< 1 Corinthians 15 >
1 Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, and in which you stand firm.
hē bhrātaraḥ, yaḥ susaṁvādō mayā yuṣmatsamīpē nivēditō yūyañca yaṁ gr̥hītavanta āśritavantaśca taṁ puna ryuṣmān vijñāpayāmi|
2 By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.
yuṣmākaṁ viśvāsō yadi vitathō na bhavēt tarhi susaṁvādayuktāni mama vākyāni smaratāṁ yuṣmākaṁ tēna susaṁvādēna paritrāṇaṁ jāyatē|
3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,
yatō'haṁ yad yat jñāpitastadanusārāt yuṣmāsu mukhyāṁ yāṁ śikṣāṁ samārpayaṁ sēyaṁ, śāstrānusārāt khrīṣṭō'smākaṁ pāpamōcanārthaṁ prāṇān tyaktavān,
4 that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
śmaśānē sthāpitaśca tr̥tīyadinē śāstrānusārāt punarutthāpitaḥ|
5 and that He appeared to Cephas and then to the Twelve.
sa cāgrē kaiphai tataḥ paraṁ dvādaśaśiṣyēbhyō darśanaṁ dattavān|
6 After that, He appeared to more than five hundred brothers at once, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep.
tataḥ paraṁ pañcaśatādhikasaṁkhyakēbhyō bhrātr̥bhyō yugapad darśanaṁ dattavān tēṣāṁ kēcit mahānidrāṁ gatā bahutarāścādyāpi varttantē|
7 Then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles.
tadanantaraṁ yākūbāya tatpaścāt sarvvēbhyaḥ prēritēbhyō darśanaṁ dattavān|
8 And last of all He appeared to me also, as to one of untimely birth.
sarvvaśēṣē'kālajātatulyō yō'haṁ, sō'hamapi tasya darśanaṁ prāptavān|
9 For I am the least of the apostles and am unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.
īśvarasya samitiṁ prati daurātmyācaraṇād ahaṁ prēritanāma dharttum ayōgyastasmāt prēritānāṁ madhyē kṣudratamaścāsmi|
10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace to me was not in vain. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.
yādr̥śō'smi tādr̥śa īśvarasyānugrahēṇaivāsmi; aparaṁ māṁ prati tasyānugrahō niṣphalō nābhavat, anyēbhyaḥ sarvvēbhyō mayādhikaḥ śramaḥ kr̥taḥ, kintu sa mayā kr̥tastannahi matsahakāriṇēśvarasyānugrahēṇaiva|
11 Whether, then, it was I or they, this is what we preach, and this is what you believed.
ataēva mayā bhavēt tai rvā bhavēt asmābhistādr̥śī vārttā ghōṣyatē saiva ca yuṣmābhi rviśvāsēna gr̥hītā|
12 But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?
mr̥tyudaśātaḥ khrīṣṭa utthāpita iti vārttā yadi tamadhi ghōṣyatē tarhi mr̥talōkānām utthiti rnāstīti vāg yuṣmākaṁ madhyē kaiścit kutaḥ kathyatē?
13 If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised.
mr̥tānām utthiti ryadi na bhavēt tarhi khrīṣṭō'pi nōtthāpitaḥ
14 And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is worthless, and so is your faith.
khrīṣṭaśca yadyanutthāpitaḥ syāt tarhyasmākaṁ ghōṣaṇaṁ vitathaṁ yuṣmākaṁ viśvāsō'pi vitathaḥ|
15 In that case, we are also exposed as false witnesses about God. For we have testified about God that He raised Christ from the dead, but He did not raise Him if in fact the dead are not raised.
vayañcēśvarasya mr̥ṣāsākṣiṇō bhavāmaḥ, yataḥ khrīṣṭa stēnōtthāpitaḥ iti sākṣyam asmābhirīśvaramadhi dattaṁ kintu mr̥tānāmutthiti ryadi na bhavēt tarhi sa tēna nōtthāpitaḥ|
16 For if the dead are not raised, then not even Christ has been raised.
yatō mr̥tānāmutthiti ryati na bhavēt tarhi khrīṣṭō'pyutthāpitatvaṁ na gataḥ|
17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.
khrīṣṭasya yadyanutthāpitaḥ syāt tarhi yuṣmākaṁ viśvāsō vitathaḥ, yūyam adyāpi svapāpēṣu magnāstiṣṭhatha|
18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished.
aparaṁ khrīṣṭāśritā yē mānavā mahānidrāṁ gatāstē'pi nāśaṁ gatāḥ|
19 If our hope in Christ is for this life alone, we are to be pitied more than all men.
khrīṣṭō yadi kēvalamihalōkē 'smākaṁ pratyāśābhūmiḥ syāt tarhi sarvvamartyēbhyō vayamēva durbhāgyāḥ|
20 But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
idānīṁ khrīṣṭō mr̥tyudaśāta utthāpitō mahānidrāgatānāṁ madhyē prathamaphalasvarūpō jātaśca|
21 For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man.
yatō yadvat mānuṣadvārā mr̥tyuḥ prādurbhūtastadvat mānuṣadvārā mr̥tānāṁ punarutthitirapi pradurbhūtā|
22 For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.
ādamā yathā sarvvē maraṇādhīnā jātāstathā khrīṣṭēna sarvvē jīvayiṣyantē|
23 But each in his own turn: Christ the firstfruits; then at His coming, those who belong to Him.
kintvēkaikēna janēna nijē nijē paryyāya utthātavyaṁ prathamataḥ prathamajātaphalasvarūpēna khrīṣṭēna, dvitīyatastasyāgamanasamayē khrīṣṭasya lōkaiḥ|
24 Then the end will come, when He hands over the kingdom to God the Father after He has destroyed all dominion, authority, and power.
tataḥ param antō bhaviṣyati tadānīṁ sa sarvvaṁ śāsanam adhipatitvaṁ parākramañca luptvā svapitarīśvarē rājatvaṁ samarpayiṣyati|
25 For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet.
yataḥ khrīṣṭasya ripavaḥ sarvvē yāvat tēna svapādayōradhō na nipātayiṣyantē tāvat tēnaiva rājatvaṁ karttavyaṁ|
26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death.
tēna vijētavyō yaḥ śēṣaripuḥ sa mr̥tyurēva|
27 For “God has put everything under His feet.” Now when it says that everything has been put under Him, this clearly does not include the One who put everything under Him.
likhitamāstē sarvvāṇi tasya pādayō rvaśīkr̥tāni| kintu sarvvāṇyēva tasya vaśīkr̥tānītyuktē sati sarvvāṇi yēna tasya vaśīkr̥tāni sa svayaṁ tasya vaśībhūtō na jāta iti vyaktaṁ|
28 And when all things have been subjected to Him, then the Son Himself will be made subject to Him who put all things under Him, so that God may be all in all.
sarvvēṣu tasya vaśībhūtēṣu sarvvāṇi yēna putrasya vaśīkr̥tāni svayaṁ putrō'pi tasya vaśībhūtō bhaviṣyati tata īśvaraḥ sarvvēṣu sarvva ēva bhaviṣyati|
29 If these things are not so, what will those do who are baptized for the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized for them?
aparaṁ parētalōkānāṁ vinimayēna yē majjyantē taiḥ kiṁ lapsyatē? yēṣāṁ parētalōkānām utthitiḥ kēnāpi prakārēṇa na bhaviṣyati tēṣāṁ vinimayēna kutō majjanamapi tairaṅgīkriyatē?
30 And why do we endanger ourselves every hour?
vayamapi kutaḥ pratidaṇḍaṁ prāṇabhītim aṅgīkurmmahē?
31 I face death every day, brothers, as surely as I boast about you in Christ Jesus our Lord.
asmatprabhunā yīśukhrīṣṭēna yuṣmattō mama yā ślāghāstē tasyāḥ śapathaṁ kr̥tvā kathayāmi dinē dinē'haṁ mr̥tyuṁ gacchāmi|
32 If I fought wild beasts in Ephesus for human motives, what did I gain? If the dead are not raised, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.”
iphiṣanagarē vanyapaśubhiḥ sārddhaṁ yadi laukikabhāvāt mayā yuddhaṁ kr̥taṁ tarhi tēna mama kō lābhaḥ? mr̥tānām utthiti ryadi na bhavēt tarhi, kurmmō bhōjanapānē'dya śvastu mr̥tyu rbhaviṣyati|
33 Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good character.”
ityanēna dharmmāt mā bhraṁśadhvaṁ| kusaṁsargēṇa lōkānāṁ sadācārō vinaśyati|
34 Sober up as you ought, and stop sinning; for some of you are ignorant of God. I say this to your shame.
yūyaṁ yathōcitaṁ sacaitanyāstiṣṭhata, pāpaṁ mā kurudhvaṁ, yatō yuṣmākaṁ madhya īśvarīyajñānahīnāḥ kē'pi vidyantē yuṣmākaṁ trapāyai mayēdaṁ gadyatē|
35 But someone will ask, “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body will they come?”
aparaṁ mr̥talōkāḥ katham utthāsyanti? kīdr̥śaṁ vā śarīraṁ labdhvā punarēṣyantīti vākyaṁ kaścit prakṣyati|
36 You fool! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies.
hē ajña tvayā yad bījam upyatē tad yadi na mriyēta tarhi na jīvayiṣyatē|
37 And what you sow is not the body that will be, but just a seed, perhaps of wheat or something else.
yayā mūrttyā nirgantavyaṁ sā tvayā nōpyatē kintu śuṣkaṁ bījamēva; tacca gōdhūmādīnāṁ kimapi bījaṁ bhavituṁ śaknōti|
38 But God gives it a body as He has designed, and to each kind of seed He gives its own body.
īśvarēṇēva yathābhilāṣaṁ tasmai mūrtti rdīyatē, ēkaikasmai bījāya svā svā mūrttirēva dīyatē|
39 Not all flesh is the same: Men have one kind of flesh, animals have another, birds another, and fish another.
sarvvāṇi palalāni naikavidhāni santi, manuṣyapaśupakṣimatsyādīnāṁ bhinnarūpāṇi palalāni santi|
40 There are also heavenly bodies and earthly bodies. But the splendor of the heavenly bodies is of one degree, and the splendor of the earthly bodies is of another.
aparaṁ svargīyā mūrttayaḥ pārthivā mūrttayaśca vidyantē kintu svargīyānām ēkarūpaṁ tējaḥ pārthivānāñca tadanyarūpaṁ tējō'sti|
41 The sun has one degree of splendor, the moon another, and the stars another; and star differs from star in splendor.
sūryyasya tēja ēkavidhaṁ candrasya tējastadanyavidhaṁ tārāṇāñca tējō'nyavidhaṁ, tārāṇāṁ madhyē'pi tējasastāratamyaṁ vidyatē|
42 So will it be with the resurrection of the dead: What is sown is perishable; it is raised imperishable.
tatra likhitamāstē yathā, ‘ādipuruṣa ādam jīvatprāṇī babhūva,’ kintvantima ādam (khrīṣṭō) jīvanadāyaka ātmā babhūva|
43 It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power.
yad upyatē tat tucchaṁ yaccōtthāsyati tad gauravānvitaṁ; yad upyatē tannirbbalaṁ yaccōtthāsyati tat śaktiyuktaṁ|
44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.
yat śarīram upyatē tat prāṇānāṁ sadma, yacca śarīram utthāsyati tad ātmanaḥ sadma| prāṇasadmasvarūpaṁ śarīraṁ vidyatē, ātmasadmasvarūpamapi śarīraṁ vidyatē|
45 So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being;” the last Adam a life-giving spirit.
tatra likhitamāstē yathā, ādipuruṣa ādam jīvatprāṇī babhūva, kintvantima ādam (khrīṣṭō) jīvanadāyaka ātmā babhūva|
46 The spiritual, however, was not first, but the natural, and then the spiritual.
ātmasadma na prathamaṁ kintu prāṇasadmaiva tatpaścād ātmasadma|
47 The first man was of the dust of the earth, the second man from heaven.
ādyaḥ puruṣē mr̥da utpannatvāt mr̥ṇmayō dvitīyaśca puruṣaḥ svargād āgataḥ prabhuḥ|
48 As was the earthly man, so also are those who are of the earth; and as is the heavenly man, so also are those who are of heaven.
mr̥ṇmayō yādr̥śa āsīt mr̥ṇmayāḥ sarvvē tādr̥śā bhavanti svargīyaśca yādr̥śō'sti svargīyāḥ sarvvē tādr̥śā bhavanti|
49 And just as we have borne the likeness of the earthly man, so also shall we bear the likeness of the heavenly man.
mr̥ṇmayasya rūpaṁ yadvad asmābhi rdhāritaṁ tadvat svargīyasya rūpamapi dhārayiṣyatē|
50 Now I declare to you, brothers, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.
hē bhrātaraḥ, yuṣmān prati vyāharāmi, īśvarasya rājyē raktamāṁsayōradhikārō bhavituṁ na śaknōti, akṣayatvē ca kṣayasyādhikārō na bhaviṣyati|
51 Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed—
paśyatāhaṁ yuṣmabhyaṁ nigūḍhāṁ kathāṁ nivēdayāmi|
52 in an instant, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.
sarvvairasmābhi rmahānidrā na gamiṣyatē kintvantimadinē tūryyāṁ vāditāyām ēkasmin vipalē nimiṣaikamadhyē sarvvai rūpāntaraṁ gamiṣyatē, yatastūrī vādiṣyatē, mr̥talōkāścākṣayībhūtā utthāsyanti vayañca rūpāntaraṁ gamiṣyāmaḥ|
53 For the perishable must be clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality.
yataḥ kṣayaṇīyēnaitēna śarīrēṇākṣayatvaṁ parihitavyaṁ, maraṇādhīnēnaitēna dēhēna cāmaratvaṁ parihitavyaṁ|
54 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come to pass: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”
ētasmin kṣayaṇīyē śarīrē 'kṣayatvaṁ gatē, ētasman maraṇādhīnē dēhē cāmaratvaṁ gatē śāstrē likhitaṁ vacanamidaṁ sētsyati, yathā, jayēna grasyatē mr̥tyuḥ|
55 “Where, O Death, is your victory? Where, O Death, is your sting?” (Hadēs )
mr̥tyō tē kaṇṭakaṁ kutra paralōka jayaḥ kka tē|| (Hadēs )
56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.
mr̥tyōḥ kaṇṭakaṁ pāpamēva pāpasya ca balaṁ vyavasthā|
57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!
īśvaraśca dhanyō bhavatu yataḥ sō'smākaṁ prabhunā yīśukhrīṣṭēnāsmān jayayuktān vidhāpayati|
58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast and immovable. Always excel in the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.
