2 Chronicles 20
1 After this, the Moabites and Ammonites, together with some of the Meunites, came to make war against Jehoshaphat.
Et dans la suite il arriva que les fils de Moab et les fils d'Ammon, et avec eux une fraction des Meünites s'avancèrent contre Josaphat pour l'attaquer.
2 Then some men came and told Jehoshaphat, “A vast army is coming against you from Edom, from beyond the Sea; they are already in Hazazon-tamar” (that is, En-gedi).
Et l'on vint en donner avis à Josaphat en ces termes: Il arrive contre toi une grande multitude depuis l'autre côté de la mer, depuis Aram, et voilà qu'ils sont à Hatsatson-Thamar, c'est-à-dire Engueddi.
3 Jehoshaphat was alarmed and set his face to seek the LORD. And he proclaimed a fast throughout Judah.
Alors Josaphat eut crainte, et il se décida à consulter pour lui l'Éternel; et il proclama un jeûne pour tout Juda.
4 So the people of Judah gathered to seek the LORD, and indeed, they came from all the cities of Judah to seek Him.
Et Juda s'assembla pour obtenir secours de l'Éternel, et de toutes les villes de Juda aussi l'on arriva pour chercher l'Éternel.
5 Then Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem in the house of the LORD in front of the new courtyard
Et Josaphat parut dans l'Assemblée de Juda et de Jérusalem au Temple de l'Éternel devant le nouveau parvis
6 and said, “O LORD, God of our fathers, are You not the God who is in heaven, and do You not rule over all the kingdoms of the nations? Power and might are in Your hand, and no one can stand against You.
et il dit: Éternel, Dieu de nos pères, n'es-tu pas Dieu dans les Cieux, et n'es-tu pas souverain de tous les royaumes des nations? et dans ta main est force et vertu, et il n'est personne qui te résiste.
7 Our God, did You not drive out the inhabitants of this land before Your people Israel and give it forever to the descendants of Abraham Your friend?
N'as-tu pas, ô notre Dieu, chassé les habitants de ce pays devant ton peuple d'Israël, et ne l'as-tu pas donné pour l'éternité à la race d'Abraham qui t'aimait?
8 They have lived in the land and have built in it a sanctuary for Your Name, saying,
Et ils l'ont habité et t'y ont érigé un Sanctuaire pour ton Nom, disant:
9 ‘If disaster comes upon us—whether sword or judgment, plague or famine—we will stand before this temple and before You, for Your Name is in this temple. We will cry out to You in our distress, and You will hear us and save us.’
Si nous sommes assaillis par la calamité, l'épée, le jugement et la peste et la famine, nous nous présenterons devant ce Temple et devant toi, car ton Nom est dans ce Temple, et nous élèverons vers toi nos cris du sein de notre détresse, et tu exauceras et sauveras.
10 And now, here are the men of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, whom You did not let Israel invade when they came out of the land of Egypt; but Israel turned away from them and did not destroy them.
Or maintenant voici les fils d'Ammon et de Moab et ceux de la montagne de Séïr, chez lesquels tu n'as pas permis aux Israélites d'entrer, lorsqu'ils venaient du pays d'Egypte et qu'ils évitèrent et ne détruisirent pas,
11 See how they are repaying us by coming to drive us out of the possession that You gave us as an inheritance.
voilà que ces gens nous payent de retour en venant nous chasser de notre propriété où tu nous as installés.
12 Our God, will You not judge them? For we are powerless before this vast army that comes against us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon You.”
O notre Dieu, n'exerceras-tu pas tes jugements sur eux? Car nous sommes sans force devant cette nombreuse multitude qui marche sur nous, et nous ne savons que faire, mais nos yeux sont tournés vers toi.
13 Meanwhile all the men of Judah, with their wives and children and little ones, were standing before the LORD.
Or tout Juda était debout devant l'Éternel, et même leurs enfants, leurs femmes et leurs fils.
14 Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jahaziel son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite from Asaph’s descendants, as he stood in the midst of the assembly.
Mais Jahaziel, fils de Zacharie, fils de Benaïa, fils de Jehiel, fils de Matthania, Lévite, des fils d'Asaph, reçut l'Esprit de l'Éternel au sein de l'Assemblée
15 And he said, “Listen, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem! Listen, King Jehoshaphat! This is what the LORD says: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army, for the battle does not belong to you, but to God.
et il dit: Attention! tout Juda, et habitants de Jérusalem, et toi, roi Josaphat! Ainsi parle à vous l'Éternel: Soyez sans crainte et sans effroi devant cette nombreuse multitude, car ce n'est pas ici votre guerre, c'est celle de Dieu.
16 Tomorrow you are to march down against them. You will see them coming up the Ascent of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the valley facing the Wilderness of Jeruel.
Demain faites une descente sur eux; voici, ils graviront la montée de Tsits et vous les atteindrez à l'extrémité de la vallée devant le Désert de Jéruël.
17 You need not fight this battle. Take up your positions, stand firm, and see the salvation of the LORD on your behalf, O Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid or discouraged. Go out and face them tomorrow, for the LORD is with you.’”
Vous n'aurez pas à vous y battre, paraissez, faites halte et soyez témoins de la délivrance que l'Éternel opérera pour vous. Juda et Jérusalem, soyez sans crainte et sans effroi, demain sortez à leur rencontre! et l'Éternel sera avec vous.
18 Then Jehoshaphat bowed facedown, and all the people of Judah and Jerusalem fell down before the LORD to worship Him.
Alors Josaphat s'inclina la face contre terre, et tout Juda et les habitants de Jérusalem se prosternèrent devant l'Éternel pour rendre hommage à l'Éternel.
19 And the Levites from the Kohathites and Korahites stood up to praise the LORD, the God of Israel, shouting in a very loud voice.
Et les Lévites, des fils des Cahathites et des fils des Coraïtes, se levèrent pour louer l'Éternel, Dieu d'Israël, à haute et forte voix.
20 Early in the morning they got up and left for the Wilderness of Tekoa. As they set out, Jehoshaphat stood up and said, “Hear me, O people of Judah and Jerusalem. Believe in the LORD your God, and you will be upheld; believe in His prophets, and you will succeed.”
Et au matin ils se levèrent et partirent pour le Désert de Thékôa, et à leur départ Josaphat parut et dit: Écoutez-moi, Juda et habitants de Jérusalem! soyez fermes à vous confier en l'Éternel, votre Dieu, et vous pourrez être fermes: confiez-vous dans ses prophètes et vous aurez le succès.
21 Then Jehoshaphat consulted with the people and appointed those who would sing to the LORD and praise the splendor of His holiness. As they went out before the army, they were singing: “Give thanks to the LORD, for His loving devotion endures forever.”
Et il se consulta avec le peuple, et il désigna des chantres de l'Éternel, qui, en costume sacré, rendaient grâces en passant devant la troupe équipée, et disaient: Louez l'Éternel, car sa miséricorde est éternelle.
22 The moment they began their shouts and praises, the LORD set ambushes against the men of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir who had come against Judah, and they were defeated.
Et dans le moment où ils commençaient le concert et le cantique, l'Éternel plaça une embuscade contre les fils d'Ammon, de Moab, et ceux de la montagne de Séïr venus en Juda, et ceux-ci furent défaits.
23 The Ammonites and Moabites rose up against the inhabitants of Mount Seir, devoting them to destruction. And when they had made an end to the inhabitants of Seir, they helped to destroy one another.
Et les fils d'Ammon et de Moab prirent position contre les habitants de la montagne de Séïr pour les dévouer et les massacrer, et quand ils en eurent fini avec les habitants de Séïr, ils s'aidèrent l'un l'autre à leur propre carnage.
24 When the men of Judah came to a place overlooking the wilderness, they looked for the vast army, but there were only corpses lying on the ground; no one had escaped.
Cependant Juda atteignit la hauteur d'où on a la vue du Désert, et là ils regardèrent du côté de la multitude, et voilà que c'étaient des cadavres jonchant la terre, et pas un n'avait échappé.
25 Then Jehoshaphat and his people went to carry off the plunder, and they found on the bodies an abundance of goods and valuables —more than they could carry away. They were gathering the plunder for three days because there was so much.
Alors Josaphat et son monde vinrent pour le pillage de leur butin, et ils trouvèrent chez eux abondance de bien, d'habits et de vases précieux, et ils en enlevèrent tant qu'ils ne les pouvaient porter; et ils furent trois jours à piller le butin, car il était considérable.
26 On the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Beracah, where they blessed the LORD. Therefore that place is called the Valley of Beracah to this day.
Et le quatrième jour ils s'assemblèrent dans la Vallée de bénédiction, car là ils bénirent l'Éternel, c'est pourquoi ils donnèrent à ce lieu le nom de Vallée de bénédiction, qu'il a encore aujourd'hui.
27 Then all the men of Judah and Jerusalem, with Jehoshaphat at their head, returned joyfully to Jerusalem, for the LORD had made them rejoice over their enemies.
Et tous les hommes de Juda et de Jérusalem, et Josaphat à leur tête, reprirent le chemin de Jérusalem dans la joie, car l'Éternel leur avait donné dans leurs ennemis une cause de joie.
28 So they entered Jerusalem and went into the house of the LORD with harps, lyres, and trumpets.
Et ils firent leur entrée à Jérusalem avec des harpes et des luths et des trompettes, jusqu'au Temple de l'Éternel.
29 And the fear of God came upon all the kingdoms of the lands when they heard that the LORD had fought against the enemies of Israel.
Et la terreur de Dieu envahit tous les royaumes des pays divers, lorsqu'ils apprirent que l'Éternel avait livré bataille aux ennemis d'Israël.
30 Then Jehoshaphat’s kingdom was at peace, for his God had given him rest on every side.
Et le royaume de Josaphat fut tranquille, et son Dieu lui donna le repos de toutes parts.
31 So Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah. He was thirty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-five years. His mother’s name was Azubah daughter of Shilhi.
Ainsi régna Josaphat sur Juda. Il avait trente-cinq ans à son avènement et régna vingt-cinq ans à Jérusalem. Or le nom de sa mère était Azuba, fille de Silchi.
32 And Jehoshaphat walked in the way of his father Asa and did not turn away from it; he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD.
Et il marcha sur les errements de son père Asa, et il n'en dévia point, pratiquant ce qui est bien aux yeux de l'Éternel.
33 The high places, however, were not removed; the people had not yet set their hearts on the God of their fathers.
Seulement les tertres ne disparurent pas, et le peuple n'avait pas non plus le cœur dirigé vers le Dieu de ses pères.
34 As for the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, from beginning to end, they are indeed written in the Chronicles of Jehu son of Hanani, which are recorded in the Book of the Kings of Israel.
Le reste des actes de Josaphat, les premiers et les derniers sont d'ailleurs consignés dans les histoires de Jéhu, fils de Hanani, insérées dans le livre des rois d'Israël.
35 Later, Jehoshaphat king of Judah made an alliance with Ahaziah king of Israel, who acted wickedly.
Et dans la suite Josaphat, roi de Juda, se confédéra avec Achazia, roi d'Israël, impie dans sa conduite.
36 They agreed to make ships to go to Tarshish, and these were built in Ezion-geber.
Et ils se confédérèrent ensemble pour construire des navires pour le voyage de Tarsis; et ils firent leurs vaisseaux à Etsion-Géber.
37 Then Eliezer son of Dodavahu of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, “Because you have allied yourself with Ahaziah, the LORD has destroyed your works.” So the ships were wrecked and were unable to sail to Tarshish.
Alors Eliézer, fils de Dodava, de Marésa, prononça une prophétie contre Josaphat en ces termes: Parce que tu t'es confédéré avec Achazia, l'Éternel a détruit ton œuvre. Et les navires furent mis en pièces et ne purent faire le voyage de Tarsis.
