3 John 1
1 The elder, To the beloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth:
Ich, der Alte, sende meinen Gruß dem geliebten Gajus, den ich aufrichtig lieb habe.
2 Beloved, I pray that in every way you may prosper and enjoy good health, as your soul also prospers.
Geliebter, ich wünsche dir allseitiges Wohlergehen und Gesundheit, wie es ja mit deiner Seele gut steht.
3 For I was overjoyed when the brothers came and testified about your devotion to the truth, in which you continue to walk.
Denn es ist mir eine große Freude gewesen, wenn Brüder kamen und dir wegen deiner Wahrhaftigkeit ein anerkennendes Zeugnis erteilten, wie du ja (wirklich) in der Wahrheit wandelst.
4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.
Eine größere Freude gibt es für mich nicht als die, von meinen Kindern zu hören, daß sie in der Wahrheit wandeln.
5 Beloved, you are faithful in what you are doing for the brothers, and especially since they are strangers to you.
Geliebter, du handelst mit Treue in allem, was du an den Brüdern tust und noch dazu an fremden;
6 They have testified to the church about your love. You will do well to send them on their way in a manner worthy of God.
diese haben deine Liebe vor der ganzen Gemeinde rühmend anerkannt, und du wirst gut tun, wenn du ihnen so, wie es Gottes würdig ist, die Weiterreise ermöglichst;
7 For they went out on behalf of the Name, accepting nothing from the Gentiles.
denn um (der Verkündigung) seines Namens willen sind sie ausgezogen und nehmen von den Heiden keine Unterstützung an.
8 Therefore we ought to support such men, so that we may be fellow workers for the truth.
Wir sind deshalb verpflichtet, uns solcher (Männer) anzunehmen, damit wir uns als Mitarbeiter für die (Sache der) Wahrheit erweisen.
9 I have written to the church about this, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first, will not accept our instruction.
Ich habe ein Schreiben an die Gemeinde gerichtet, aber Diotrephes, der unter ihnen der Erste sein möchte, nimmt uns nicht an.
10 So if I come, I will call attention to his malicious slander against us. And unsatisfied with that, he refuses to welcome the brothers and forbids those who want to do so, even putting them out of the church.
Deshalb werde ich bei meinem Kommen auf seine Handlungsweise aufmerksam machen, wie er uns mit boshaften Äußerungen verdächtigt und, damit noch nicht zufrieden, für seine Person keinen Bruder gastlich bei sich aufnimmt und die, welche dazu bereit sind, daran hindert und sie aus der Gemeinde ausstößt.
11 Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. The one who does good is of God; the one who does evil has not seen God.
Geliebter, nimm dir nicht das Böse zum Vorbild, sondern das Gute: wer Gutes tut, ist aus Gott; wer Böses tut, hat Gott nicht gesehen.
12 Demetrius has received a good testimony from everyone, and from the truth itself. We also testify for him, and you know that our testimony is true.
Dem Demetrius ist von allen und von der Wahrheit selber ein rühmliches Zeugnis erteilt worden; auch wir erteilen es ihm, und du weißt, daß unser Zeugnis der Wahrheit entspricht.
13 I have many things to write to you, but I would prefer not to do so with pen and ink.
Ich hätte dir noch vieles zu schreiben, mag es aber nicht mit Tinte und Schreibrohr tun.
14 Instead, I hope to see you soon and speak with you face to face. Peace to you. The friends here send you greetings. Greet each of our friends there by name.
Ich hoffe aber, dich recht bald zu sehen; dann wollen wir uns mündlich aussprechen. Friede sei mit dir! Die Freunde lassen dich grüßen. Grüße die Freunde, jeden persönlich!
