John 8
1 But Jesus went to the mount of Olives.
mais Jésus s'est rendu sur le mont des Oliviers.
2 And in the morning he again entered the temple, and all the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them.
Or, de grand matin, il entra de nouveau dans le temple, et tout le peuple vint à lui. Il s'assit et les enseigna.
3 And the scribes and Pharisees brought to him a woman who had been detected in adultery; and they made her stand in the midst,
Les scribes et les pharisiens amenèrent une femme surprise en adultère. L'ayant placée au milieu,
4 and said to him: Teacher, this woman was detected in adultery; in the very act.
ils lui dirent: Maître, nous avons trouvé cette femme adultère, en flagrant délit.
5 Now Moses, in his law, commanded us, that such should be stoned; but what say you?
Or, dans notre loi, Moïse nous a ordonné de lapider de telles femmes. Que dis-tu donc d'elle? »
6 This they said to tempt him, that they might bring an accusation against him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground.
Ils dirent cela pour l'éprouver, afin d'avoir quelque chose à lui reprocher. Mais Jésus se baissa et écrivit sur la terre avec son doigt.
7 But as they continued to ask him, he stood up, and said to them: Let him among you who is without sin, first throw a stone at her.
Comme ils continuaient à l'interroger, il leva les yeux et leur dit: « Que celui d'entre vous qui est sans péché lui jette la première pierre. »
8 And again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.
De nouveau, il se baissa et écrivit sur la terre avec son doigt.
9 But having heard him, and being convicted by their conscience, they went out, one by one, beginning from the oldest, even to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.
Ceux-ci, après avoir entendu cela, convaincus par leur conscience, sortirent un par un, depuis le plus âgé jusqu'au dernier. Jésus resta seul avec la femme, là où elle était, au milieu.
10 And when Jesus stood up, and saw no one but the woman, he said to her: Woman, where are those who accused you? Has no one condemned you?
Jésus, s'étant levé, la vit et dit: « Femme, où sont tes accusateurs? Personne ne t'a condamnée? »
11 She said: No one, sir. Jesus said to her: Neither do I condemn you; go, and sin no more.
Elle a dit: « Personne, Seigneur. » Jésus a dit: « Je ne te condamne pas non plus. Va ton chemin. Désormais, ne pèche plus. »
12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying: I am the light of the world; he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
Jésus leur parla de nouveau, en disant: « Je suis la lumière du monde. Celui qui me suit ne marchera pas dans les ténèbres, mais il aura la lumière de la vie. »
13 Then the Pharisees said to him: You testify concerning yourself; your testimony is not worthy of credit.
Les pharisiens lui dirent donc: « Tu témoignes de toi-même. Ton témoignage n'est pas valable. »
14 Jesus answered and said to them: Though I testify concerning myself, my testimony is worthy of credit; for I know whence I came, and whither I go. But you know not whence I came, and whither I go.
Jésus leur répondit: « Même si je rends témoignage de moi-même, mon témoignage est vrai, car je sais d'où je viens et où je vais; mais vous, vous ne savez ni d'où je viens ni où je vais.
15 You judge according to the flesh; I judge no man.
Vous jugez selon la chair. Moi, je ne juge personne.
16 And yet if I judge, my judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and the Father who sent me.
Et quand bien même je jugerais, mon jugement est vrai, car je ne suis pas seul, mais je suis avec le Père qui m'a envoyé.
17 It is also written in your law, The testimony of two is worthy of credit.
Il est aussi écrit dans votre loi que le témoignage de deux personnes est valable.
18 I am one that testify concerning myself, and the Father who sent me, testifies of me.
Moi, je suis celui qui rend témoignage de moi-même, et le Père qui m'a envoyé rend témoignage de moi. »
19 Then they said to him: Where is your Father? Jesus answered: You know neither me, nor my Father. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also.
Ils lui dirent donc: « Où est ton Père? » Jésus répondit: « Vous ne connaissez ni moi ni mon Père. Si vous me connaissiez, vous connaîtriez aussi mon Père. »
20 These words Jesus spoke in the treasury, as he taught in the temple; and no one laid hands on him, because his hour had not yet come.
Jésus prononça ces paroles dans le trésor, comme il enseignait dans le temple. Et personne ne l'arrêta, parce que son heure n'était pas encore venue.
21 Then spoke Jesus to them again; I go away, and you will seek me, and in your sin you shall die; whither I go, you can not come.
Jésus leur dit donc encore: « Je m'en vais, et vous me chercherez, et vous mourrez dans vos péchés. Là où je vais, vous ne pouvez pas venir. »
22 Then said the Jews: Will he kill himself, because he says, Whither I go, you can not come?
Les Juifs dirent donc: « Se tuera-t-il, parce qu'il dit: « Où je vais, vous ne pouvez pas venir »? »
23 And he said to them: You are from beneath, I am from above; you are of this world, I am not of this world.
Il leur dit: « Vous êtes d'en bas. Moi, je suis d'en haut. Vous êtes de ce monde. Je ne suis pas de ce monde.
24 Therefore said I to you, that you shall die in your sins. For if you believe not that I am, He, you shall die in your sins.
Je vous ai donc dit que vous mourrez dans vos péchés; car si vous ne croyez pas que je suis lui, vous mourrez dans vos péchés. »
25 Then they said to him: Who are you? And Jesus said to them: The same that I said to you at the beginning.
Ils lui dirent donc: « Qui es-tu? » Jésus leur dit: « Ce que je vous dis depuis le commencement.
26 I have many things to say, and to judge with respect to you; but he that sent me is true; and what things I have heard from him, these I speak to the world.
J'ai beaucoup de choses à dire et à juger à votre sujet. Mais celui qui m'a envoyé est vrai; et ce que j'ai entendu de lui, je le dis au monde entier. »
27 They knew not that he was speaking to them of the Father.
Ils ne comprenaient pas qu'il leur parlait du Père.
28 Then said Jesus to them: When you have lifted up the Son of man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing of myself, but as the Father has taught me I speak these things.
Jésus leur dit donc: « Quand vous aurez élevé le Fils de l'homme, vous saurez que c'est moi, et je ne fais rien de moi-même; mais c'est comme mon Père me l'a enseigné que je dis ces choses.
29 And he that sent me is with me. The Father has not left me alone, because I always do what is pleasing to him.
Celui qui m'a envoyé est avec moi. Le Père ne m'a pas laissé seul, car je fais toujours ce qui lui est agréable. »
30 While he was speaking these words, many believed on him.
Comme il parlait ainsi, beaucoup crurent en lui.
31 Then said Jesus to those Jews that believed on him: If you continue in my word, you are my disciples indeed,
Jésus dit donc aux Juifs qui avaient cru en lui: « Si vous demeurez dans ma parole, vous êtes vraiment mes disciples.
32 and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
Vous connaîtrez la vérité, et la vérité vous rendra libres. »
33 They answered him: We are the posterity of Abraham, and have never been in bondage to any one. How say you, You shall be made free?
Ils lui répondirent: « Nous sommes la descendance d'Abraham, et nous n'avons jamais été asservis à personne. Comment peux-tu dire: « Vous serez libérés »? »
34 Jesus answered them: Verily, verily I say to you, whoever works sin is the servant of sin.
Jésus leur répondit: Je vous le dis en vérité, quiconque commet un péché est esclave du péché.
Un esclave ne demeure pas toujours dans la maison. Un fils demeure pour toujours. (aiōn g165)
36 Therefore, if the Son make you free, you shall be free indeed.
Si donc le Fils vous rend libres, vous serez vraiment libres.
37 I know that you are the posterity of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me, because my word has no place in you.
Je sais que vous êtes la postérité d'Abraham, et pourtant vous cherchez à me tuer, parce que ma parole ne trouve pas de place en vous.
38 I speak what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have seen with your father.
Je dis les choses que j'ai vues avec mon Père; et vous aussi, vous faites les choses que vous avez vues avec votre père. »
39 They answered and said to him: Abra ham is our father. Jesus said to them: If you were the children of Abraham, you would do the works of Abraham.
Ils lui répondirent: « Notre père est Abraham. » Jésus leur dit: « Si vous étiez les enfants d'Abraham, vous feriez les œuvres d'Abraham.
40 But now you seek to kill me, a man that has spoken to you the truth, which I have heard from God; this Abraham did not.
Mais maintenant vous cherchez à me tuer, moi qui vous ai dit la vérité que j'ai entendue de Dieu. Ce n'est pas Abraham qui a fait cela.
41 You do the works of your father. They said to him: We were not born of lewdness; we have one father, God.
Vous faites les œuvres de votre père. » Ils lui dirent: « Nous ne sommes pas nés de l'immoralité sexuelle. Nous avons un seul Père, Dieu. »
42 Jesus said to them: If God were your father, you would love me; for I came forth from God and have come hither; nor, indeed, did I come of myself, but he sent me.
C'est pourquoi Jésus leur dit: « Si Dieu était votre père, vous m'aimeriez, car je suis sorti et je suis venu de Dieu. Car je ne suis pas venu de moi-même, mais c'est lui qui m'a envoyé.
43 Why do you not know what I say? Because you can not understand my words.
Pourquoi ne comprenez-vous pas ma parole? Parce que vous n'entendez pas ma parole.
44 You are of your father, the devil; and the desires of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and stood not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks that which is false, he speaks from what is his own; for he is a liar, and the father of it.
Vous êtes de votre père le diable, et vous voulez faire les désirs de votre père. Il a été meurtrier dès le commencement, et il ne tient pas dans la vérité, parce qu'il n'y a pas de vérité en lui. Quand il dit un mensonge, il parle de lui-même, car il est menteur et père du mensonge.
45 But because I speak the truth, you believe me not.
Mais parce que je dis la vérité, vous ne me croyez pas.
46 Which of you convicts me of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe me?
Lequel d'entre vous me convainc de péché? Si je dis la vérité, pourquoi ne me croyez-vous pas?
47 He that is of God, hears God’s words. For this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God.
Celui qui est de Dieu entend les paroles de Dieu. C'est pourquoi vous n'entendez pas, parce que vous n'êtes pas de Dieu. »
48 The Jews answered, and said to him: Do we not well say that you are a Samaritan, and have a demon?
Alors les Juifs lui répondirent: « Ne disons-nous pas bien que tu es un Samaritain, et que tu as un démon? »
49 Jesus answered: I have not a demon; but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me.
Jésus répondit: « Je n'ai pas de démon, mais j'honore mon Père et vous me déshonorez.
50 I seek not my own glory; there is one that seeks and judges.
Mais je ne cherche pas ma propre gloire. Il y a quelqu'un qui cherche et qui juge.
En vérité, je vous le dis, si quelqu'un garde ma parole, il ne verra jamais la mort. » (aiōn g165)
52 Then said the Jews to him: Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and you say, If a man keep my word, he shall never taste of death. (aiōn g165)
Alors les Juifs lui dirent: « Nous savons maintenant que tu as un démon. Abraham est mort, ainsi que les prophètes; et toi, tu dis: « Si quelqu'un garde ma parole, il ne goûtera jamais à la mort. (aiōn g165)
53 Are you greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? And the prophets are dead; whom do you make yourself?
Es-tu plus grand que notre père Abraham, qui est mort? Les prophètes sont morts. Pour qui te prends-tu? »
54 Jesus answered: If I honor myself, my honor is nothing; it is my Father that honors me, of whom you say, that he is your God.
Jésus répondit: « Si je me glorifie moi-même, ma gloire n'est rien. C'est mon Père qui me glorifie, lui dont vous dites qu'il est notre Dieu.
55 And yet you have not known him. But I know him; and if I should say that I do not know him, I should be like yourselves, a liar. But I know him, and I keep his word.
Vous ne l'avez pas connu, mais moi, je le connais. Si je disais: « Je ne le connais pas », je serais comme vous, un menteur. Mais moi, je le connais et je garde sa parole.
56 Abraham, your father, rejoiced that he could see my day; and he saw it, and was glad.
Ton père Abraham s'est réjoui de voir mon jour. Il l'a vu et s'est réjoui. »
57 Then the Jews said to him: You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?
Les Juifs lui dirent donc: « Tu n'as pas encore cinquante ans! As-tu vu Abraham? »
58 Jesus said to them: Verily, verily I say to you, before Abraham came into being, I was.
Jésus leur dit: « En vérité, je vous le dis, avant qu'Abraham n'existe, JE SUIS. »
59 Then they took up stones to throw at him. But Jesus concealed himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them; and so passed by.
Ils prirent donc des pierres pour les jeter contre lui, mais Jésus se cacha et sortit du temple, après avoir traversé le milieu d'eux, et il passa ainsi.
