2 Kings 6
1 Now the sons of the prophets said to Elisha, “Please take note that the place where we meet with you is too small for us.
Les jeunes prophètes dirent à Elisée: "Tu vois que l’habitation où nous demeurons avec toi est trop étroite pour nous.
2 Please let us go to the Jordan, where each of us can get a log so we can build ourselves a place to live there.” “Go,” said Elisha.
Laisse-nous donc aller jusqu’au Jourdain, et là chacun de nous prendra une poutre et nous nous y arrangerons un lieu d’habitation. Allez," leur dit-il.
3 Then one of them said, “Please come with your servants.” “I will come,” he replied.
"De grâce, dit alors un des jeunes prophètes, daigne accompagner tes serviteurs. J’Y consens," répliqua-t-il,
4 So Elisha went with them, and when they came to the Jordan, they began to cut down some trees.
et il les accompagna. Arrivés près du Jourdain, ils coupèrent du bois.
5 As one of them was cutting down a tree, the iron axe head fell into the water. “Oh, my master,” he cried out, “it was borrowed!”
Au moment où l’un d’eux abattit une poutre, il laissa tomber le fer dans l’eau: "Ah! Mon seigneur, s’écria-t-il, je l’avais emprunté!
6 “Where did it fall?” asked the man of God. And when he showed him the place, the man of God cut a stick, threw it there, and made the iron float.
Où est-il tombé?" demanda l’homme de Dieu. Quand on lui eut indiqué l’endroit, il coupa un morceau de bois et l’y jeta; alors le fer surnagea.
7 “Lift it out,” he said, and the man reached out his hand and took it.
"Attire-le vers toi," dit-il; il étendit la main et le reprit.
8 Now the king of Aram was at war against Israel. After consulting with his servants, he said, “My camp will be in such and such a place.”
Le roi de Syrie était en guerre avec Israël. Après avoir délibéré avec ses officiers, il dit: "J’Établirai mon camp sur tel et tel emplacement."
9 Then the man of God sent word to the king of Israel: “Be careful passing by this place, for the Arameans are going down there.”
L’Homme de Dieu adressa alors le message suivant au roi d’Israël: "Garde-toi de passer par cet endroit, car les Syriens s’y rendent."
10 So the king of Israel sent word to the place the man of God had pointed out. Time and again Elisha warned the king, so that he was on his guard in such places.
Le roi d’Israël envoya des émissaires en observation à l’endroit que l’homme de Dieu l’avait engagé à éviter; et cela n’arriva pas seulement une ou deux fois.
11 For this reason the king of Aram became enraged and called his servants to demand of them, “Tell me, which one of us is on the side of the king of Israel?”
Profondément troublé par ce fait, le roi de Syrie convoqua ses officiers et leur dit: "Ne me ferez-vous pas connaître celui d’entre vous qui est pour le roi d’Israël?"
12 But one of his servants replied, “No one, my lord the king. For Elisha, the prophet in Israel, tells the king of Israel the very words you speak in your bedroom.”
L’Un des officiers lui répondit: "Personne, mon seigneur le roi! C’Est Elisée, le prophète d’Israël qui révèle à son roi les paroles que tu prononces dans ta chambre à coucher.
13 So the king said, “Go and see where he is, that I may send men to capture him.” On receiving the report, “Elisha is in Dothan,”
Allez voir où il est, leur dit-il, pour que je le fasse saisir." Ayant appris qu’il se trouvait à Dothân,
14 the king of Aram sent horses, chariots, and a great army. They went there by night and surrounded the city.
il y envoya des chevaux, des chars et de nombreux soldats, qui y arrivèrent la nuit et investirent la ville.
15 When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early in the morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. So he asked Elisha, “Oh, my master, what are we to do?”
Lorsque le serviteur de l’homme de Dieu, qui s’était levé de bon matin pour sortir, aperçut les soldats, les chevaux et les chars établis autour de la ville, il dit à son maître: "Ah! mon seigneur, qu’allons-nous faire?
16 “Do not be afraid,” Elisha answered, “for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”
N’Aie pas de crainte, répliqua Elisée, car nos troupes sont plus nombreuses que les leurs."
17 Then Elisha prayed, “O LORD, please open his eyes that he may see.” And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw that the hills were full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
Il fit alors cette prière: "Eternel, daigne ouvrir les yeux de mon serviteur, afin qu’il voie!" L’Eternel lui ayant ouvert les yeux, il aperçut la montagne couverte de chevaux et de chars de feu, tout autour d’Elisée.
18 As the Arameans came down against him, Elisha prayed to the LORD, “Please strike these people with blindness.” So He struck them with blindness, according to the word of Elisha.
Quand les Syriens descendirent vers le prophète, celui-ci invoqua de nouveau l’Eternel en disant: "De grâce, frappe ces gens de cécité." Ils furent frappés de cécité, selon le vœu d’Elisée.
19 And Elisha told them, “This is not the way, and this is not the city. Follow me, and I will take you to the man you are seeking.” And he led them to Samaria.
Celui-ci leur dit: "Ce n’est là ni votre chemin ni la ville où vous voulez aller; suivez-moi et je vous conduirai vers l’homme que vous cherchez." Il les mena à Samarie.
20 When they had entered Samaria, Elisha said, “O LORD, open the eyes of these men that they may see.” Then the LORD opened their eyes, and they looked around and discovered that they were in Samaria.
Lorsqu’ils furent entrés dans cette ville, Elisée dit: "Eternel, ouvre leurs yeux pour qu’ils voient!" Dieu leur ouvrit les yeux, et ils s’aperçurent qu’ils étaient à Samarie.
21 And when the king of Israel saw them, he asked Elisha, “My father, shall I kill them? Shall I kill them?”
En les voyant, le roi d’Israël dit à Elisée: "Faut-il les frapper, le faut-il, mon père?
22 “Do not kill them,” he replied. “Would you kill those you have captured with your own sword or bow? Set food and water before them, that they may eat and drink and then return to their master.”
Ne les frappe pas, dit le prophète; frappes-tu donc ceux que tu fais prisonniers par ton glaive et ton arc? Fais-leur servir du pain et de l’eau afin qu’ils mangent et boivent et retournent auprès de leur maître."
23 So the king prepared a great feast for them, and after they had finished eating and drinking, he sent them away, and they returned to their master. And the Aramean raiders did not come into the land of Israel again.
On leur servit un repas copieux; après avoir mangé et bu, ils furent congédiés et rejoignirent leur maître. Les bandes syriennes renoncèrent alors à leurs incursions dans le pays d’Israël.
24 Some time later, Ben-hadad king of Aram assembled his entire army and marched up to besiege Samaria.
Quelque temps après, Ben-Hadad, roi de Syrie, rassembla toutes ses troupes et alla mettre le siège devant Samarie.
25 So there was a great famine in Samaria. Indeed, they besieged the city so long that a donkey’s head sold for eighty shekels of silver, and a quarter cab of dove’s dung sold for five shekels of silver.
Pendant que cette ville était assiégée, une grande famine y sévissait, à tel point qu’une tête d’âne valait quatre-vingts sicles d’argent et un quart de kab de fiente de pigeon en valait cinq.
26 As the king of Israel was passing by on the wall, a woman cried out to him, “Help me, my lord the king!”
Un jour que le roi d’Israël vint à passer sur le rempart, une femme lui cria: "Viens à notre aide, mon seigneur le roi!"
27 He answered, “If the LORD does not help you, where can I find help for you? From the threshing floor or the winepress?”
Il lui répondit: "Si l’Eternel ne te secourt pas, comment puis-je te secourir? Est-ce du produit de l’aire ou du pressoir?"
28 Then the king asked her, “What is the matter?” And she answered, “This woman said to me, ‘Give up your son, that we may eat him, and tomorrow we will eat my son.’
Et il ajouta: "Que veux-tu? Cette femme-là, lui répliqua-t-elle, m’a dit: Tu livreras ton fils pour que nous le mangions aujourd’hui, et demain nous mangerons le mien.
29 So we boiled my son and ate him, and the next day I said to her, ‘Give up your son, that we may eat him.’ But she had hidden her son.”
Nous avons donc fait cuire mon fils et nous l’avons mangé. Mais, lorsque je lui ai dit, le jour suivant: Donne ton fils, pour que nous le mangions, elle l’a mis en sûreté."
30 When the king heard the words of the woman, he tore his clothes. And as he passed by on the wall, the people saw the sackcloth under his clothes next to his skin.
En entendant les paroles de cette femme, le roi déchira ses vêtements et passa ainsi sur le rempart; le peuple vit alors qu’un cilice couvrait son corps sous les vêtements.
31 He announced, “May God punish me, and ever so severely, if the head of Elisha son of Shaphat remains on his shoulders through this day!”
"Que Dieu sévisse contre moi tant et plus, dit le roi, si la tête d’Elisée, fils de Chafat, reste aujourd’hui sur ses épaules!"
32 Now Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. The king sent a messenger ahead, but before he arrived, Elisha said to the elders, “Do you see how this murderer has sent someone to cut off my head? Look, when the messenger comes, shut the door to keep him out. Is not the sound of his master’s footsteps behind him?”
Or, Elisée, entouré des anciens, était assis dans sa demeure; le roi avait envoyé un émissaire auprès de lui. Mais avant que le messager fût arrivé auprès du prophète, celui-ci dit aux anciens: "Voyez-vous ce fils d’assassin qui envoie quelqu’un pour me couper la tête! Lorsque vous verrez arriver le messager, vous fermerez la porte et vous le repousserez avec la porte. N’Entend-on pas derrière lui le bruit des pas de son maître?"
33 While Elisha was still speaking with them, the messenger came down to him. And the king said, “This calamity is from the LORD. Why should I wait for the LORD any longer?”
Il leur parlait encore quand le messager s’avança vers lui en disant: "Ce fléau vient de Dieu! Que puis-je encore espérer de l’Eternel?"
