< 1 Samuel 4 >
1 Thus the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now the Israelites went out to meet the Philistines in battle and camped at Ebenezer, while the Philistines camped at Aphek.
Ndipo mawu a Samueli anafika kwa Aisraeli onse. Aisraeli anapita kukamenya nkhondo ndi Afilisti. Aisraeli anamanga misasa yawo ku Ebenezeri, ndipo Afilisti anamanga ku Afeki.
2 The Philistines arrayed themselves against Israel, and as the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who struck down about four thousand men on the battlefield.
Afilisti anandanda kuyangʼana Aisraeli nayamba kumenyana. Nkhondo inakula ndipo Afilisti anagonjetsa Aisraeli napha anthu 4,000 pa malo a nkhondopo.
3 When the troops returned to the camp, the elders of Israel asked, “Why has the LORD brought defeat on us before the Philistines today? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD from Shiloh, so that it may go with us to save us from the hand of our enemies.”
Asilikali atabwerera ku misasa, akuluakulu a Israeli anafunsa kuti, “Nʼchifukwa chiyani Yehova walola kuti tigonjetsedwe lero pamaso pa Afilisti? Tiyeni tikatenge Bokosi la Chipangano cha Yehova ku Silo kuti Yehovayo abwere kukhala pakati pathu ndi kutipulumutsa mʼmanja mwa adani athu.”
4 So the people sent men to Shiloh, and they brought back the ark of the covenant of the LORD of Hosts, who sits enthroned between the cherubim. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
Choncho anatuma anthu ku Silo ndipo anakatenga Bokosi la Chipangano cha Yehova Wamphamvuzonse amene amakhala pa akerubi. Ndipo ana awiri a Eli, Hofini ndi Finehasi anatsagana nalo Bokosi la Chipangano cha Mulungu.
5 When the ark of the covenant of the LORD entered the camp, all the Israelites raised such a great shout that it shook the ground.
Bokosi la Chipangano cha Yehova litafika ku msasa, Aisraeli onse anafuwula kwambiri mpaka nthaka inagwedezeka.
6 On hearing the noise of the shout, the Philistines asked, “What is this loud shouting in the camp of the Hebrews?” And when they realized that the ark of the LORD had entered the camp,
Atamva kufuwulaku, Afilisti anafunsa, “Kodi kufuwula kwakukulu kumeneku ku misasa ya Ahebri ndi kwachiyani?” Atamva kuti Bokosi la Yehova lafika ku msasako,
7 the Philistines were afraid. “The gods have entered their camp!” they said. “Woe to us, for nothing like this has happened before.
Afilisti anachita mantha pakuti iwo ankanena kuti, “Milungu yafika ku msasa. Iwo anati, ‘Tili pamavuto. Chinthu choterechi sichinachitikepo nʼkale lomwe.
8 Woe to us! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods who struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness.
Atsoka ife! Adzatipulumutsa ndani mʼmanja mwa milungu yamphamvuyi? Iyi ndi milungu imene inakantha Aigupto ndi miliri yosiyanasiyana mʼchipululu.
9 Take courage and be men, O Philistines! Otherwise, you will serve the Hebrews just as they served you. Now be men and fight!”
Limbani mtima Afilisti! Chitani chamuna, kuti mungakhale akapolo a Ahebri monga iwowa alili akapolo anu. Chitani chamuna ndipo menyani nkhondo!’”
10 So the Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated, and each man fled to his tent. The slaughter was very great—thirty thousand foot soldiers of Israel fell.
Choncho Afilisti anamenya nkhondo, ndipo anagonjetsa Aisraeli. Iwo anathawa aliyense kwawo. Ankhondo a Aisraeli oyenda pansi okwanira 30,000 anaphedwa.
11 The ark of God was captured, and Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died.

13 When he arrived, there was Eli, sitting on his chair beside the road and watching, because his heart trembled for the ark of God. When the man entered the city to give a report, the whole city cried out.
Atafika, anapeza Eli atakhala pa mpando wake mʼmbali mwa msewu, akungoyangʼana, pakuti ankadera nkhawa Bokosi la Mulungu. Munthuyo atalowa mu mzindamo ndi kufotokoza zimene zinachitika ku nkhondo, anthu onse a mu mzindamo anayamba kulira.

Eli atamva kulirako anafunsa kuti, “Kodi phokosoli likutanthauza chiyani?” Tsono munthu wa fuko la Benjamini uja anapita msanga kwa Eli kukamufotokozera.
15 Now Eli was ninety-eight years old, and his gaze was fixed because he could not see.

Munthuyo anamuwuza Eli kuti, “Ine ndabwera kuchokera ku nkhondo, ndathawako lero lomwe lino.” Eli anafunsa, “Nanga nkhondo yayenda bwanji mwana wanga?”
17 The messenger answered, “Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has been a great slaughter among the people. Your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are both dead, and the ark of God has been captured.”
Iye anayankha kuti, “Aisraeli athawa pamaso pa Afilisti. Anthu ambirimbiri aphedwa. Ana anunso Hofini ndi Finehasi aphedwa. Bokosi la Mulungu nalonso lalandidwa.”
18 As soon as the ark of God was mentioned, Eli fell backward from his chair by the city gate, and being old and heavy, he broke his neck and died. And Eli had judged Israel forty years.
Atangotchula Bokosi la Yehova, Eli anagwa chagada, kuchoka pa mpando wake umene unali mʼmbali mwa chitseko cha mpanda. Khosi lake linathyoka ndipo anafa, pakuti anali okalamba ndi onenepa kwambiri. Iye anatsogolera Israeli zaka makumi anayi.
19 Now Eli’s daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and about to give birth. When she heard the news of the capture of God’s ark and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband, she collapsed and gave birth, for her labor pains overtook her.
Nthawiyo, mpongozi wa Eli, mkazi wa Finehasi anali woyembekezera ndipo anali pafupi kuchira. Atamva kuti Bokosi la Mulungu lalandidwa ndi kuti mpongozi wake Eli ndi mwamuna wake amwalira, ululu wa pobereka mwana unamufikira modzidzimutsa ndipo anabereka mwana.
20 As she was dying, the women attending to her said, “Do not be afraid, for you have given birth to a son!” But she did not respond or pay any heed.
Popeza mkaziyo anali pafupi kumwalira, akazi amene amamuthandiza anati, “Usaope, wabereka mwana wamwamuna” Koma iye sanayankhe kapena kulabadirako.
21 And she named the boy Ichabod, saying, “The glory has departed from Israel,” because the ark of God had been captured and her father-in-law and her husband had been killed.
Tsono iye anatcha mwanayo dzina loti Ikabodi kutanthauza kuti, “Ulemerero wachoka mu Israeli,” chifukwa cha kulandidwa Bokosi la Mulungu ndi imfa ya mpongozi wake Eli ndi mwamuna wake.
