Acts 23
1 Paul looked directly at the Sanhedrin and said, “Brothers, I have conducted myself before God in all good conscience to this day.”
E Paulo, olhando fixamente para o supremo conselho, disse: Homens irmãos, com toda boa consciência eu tenho andado diante de Deus até o dia de hoje.
2 At this, the high priest Ananias ordered those standing near Paul to strike him on the mouth.
Mas o sumo sacerdote Ananias mandou aos que estavam perto dele, que o espancassem na boca.
3 Then Paul said to him, “God will strike you, you whitewashed wall! You sit here to judge me according to the law, yet you yourself violate the law by commanding that I be struck.”
Então Paulo lhe disse: Deus vai te espancar, parede caiada! Estás tu [aqui] sentado para me julgar conforme a Lei, e contra a Lei mandas me espancarem?
4 But those standing nearby said, “How dare you insult the high priest of God!”
E os que estavam ali disseram: Tu insultas ao sumo sacerdote de Deus?
5 “Brothers,” Paul replied, “I was not aware that he was the high priest, for it is written: ‘Do not speak evil about the ruler of your people.’”
E Paulo disse: Eu não sabia, irmãos, que ele era o sumo sacerdote; porque está escrito: Não falarás mal do chefe do teu povo.
6 Then Paul, knowing that some of them were Sadducees and others Pharisees, called out in the Sanhedrin, “Brothers, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee. It is because of my hope in the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial.”
E Paulo, sabendo que uma parte era de saduceus, e outra de fariseus, ele clamou no supremo conselho: Homens irmãos, eu sou fariseu, filho de fariseu; pela esperança e ressurreição dos mortos eu estou sendo julgado.
7 As soon as he had said this, a dispute broke out between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the assembly was divided.
E ele, tendo dito isto, houve uma confusão entre os fariseus e saduceus; e a multidão se dividiu;
8 For the Sadducees say that there is neither a resurrection, nor angels, nor spirits, but the Pharisees acknowledge them all.
Porque os saduceus dizem que não há ressurreição, nem anjo ou espírito; mas os fariseus declaram ambas.
9 A great clamor arose, and some scribes from the party of the Pharisees got up and contended sharply, “We find nothing wrong with this man. What if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?”
E houve uma grande gritaria; e levantando-se os escribas da parte dos fariseus, disputavam, dizendo: Nenhum mal achamos neste homem; e se algum espírito ou anjo falou com ele?
10 The dispute grew so violent that the commander was afraid they would tear Paul to pieces. He ordered the soldiers to go down and remove him by force and bring him into the barracks.
E havendo grande confusão, o comandante, temendo que Paulo não fosse despedaçado por eles, mandou descer a tropa, e tirá-lo do meio deles, e levá-lo à área fortificada.
11 The following night the Lord stood near Paul and said, “Take courage! As you have testified about Me in Jerusalem, so also you must testify in Rome.”
E [n] a noite seguinte o Senhor, aparecendo-lhe, disse: Tem bom ânimo, Paulo! Porque assim como deste testemunho de mim em Jerusalém, assim é necessário que tu dês testemunho também em Roma.
12 When daylight came, the Jews formed a conspiracy and bound themselves with an oath not to eat or drink until they had killed Paul.
E tendo vindo o dia, alguns dos judeus fizeram uma conspiração, e prestaram juramento sob pena de maldição, dizendo que não comeriam nem beberiam enquanto não matassem a Paulo.
13 More than forty of them were involved in this plot.
E eram mais de quarenta os que fizeram este juramento.
14 They went to the chief priests and elders and said, “We have bound ourselves with a solemn oath not to eat anything until we have killed Paul.
Os quais foram até os chefes dos sacerdotes e os anciãos, [e] disseram: Fizemos juramento sob pena de maldição, de que nada experimentaremos enquanto não matarmos a Paulo.
15 Now then, you and the Sanhedrin petition the commander to bring him down to you on the pretext of examining his case more carefully. We are ready to kill him on the way.”
Agora, pois, vós, com o supremo conselho, informai ao comandante que amanhã ele o traga perante vós, como se fosse para que investigueis mais detalhadamente; e antes que ele chegue, estaremos prontos para o matar.
16 But when the son of Paul’s sister heard about the plot, he went into the barracks and told Paul.
E o filho da irmã de Paulo, tendo ouvido esta cilada, veio e entrou na área fortificada, e avisou a Paulo.
17 Then Paul called one of the centurions and said, “Take this young man to the commander; he has something to tell him.”
E Paulo, tendo chamado a si um dos centuriões, disse: Leva este rapaz ao comandante, porque ele tem algo para lhe avisar.
18 So the centurion took him to the commander and said, “Paul the prisoner sent and asked me to bring this young man to you. He has something to tell you.”
Então ele o tomou, levou ao comandante, e disse: O prisioneiro Paulo, tendo me chamado, rogou [-me] que eu te trouxesse este rapaz, que tem algo a te dizer.
19 The commander took the young man by the hand, drew him aside, and asked, “What do you need to tell me?”
E o comandante, tomando-o pela mão, e indo para um lugar reservado, perguntou [-lhe]: O que tens para me avisar?
20 He answered, “The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul to the Sanhedrin tomorrow on the pretext of acquiring more information about him.
E ele disse: Os judeus combinaram de te pedirem que amanhã tu leves a Paulo ao supremo conselho, como se fosse para que lhe perguntem mais detalhadamente;
21 Do not let them persuade you, because more than forty men are waiting to ambush him. They have bound themselves with an oath not to eat or drink until they have killed him; they are ready now, awaiting your consent.”
Porém tu, não acredites neles; porque mais de quarenta homens deles estão lhe preparando cilada, os quais sob pena de maldição fizeram juramento para não comerem nem beberem enquanto não o tiverem matado; e eles já estão preparados, esperando de ti a promessa.
22 So the commander dismissed the young man and instructed him, “Do not tell anyone that you have reported this to me.”
Então o comandante despediu ao rapaz, mandando [-lhe]: A ninguém digas que tu me revelaste estas coisas.
23 Then he called two of his centurions and said, “Prepare two hundred soldiers, seventy horsemen, and two hundred spearmen to go to Caesarea in the third hour of the night.
E ele, chamando a si certos dois dos centuriões, disse: Aprontai duzentos soldados para irem até Cesareia; e setenta cavaleiros, e duzentos arqueiros, a partir das terceira hora da noite.
24 Provide mounts for Paul to take him safely to Governor Felix.”
E preparem animais para cavalgarem, para que pondo neles a Paulo, levem [-no] a salvo ao governador Félix.
25 And he wrote the following letter:
E ele [lhe] escreveu uma carta, que continha este aspecto:
26 Claudius Lysias, To His Excellency, Governor Felix: Greetings.
Cláudio Lísias, a Félix, excelentíssimo governador, saudações.
27 This man was seized by the Jews, and they were about to kill him when I came with my troops to rescue him. For I had learned that he is a Roman citizen,
Este homem foi preso pelos judeus, e estando já a ponte de o matarem, eu vim com a tropa e [o] tomei, ao ser informado que ele era romano.
28 and since I wanted to understand their charges against him, I brought him down to their Sanhedrin.
E eu, querendo saber a causa por que o acusavam, levei-o ao supremo conselho deles.
29 I found that the accusation involved questions about their own law, but there was no charge worthy of death or imprisonment.
O qual eu achei que acusavam de algumas questões da Lei deles; mas que nenhum crime digno de morte ou de prisão havia contra ele.
30 When I was informed that there was a plot against the man, I sent him to you at once. I also instructed his accusers to present their case against him before you.
E tendo sido avisado de que os judeus estavam para pôr uma cilada contra este homem, logo eu [o] enviei a ti, mandando também aos acusadores que diante de ti digam o que [tiverem] contra ele. Que tu estejas bem.
31 So the soldiers followed their orders and brought Paul by night to Antipatris.
Tendo então os soldados tomado a Paulo, assim como lhes tinha sido ordenado, trouxeram-no durante a noite a Antipátride.
32 The next day they returned to the barracks and let the horsemen go on with him.
E no [dia] seguinte, deixando irem com ele os cavaleiros, voltaram à área fortificada.
33 When the horsemen arrived in Caesarea, they delivered the letter to the governor and presented Paul to him.
Os quais, tendo chegado a Cesareia, e entregado a carta ao governador, apresentaram-lhe também a Paulo.
34 The governor read the letter and asked what province Paul was from. Learning that he was from Cilicia,
E o governador, tendo lido [a carta], perguntou de que província ele era; e ao entender que [era] da Cilícia,
35 he said, “I will hear your case when your accusers arrive.” Then he ordered that Paul be kept under guard in Herod’s Praetorium.
disse: “Eu te ouvirei quando também chegarem os teus acusadores”. E mandou que o guardassem no palácio de Herodes.
