1 Kings 12
1 Then Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had gone there to make him king.
Roboam se rendit à Sichem, car c’est à Sichem que tout Israël était venu pour le proclamer roi.
2 When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard about this, he was still in Egypt where he had fled from King Solomon and had been living ever since.
Lorsque la nouvelle en vint à Jéroboam, fils de Nebat, il était encore en Egypte, où il s’était réfugié à cause du roi Salomon, et il resta encore en Egypte.
3 So they sent for Jeroboam, and he and the whole assembly of Israel came to Rehoboam and said,
Mais on l’envoya chercher, et il vint avec toute l’assemblée d’Israël, et ils parlèrent ainsi à Roboam:
4 “Your father put a heavy yoke on us. But now you should lighten the burden of your father’s service and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you.”
"Ton père a fait peser sur nous un joug trop dur. Toi maintenant, allège le dur traitement de ton père et le joug pesant qu’il nous a imposé, et nous t’obéirons."
5 Rehoboam answered, “Go away for three days and then return to me.” So the people departed.
Il leur répondit: "Allez, attendez encore trois jours et puis revenez." Et le peuple se retira.
6 Then King Rehoboam consulted with the elders who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. “How do you advise me to respond to these people?” he asked.
Le roi Roboam consulta les vieillards qui avaient entouré Salomon de son vivant, et leur dit: "De quelle façon me conseillez-vous de répondre à ce peuple?"
7 They replied, “If you will be a servant to these people and serve them this day, and if you will respond by speaking kind words to them, they will be your servants forever.”
Et ils lui parlèrent ainsi: "Si aujourd’hui tu cèdes à ce peuple, si tu te montres conciliant à leur égard et leur donnes pour réponse de bonnes paroles, ils seront constamment tes serviteurs fidèles."
8 But Rehoboam rejected the advice of the elders; instead, he consulted the young men who had grown up with him and served him.
Mais il rejeta le conseil que lui avaient donné les vieillards, s’adressa aux jeunes gens qui avaient grandi avec lui et vivaient à ses côtés,
9 He asked them, “What message do you advise that we send back to these people who have spoken to me, saying, ‘Lighten the yoke your father put on us’?”
et leur dit: "Que devons-nous, à votre avis, répondre à ce peuple qui m’a dit: Allège le joug que ton père nous a imposé?"
10 The young men who had grown up with him replied, “This is how you should answer these people who said to you, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you should make it lighter.’ This is what you should tell them: ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist!
Les jeunes gens élevés avec lui lui répondirent: "Voici ce que tu diras à ce peuple qui t’a parlé en ces termes: Ton père a rendu pesant notre joug, mais toi, rends-le plus léger, tu leur parleras ainsi: Mon petit doigt est plus fort que n’étaient les reins de mon père.
11 Whereas my father burdened you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke. Whereas my father scourged you with whips, I will scourge you with scorpions.’”
Donc, si mon père vous a imposé un joug pesant, moi je l’appesantirai encore si mon père vous a châtiés avec des verges, moi je vous châtierai avec des scorpions."
12 After three days, Jeroboam and all the people returned to Rehoboam, since the king had said, “Come back to me on the third day.”
Jéroboam et tout le peuple vinrent le troisième jour auprès de Roboam, selon la parole du roi, qui avait dit: "Revenez me trouver le troisième jour."
13 And the king answered the people harshly. He rejected the advice of the elders
Le roi répondit durement au peuple, sans tenir compte du conseil que lui avaient donné les vieillards.
14 and spoke to them as the young men had advised, saying, “Whereas my father made your yoke heavy, I will add to your yoke. Whereas my father scourged you with whips, I will scourge you with scorpions.”
Suivant le conseil des jeunes gens, il s’exprima ainsi: "Mon père a fait peser le joug sur vous, moi je le rendrai encore plus lourd; mon père vous a châtiés avec des verges, moi je vous châtierai avec des scorpions."
15 So the king did not listen to the people, and indeed this turn of events was from the LORD, to fulfill the word He had spoken to Jeroboam son of Nebat through Ahijah the Shilonite.
Le roi ne céda donc point au peuple, la chose ayant été ainsi déterminée par le Seigneur, qui voulait exécuter ce qu’il avait déclaré, par Ahiyya de Silo, à Jéroboam, fils de Nebat.
16 When all Israel saw that the king had refused to listen to them, they answered the king: “What portion do we have in David, and what inheritance in the son of Jesse? To your tents, O Israel! Look now to your own house, O David!” So the Israelites went home,
Les Israélites, voyant que le roi ne les avait point écoutés, lui firent cette réponse: "Quelle part avons-nous de David? Quelle communauté de possession avec le fils de Jessé? A tes tentes, ô Israël! Pourvois désormais à ta maison, David!" Et Israël rentra dans ses tentes.
17 but Rehoboam still reigned over the Israelites living in the cities of Judah.
Quant aux enfants d’Israël habitant dans les villes de Juda, sur ceux-là seulement régna Roboam.
18 Then King Rehoboam sent out Adoram, who was in charge of the forced labor, but all Israel stoned him to death. And King Rehoboam mounted his chariot in haste and escaped to Jerusalem.
Le roi Roboam dépêcha Adoram, qui était préposé aux impôts; mais les Israélites le firent mourir à coups de pierres. Le roi Roboam monta à grand’peine sur un char, pour s’enfuir à Jérusalem.
19 So to this day Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David.
Israël est resté, jusqu’à ce jour, infidèle à la maison de David.
20 When all Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, they summoned him to the assembly and made him king over all Israel. Only the tribe of Judah followed the house of David.
Tout Israël, en apprenant le retour de Jéroboam, l’invita à venir à l’assemblée, et le proclama roi d’Israël; la tribu de Juda seule resta attachée à la maison de David.
21 And when Rehoboam arrived in Jerusalem, he mobilized the whole house of Judah and the tribe of Benjamin—180,000 chosen warriors—to fight against the house of Israel and restore the kingdom to Rehoboam son of Solomon.
Roboam se rendit à Jérusalem et convoqua toute la maison de Juda ainsi que la tribu de Benjamin, cent quatre-vingt mille guerriers d’élite, pour faire la guerre à la maison d’Israël afin de restituer la royauté à Roboam, fils de Salomon.
22 But the word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God:
Alors la parole divine s’adressa à Chemaya, homme de Dieu, en ces termes:
23 “Tell Rehoboam son of Solomon king of Judah, all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and the rest of the people
"Parle ainsi à Roboam, fils de Salomon, roi de Juda, à toute la maison de Juda et de Benjamin et au reste du peuple:
24 that this is what the LORD says: ‘You are not to go up and fight against your brothers, the Israelites. Each of you must return home, for this word is from Me.’” So they listened to the word of the LORD and turned back according to the word of the LORD.
Ainsi parle le Seigneur: N’Allez point faire la guerre à vos frères, les enfants d’Israël, rentrez chacun dans vos demeures, car c’est par moi que cet événement s’est produit." Ils obéirent à la parole du Seigneur, et retournèrent sur leurs pas, selon son ordre.
25 Then Jeroboam built Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim and lived there. And from there he went out and built Penuel.
Jéroboam fortifia Sichem, sur la montagne d’Ephraïm, et y résida; puis il en sortit et fortifia Penouêl.
26 Jeroboam said in his heart, “Now the kingdom might revert to the house of David.
Or, Jéroboam se dit en lui-même: "La royauté pourrait revenir maintenant à la maison de David.
27 If these people go up to offer sacrifices in the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, their hearts will return to their lord, Rehoboam king of Judah; then they will kill me and return to Rehoboam king of Judah.”
Si ce peuple monte à Jérusalem pour y offrir des sacrifices dans la maison de Dieu, il se reprendra d’amour pour son maître, pour Roboam, roi de Juda; on me tuera, et l’on reviendra à Roboam, roi de Juda."
28 After seeking advice, the king made two golden calves and said to the people, “Going up to Jerusalem is too much for you. Here, O Israel, are your gods, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.”
Après en avoir délibéré, le roi fit faire deux veaux d’or et dit au peuple: "Assez longtemps vous avez monté à Jérusalem! Voici tes dieux, Israël, qui t’ont tiré du pays d’Egypte!"
29 One calf he set up in Bethel, and the other in Dan.
Il en mit un à Béthel, et plaça l’autre à Dan.
30 And this thing became a sin; the people walked as far as Dan to worship before one of the calves.
Cet acte devint une source de péchés, car le peuple alla jusqu’à Dan rendre hommage à l’un des veaux.
31 Jeroboam also built shrines on the high places and appointed from every class of people priests who were not Levites.
Il établit aussi un centre de hauts-lieux, et il institua des prêtres pris parmi le peuple et qui n’étaient point de la tribu de Lévi
32 And Jeroboam ordained a feast on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, like the feast that was in Judah, and he offered sacrifices on the altar; he made this offering in Bethel to sacrifice to the calves he had set up, and he installed priests in Bethel for the high places he had set up.
Jéroboam institua une fête au huitième mois, le quinzième jour du mois, à l’instar de la fête célébrée en Juda, et sacrifia sur l’autel; ainsi fit-il à Béthel, offrant des sacrifices aux veaux qu’il avait fabriqués, et il installa dans Béthel les prêtres des hauts-lieux qu’il avait établis.
33 On the fifteenth day of the eighth month, a month of his own choosing, Jeroboam offered sacrifices on the altar he had set up in Bethel. So he ordained a feast for the Israelites, offered sacrifices on the altar, and burned incense.
Il monta sur l’autel qu’il avait fait à Béthel, le quinzième jour du huitième mois, mois qu’il avait imaginé de son chef; il le consacra comme fête pour les Israélites, et monta sur l’autel pour y brûler de l’encens.
