< Luke 23 >

1 And the whole number of them arose, and led him away to Pilate.
Ibandla lonke laseliphakama lamqhuba lamusa kuPhilathu.
2 And they began to accuse him, saying: We found this man turning the people away, and forbidding to give tribute to Cæsar, saying that he himself is Christ, a king.
Basebemethesa icala besithi, “Indoda le siyifice ixhwalisa isizwe sakithi. Iphikisana lokuthela imithelo kuKhesari njalo izenza uKhristu, inkosi.”
3 And Pilate asked him, saying: Are you the king of the Jews? He answered and said to him: You say it.
Ngakho uPhilathu wasembuza uJesu wathi, “Uyinkosi yamaJuda na?” “Kunjengoba usitsho,” waphendula uJesu.
4 Pilate said to the chief priests and to the multitudes: I find no fault in this man.
UPhilathu wasebikela abaphristi abakhulu kanye lexuku labantu wathi, “Kangiboni lutho lokwethesa umuntu lo icala.”
5 But they became the more urgent, and said: He excites the people, teaching throughout the whole of Judea, beginning from Galilee to this place.
Kodwa bagcizelela bathi, “Udunga abantu kulolonke elaseJudiya ngemfundiso yakhe. Waqalisa eGalile, usehambe wonke umango waze wazafika lapha.”
6 When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked if the man was a Galilean.
Esezwe lokhu uPhilathu wabuza ingabe indoda leyo yayingumGalile na.
7 And when he learned that he belonged to the dominion of Herod, he sent him to Herod, who was at that time in Jerusalem.
Esezwile ukuthi uJesu wayengaphansi kombuso kaHerodi wamthumela kuHerodi owayeseJerusalema ngalesosikhathi.
8 When Herod saw Jesus, he rejoiced greatly; for he had, for a long time, desired to see him, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to see some sign done by him.
UHerodi wathi embona uJesu wathaba kakhulu ngoba wayevele etshisekela ukumbona. Ethathela kulokho ayekuzwile ngaye, wayelindele ukumbona esenza omunye umangaliso.
9 And he questioned him concerning many things; but he made him no answer.
Wamjinga ngemibuzo, kodwa uJesu akaze amphendula.
10 And the chief priests and the scribes stood by, and vehemently accused him.
Abaphristi abakhulu labafundisi bomthetho labo babemi khonapho bemangalela ngokuthukuthela.
11 But Herod and his guards treated him with contempt; and having mocked him, and put on him a gaudy robe, he sent him back to Pilate.
UHerodi lamabutho akhe basebemchothoza njalo bamhoza. Bamgqokisa isigqoko esihle, basebembuyisela kuPhilathu.
12 And on the same day, Pilate and Herod became friends to each other; for, before this, they had been at enmity the one toward the other.
Ngalelolanga uHerodi loPhilathu babangabangane kodwa mandulo kwalokhu babeyizitha.
13 And Pilate called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,
UPhilathu wabizela ndawonye abaphristi abakhulu lababusi kanye labantu
14 and said to them: You have brought to me this man as one that turns the people away; and behold, I have examined him before you, and have found in this man no fault, with respect to the things of which you accuse him;
wathi kubo, “Lingilethele umuntu obekhuthaza abantu ukwenza umvukela. Sengimhlolile phambi kwenu, kodwa kangifumananga lutho kulokhu elimangalela khona.
15 nor indeed did Herod; for I sent you to him, and behold, nothing worthy of death has been done by him.
LoHerodi kafumananga lutho, ngoba usemphendukisile kithi; njengoba libona, kenzanga lutho olufanele ukuthi abulawe.
16 I will, therefore, chastise him, and release him.
Ngakho ngizamjezisa nje besengimkhulula.” [
17 For it was necessary that he should release to them one at the feast.
Kwakumele akhulule isibotshwa esisodwa esiyabe sikhethwe ngabantu mhla wedili.]
18 And the whole multitude cried out, saying: Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas.
Bamemeza ngalizwi linye bathi, “Msusele khatshana umuntu lo! Sikhululele uBharabhasi!”
19 He, for a certain seditious movement that had been made in the city, and for murder, had been thrown into prison.
(UBharabhasi wayephoselwe entolongweni ngenxa yokuvusa isiphithiphithi edolobheni langenxa yokubulala.)
20 Therefore Pilate, desiring to release Jesus, again called to them.
Kwathi ngoba efuna ukumkhulula uJesu, uPhilathu waphinda wathi kabake bacabange njalo.
21 But they answered, saying: Crucify, crucify him.
Kodwa baqhubeka bememeza besithi, “Mbethele! Mbethele!”
22 He said to them the third time: Why, what evil has he done? I have found nothing in him worthy of death. I will, therefore, chastise him, and release him.
Waphinda wakhuluma labo okwesithathu wathi, “Ngani na? Umuntu lo wenze cala bani? Angiboni lutho kuye olungafanela isigwebo sokuthi abulawe. Ngakho-ke, ngizakuthi kajeziswe besengimkhulula.”
23 But they were urgent with loud voices, demanding that he should be crucified. And their voices, and those of the chief priests, prevailed.
Kodwa baklabalala beqinisa ukuba kabethelwe, lakanye ukugcizelela kwabo kwaphumelela.
24 And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they demanded.
Ngakho uPhilathu wasemisa ukwemukela izifiso zabo.
25 And he released him that for a seditious movement, and for murder, had been thrown into prison, whom they demanded; but Jesus, he delivered up to their will.
Wayikhulula indoda leyo eyayiphoselwe entolongweni ngenxa yesiphithiphithi lokubulala, eyiyo abayicelayo, wanikela uJesu kubo ukuthi benze intando yabo.
26 And as they led him away, they laid hold of Simon, a certain Cyrenian, who was coming from the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might carry it after Jesus.
Bathi sebemqhuba babamba uSimoni waseKhureni owayesuka emaphandleni, bamethesa isiphambano bathi kasithwale ngemva kukaJesu.
27 And there followed him a great number of the people, and of women that bewailed and lamented him.
Walandelwa ngabantu abanengi kakhulu, kanye labesifazane ababemkhalela bebubula.
28 But Jesus turned, and said to them, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.
UJesu wanyemukula wathi kubo, “Madodakazi aseJerusalema, lingangikhaleli; zikhaleleni lina kanye labantwabenu.
29 For, behold, the days are coming in which they will say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never gave suck.
Ngoba sizafika isikhathi lapho elizakuthi, ‘Babusisiwe abafazi abazinyumba, lezibeletho ezingazange zithwale kanye lamabele angazange amunyise!’
30 Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us.
Lapho-ke ‘bazakuthi ezintabeni, “Sembeseni!” Lakuwo amaqaqa bathi, “Welani phezu kwethu!”’
31 For, if they do these things in the green tree, what shall be done in the dry?
Ngoba nxa abantu bezenza lezizinto lapho isihlahla simanzi, kuzakwenzakalani pho nxa sesomile?”
32 And two others, who were evil-doers, were led out to be put to death with him.
Amanye amadoda amabili, onke ayeyizigebenga, lawo aqhutshwa kanye laye esiyabulawa.
33 And when they came to the place called Skull, they there crucified him and the evil-doers; one on the right, and the other on the left.
Bathi sebefike endaweni ethiwa luKhakhayi bambethela esiphambanweni kanye lezigebenga lezo, omunye ngakwesokunene kwakhe, omunye ngakwesokhohlo.
34 And Jesus said: Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. And dividing his clothing into parts, they cast lots.
UJesu wathi, “Baba, baxolele, ngoba kabakwazi abakwenzayo.” Njalo basebesabelana izigqoko zakhe ngokutshaya inkatho.
35 And the people stood and looked on. And the rulers, with them scoffed at him, saying: He saved others, let him save himself if he is the Christ, the chosen of God.
Abantu bema bakhangela, ababusi bona bamklolodela. Bathi, “Wasindisa abanye, laye kazisindise nxa enguKhristu kaNkulunkulu, oKhethiweyo.”
36 The soldiers also derided him, coming to him and offering him vinegar,
Amabutho lawo eza amklolodela. Amnika iwayini elimunyu
37 and saying: If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself.
athi, “Nxa uyinkosi yamaJuda, zisindise.”
38 And a superscription was also written over him in Greek and in Roman and in Hebrew letters, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
Kwakulombhalo wokwazisa ngaphezulu kwakhe owawusithi: Lo yiNkosi yamaJuda.
39 And one of the evil-doers that were hanged reviled him, saying: If you are the Christ, save yourself and us.
Omunye wezigebenga owayelenga khonapho wamthuka wathi, “Kanti kayisuwe uKhristu? Zisindise wena kanye lathi!”
40 But the other answering, rebuked him, saying: Do you not fear God, since you are in the same condemnation?
Kodwa esinye isigebenga samkhuza sathi, “Kawumesabi na uNkulunkulu, njengoba ulesigwebo sinye laye.
41 And we justly; for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.
Thina sijeziswa ngokusifaneleyo ngoba sizuza lokho okufanele izenzo zethu. Kodwa umuntu lo kenzanga lutho olungalunganga.”
42 And he said to Jesus: Remember me, Lord, when thou comest in thy kingdom.
Wasesithi, “Jesu, ungikhumbule nxa ungafika embusweni wakho.”
43 And Jesus said to him: Verily I say to you, to-day you shall be with me in paradise.
UJesu wamphendula wathi, “Ngiyakutshela iqiniso ngithi, lamuhla uzakuba lami epharadise.”
44 And it was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land till the ninth hour.
Kwasekuyisikhathi esingaba lihola lesithupha, ubumnyama bembesa lonke ilizwe kwaze kwaba lihola lesificamunwemunye,
45 And the sun was darkened, and the vail of the temple was rent in the midst.
ngoba ilanga lema ukukhanya. Ikhetheni lethempeli ladabuka kabili.
46 And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and said: Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit. And when he had said this, he gave up his spirit.
UJesu wamemeza ngelizwi elikhulu wathi, “Baba, ezandleni zakho nginikela umphefumulo wami.” Esekutshilo lokhu waphefumula okokucina.
47 When the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying: Truly, this was a righteous man.
Induna yekhulu isibonile okwenzakeleyo yadumisa uNkulunkulu yathi, “Ngeqiniso lo ubeyindoda elungileyo.”
48 And all the multitudes that had come together to that sight, when they saw what was done, returned, smiting their breasts.
Kwathi bonke abantu ababebuthene ukuzabona isiga lesi sebebonile okwakwenzakele, bababuhlungu, babalosizi, babuyela emizini yabo.
49 And all his acquaintance, and the women that had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance looking on these things.
Kodwa bonke ababemazi, kanye labesifazane abamlandela besuka laye eGalile, bema bucwala babukela okwakusenzakala.
50 And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counselor, a good and a just man;
Kwakukhona indoda eyayithiwa nguJosefa, elilunga loMphakathi, eyindoda elungileyo njalo eqondileyo,
51 (he had not given his consent to their counsel and deed; ) he was of Arimathea, a city of the Jews, and he himself also waited for the kingdom of God:
owayengakuvumanga lokho abakuqumayo labakwenzayo. Yena wayevela edolobheni lakoJuda okwakuthiwa yi-Arimathiya, njalo wayelindele umbuso kaNkulunkulu.
52 this man came to Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus.
Waya kuPhilathu wayacela isidumbu sikaJesu.
53 And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulcher that had been hewed in rock, in which no one had yet been laid.
Wasesethula wasigoqela ngelembu lelineni, wasibeka ethuneni elaligujwe edwaleni lingakaze lilale muntu.
54 And the day was the preparation, and the sabbath was beginning.
Kwakulusuku lokuLungiselela, iSabatha selizaqalisa.
55 And the women that had come with him from Galilee followed after and saw the sepulcher, and how his body was laid.
Abesifazane ababebuye loJesu esuka eGalile bamlandela uJosefa balibona ithuna lokuthi isidumbu sakhe salaliswa njani kulo.
56 And they returned, and prepared spices and ointment; and they rested on the sabbath, according to the commandment.
Basebebuyela ekhaya bayalungisa amagcobo lamakha. Kodwa baphumula ngeSabatha bethobela umlayo.
