ Moses trembled with fear and did not dare to look.
«Je suis le Dieu de tes pères, le Dieu d'Abraham, d’Isaac et de Jacob.» Et Moïse tremblant n'osait regarder.
33 Then the Lord said to him, ‘Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.
Le Seigneur lui dit: «Ote tes souliers de tes pieds, car le lieu que tu foules est une terre sainte.
34 I have indeed seen the oppression of My people in Egypt. I have heard their groaning and have come down to deliver them. Now come, I will send you back to Egypt.’
J'ai vu de mes yeux l’oppression de mon peuple en Egypte: j’ai entendu ses gémissements, et je suis descendu pour le délivrer. Viens donc, que je t'envoie en Egypte.»
35 This Moses, whom they had rejected with the words, ‘Who made you ruler and judge?’ is the one whom God sent to be their ruler and redeemer through the angel who appeared to him in the bush.
Ce Moïse qu'ils avaient renié en disant: «Qui t’a établi chef et juge?» c'est lui que Dieu a envoyé pour chef et libérateur, avec l'assistance de l'ange qui lui était apparu dans le buisson;
36 He led them out and performed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, at the Red Sea, and for forty years in the wilderness.
c'est lui qui les a délivrés, en faisant des prodiges et des miracles sur la terre d'Egypte, sur la mer Rouge et au désert, pendant quarante ans.
37 This is the same Moses who told the Israelites, ‘God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers.’
C'est ce Moïse qui a dit aux fils d'Israël: «Dieu vous suscitera d'entre vos frères un prophète comme moi; »
38 He was in the assembly in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our fathers. And he received living words to pass on to us.
c'est lui, qui, lors de l'assemblée au désert, servit d'intermédiaire entre l'ange, qui lui parlait sur le mont Sinaï, et nos pères, en recevant les vivants oracles, pour nous les transmettre.
39 But our fathers refused to obey him. Instead, they rejected him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt.
Nos pères, loin de vouloir lui obéir, le repoussèrent et tournèrent leur coeur vers l'Egypte,
40 They said to Aaron, ‘Make us gods who will go before us! As for this Moses who led us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has happened to him.’
en disant à Aaron: «Fais-nous des dieux qui marchent devant nous; car pour ce Moïse qui nous a fait sortir du pays d'Egypte, nous ne savons ce qui lui est arrivé.»
41 At that time they made a calf and offered a sacrifice to the idol, rejoicing in the works of their hands.
Ils fabriquèrent alors un veau, puis ils offrirent un sacrifice à l'idole, et se réjouirent de l'oeuvre de leurs mains.
42 But God turned away from them and gave them over to the worship of the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: ‘Did you bring Me sacrifices and offerings forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?
Dieu, de son côté, se détourna d'eux, et les livra au culte de l'armée du ciel, ainsi qu'il est écrit au livre des Prophètes: «M'avez-vous offert des victimes et des sacrifices pendant quarante ans au désert, ô maison d'Israël?
43 You have taken along the tabernacle of Molech and the star of your god Rephan, the idols you made to worship. Therefore I will send you into exile beyond Babylon.’
— Vous avez porté le tabernacle de Moloch et l'astre du Dieu Rephan, ces idoles que vous avez fabriquées pour les adorer: aussi vous transporterai-je au delà de Babylone.»
44 Our fathers had the tabernacle of the Testimony with them in the wilderness. It was constructed exactly as God had directed Moses, according to the pattern he had seen.
Le tabernacle du témoignage était pour nos ancêtres au désert, comme l'avait enjoint celui qui dit à Moïse de le construire sur le modèle qu'il avait vu.
45 And our fathers who received it brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations God drove out before them. It remained until the time of David,
C'est ce tabernacle que nos pères reçurent à leur tour, et qu'ils apportèrent sous la conduite de Josué, lorsqu'ils firent la conquête du pays sur les nations que Dieu chassa de devant eux, et il subsista jusqu'au temps de David.
46 who found favor in the sight of God and asked to provide a dwelling place for the God of Jacob.
Ce prince, qui avait trouvé grâce devant Dieu, demanda d'élever un tabernacle au Dieu de Jacob;
47 But it was Solomon who built the house for Him.
néanmoins ce fut Salomon qui lui bâtit un temple.
48 However, the Most High does not dwell in houses made by human hands. As the prophet says:
Mais le Très-Haut n'habite point dans des constructions de main d'homme, comme le prophète le dit:
49 ‘Heaven is My throne and the earth is My footstool. What kind of house will you build for Me, says the Lord, or where will My place of repose be?
«Le ciel est mon trône, la terre, mon marchepied. Quelle maison me bâtirez-vous, dit le Seigneur, et quel sera le lieu de mon repos?
50 Has not My hand made all these things?’
N’est-ce pas ma main qui a fait toutes ces choses?»
51 You stiff-necked people with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit, just as your fathers did.
«Hommes de col roide et incirconcis de coeur et d'oreilles, vous vous opposez toujours au Saint-Esprit, oui vous, comme vos pères.
52 Which of the prophets did your fathers fail to persecute? They even killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One. And now you are His betrayers and murderers—
Lequel des prophètes vos pères n'ont-ils pas persécuté? Ils ont même tué ceux qui ont annoncé la venue du Juste, et vous, aujourd'hui, vous l'avez trahi et vous avez été ses meurtriers.
53 you who received the law ordained by angels, yet have not kept it.”
Vous qui avez reçu la Loi sur les ordres des anges, et qui ne l'avez point gardée...»
54 On hearing this, the members of the Sanhedrin were enraged, and they gnashed their teeth at him.
Ces paroles transportèrent leur coeur de rage; ils grincèrent des dents contre lui.
55 But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked intently into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.
Mais Etienne, animé de l'Esprit saint, tourna les yeux au ciel; il vit la gloire de Dieu, et Jésus debout à sa droite,
56 “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”
et il dit: «Voici, je vois les cieux ouverts, et le Fils de l'homme debout à la droite de Dieu.»
57 At this they covered their ears, cried out in a loud voice, and rushed together at him.
Alors les Juifs, poussant de grands cris, se bouchèrent les oreilles; et ils se jetèrent tous ensemble sur lui,
58 They dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile the witnesses laid their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.
l'entraînèrent hors de la ville, et le lapidèrent. Les témoins avaient posé leurs manteaux aux pieds d'un jeune homme nommé Saul.
59 While they were stoning him, Stephen appealed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”
Pendant qu'ils lapidaient Etienne, celui-ci priait, et disait: «Seigneur Jésus, reçois mon esprit.»
60 Falling on his knees, he cried out in a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep.
Et s'étant mis à genoux, il s'écria à haute voix: «Seigneur, ne leur impute point ce péché; » et, en disant ces mots, il s'endormit.
