< John 4 >

1 When, therefore, the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and immersing more disciples than John,
When therefore the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and immersing more disciples than John
2 (though not Jesus himself, but his disciples immersed, )
(although Jesus himself did not immerse, but his disciples),
3 he left Judea, and went again into Galilee.
he left Judea, and departed into Galilee.
4 And it was necessary that he should go through Samaria.
And it was necessary for him to pass through Samaria.
5 He came, therefore, to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
So he comes to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near the place that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
6 And Jacob’s well was there. Jesus, therefore, wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well. It was about the sixth hour.
And Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore being wearied from the journey, thus was sitting on the well. It was about the sixth hour.
7 There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. And Jesus said to her: Give me to drink.
A woman of Samaria comes to draw water. Jesus says to her, Give me to drink.
8 For his disciples had gone into the city to buy food.
For his disciples had gone away into the city so that they might buy food.
9 Then the woman of Samaria said to him: How is it that you, who are a Jew, ask drink of me, who am a woman of Samaria? (For the Jews have no social intercourse with the Samaritans.)
The Samaritan woman therefore says to him, How do thou, being Jewish, ask to drink from me, being a Samaritan woman, for Jews do not associate with Samaritans?
10 Jesus answered and said to her: If you had known the gift of God, and who it is that said to you, Give me to drink, you would have asked of him, and he would have given you living water.
Jesus answered and said to her, If thou had known the gift of God, and who it is who says to thee, Give me to drink, thou would have asked him, and he would have given thee living water.
11 The woman said to him: Sir, you have no vessel with which you can draw, and the well is deep; whence have you that living water?
The woman says to him, Sir, thou have not even a container, and the well is deep. From where then have thou the living water?
12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, and his sons, and his cattle?
Are thou greater than our father Jacob who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, and his sons, and his livestock?
13 Jesus answered and said to her: Whoever drinks of this water, will thirst again;
Jesus answered and said to her, Every man who drinks of this water will thirst again,
14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him, shall never thirst. But the water that I will give him, shall be in him a fountain of water springing up in order to eternal life. (aiōn g165, aiōnios g166)
but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will, no, not thirst into the age. But the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life. (aiōn g165, aiōnios g166)
15 The woman said to him: Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come hither to draw.
The woman says to him, Give me this water, sir, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw out.
16 Jesus said to her: Go, call your husband, and come hither.
Jesus says to her, Go, call thy husband, and come here.
17 The woman answered and said: I have no husband. Jesus said to her: You have well said. I have no husband;
The woman answered and said to him, I have no husband. Jesus says to her, Thou said correctly, I have no husband.
18 for you have had five husbands, and he whom you now have is not your husband. In this you have spoken truly.
For thou have had five husbands, and he whom thou now have is not thy husband. This thou have said true.
19 The woman said to him: Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
The woman says to him, Sir, I perceive that thou are a prophet.
20 Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where we ought to worship.
Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and ye say that in Jerusalem is the place where it is necessary to worship.
21 Jesus said to her: Woman, believe me, the hour is coming, when neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, will you worship the Father.
Jesus says to her, Woman, believe me, that the hour is coming when neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem will ye worship the Father.
22 You worship you know not what; we know what we worship; for salvation is of the Jews.
Ye worship what ye do not know. We worship what we know, because salvation is from the Jews.
23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth; for the Father seeks such to worship him.
But an hour comes, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for also the Father seeks such kind who worship him.
24 God is spirit; and they that worship him, must worship him in spirit and in truth.
God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.
25 The woman said to him: I know that Messiah (who is called Christ) is coming; when he comes, he will tell us all things.
The woman says to him, I know that Messiah comes, he who is called Christ. When that man comes he will declare all things to us.
26 Jesus said to her: I who speak to you am he.
Jesus says to her, I who speak to thee am the man.
27 And upon this his disciples came, and were astonished that he was talking with the woman. Yet no one said: What seekest thou? or, why talkest thou with her?
And upon this his disciples came. And they marveled that he spoke with the woman, yet no man said, What seek thou? or, Why do thou speak with her?
28 Then the woman left her water-pot, and went into the city, and said to the men:
The woman therefore left her water pot, and departed into the city, and says to the men,
29 Come, see a man who has told me all things that I ever did. Is not this the Christ?
Come, see a man who told me all, as many things as I did. Is not this the Christ?
30 Then they went out of the city and came to him.
They went out of the city, and came to him.
31 In the mean time, the disciples besought him, saying: Rabbi, eat.
In the meanwhile the disciples asked him, saying, Rabbi, eat.
32 But he said to them: I have food to eat of which you know not.
But he said to them, I have food to eat that ye know not.
33 Then the disciples said one to another: Has any one brought him food?
The disciples therefore said to each other, Did any man bring him to eat?
34 Jesus said to them: My food is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.
Jesus says to them, My food is that I do the will of him who sent me, and may finish his work.
35 Do you not say, There are yet four months, and harvest comes? Behold, I say to you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields, for they are already white for the harvest.
Do ye not say, There are still four months and the harvest comes? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and see the fields, that they are already white for harvest.
36 And he that reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for life eternal; that he that sows, and he that reaps, may rejoice together. (aiōnios g166)
And he who reaps receives a wage and gathers fruit for eternal life, so that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. (aiōnios g166)
37 For in this is the saying true, One sows and another reaps.
For in this the saying is true, One is who sows, and another who reaps.
38 I have sent you to reap that on which you bestowed no labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labors.
I sent you to reap what ye have not labored. Others have labored, and ye have entered into their labor.
39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him, because of the word of the woman who testified, He told me all things that I ever did.
And many of the Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the word of the woman, who testified, He told me all, as many things as I did.
40 When, therefore, the Samaritans came to him, they besought him to abide with them. And he abode there two days.
So when the Samaritans came to him they asked him to remain with them, and he remained there two days.
41 And many more believed because of his own word;
And many more believed because of his word.
42 and they said to the woman: We no longer believe because of what you said, for we ourselves have heard, and we know that this is in truth the Savior of the world, the Christ.
And they said to the woman, We no longer believe because of thy speaking, for we have heard ourselves, and know that this really is the Savior of the world, the Christ.
43 And after two days he departed thence, and went into Galilee;
And after the two days he departed from there and went into Galilee.
44 for Jesus himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.
For Jesus himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own fatherland.
45 Therefore, when he came into Galilee, the Galileans received him, because they had seen all things that he had done in Jerusalem during the feast; for they themselves had gone to the feast.
So when he came into Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all the things that he did in Jerusalem at the feast, for they also went to the feast.
46 Then Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he had made the water wine. And there was a certain courtier, whose sou was sick in Capernaum.
Jesus therefore came again to Cana of Galilee where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman whose son was sick at Capernaum.
47 When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea into Galilee, he went to him, and besought him that he would come down, and restore his son to health, for he was about to die.
This man having heard that Jesus comes out of Judea into Galilee, he went to him and besought him that he would come down and heal his son, for he was going to die.
48 Then said Jesus to him: Unless you see signs and wonders, you will not believe.
Jesus therefore said to him, Unless ye may see signs and wonders, ye will, no, not believe.
49 The courtier said to him: Sir, come down before my child die.
The nobleman says to him, Sir, come down before my child dies.
50 Jesus said to him: Go, your child lives. And the man believed the word that Jesus spoke, and departed.
Jesus says to him, Go, thy son lives. And the man believed the word that Jesus said to him, and he departed.
51 And as he was going down, his servants met him, and said: Your son lives.
And as he was now going down, his bondmen met him and reported, saying, Thy boy lives.
52 Then he inquired of them the hour in which he was restored to health. And they said to him: Yesterday, at the seventh hour, the fever left him.
So he inquired of them the hour in which he fared well. And they said to him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.
53 Then his father knew that it was in the same hour in which Jesus said to him, Your son lives. And he himself, and all his house, believed.
So the father knew that it was at that hour in which Jesus said to him, Thy son lives. And he himself believed and his whole house.
54 This is the second sign which Jesus did, when he came out of Judea into Galilee.
This again is a second sign that Jesus did, having come out of Judea into Galilee.
