Acts 13
1 Now there were certain prophets and teachers in the church that was at Antioch; Barnabas, and Simeon, who is called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, who was brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
Ἦσαν δὲ ἐν Ἀντιοχείᾳ, κατὰ τὴν οὖσαν ἐκκλησίαν προφῆται καὶ διδάσκαλοι: ὅ τε Βαρναβᾶς, καὶ Συμεὼν ὁ καλούμενος Νίγερ, καὶ Λούκιος ὁ Κυρηναῖος, Μαναήν τε Ἡρῴδου τοῦ τετράρχου σύντροφος, καὶ Σαῦλος.
2 And while they were ministering to the Lord, and fasting, the Holy Spirit said: Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul, to the work to which I have called them.
Λειτουργούντων δὲ αὐτῶν τῷ ˚Κυρίῳ καὶ νηστευόντων, εἶπεν τὸ ˚Πνεῦμα τὸ Ἅγιον, “Ἀφορίσατε δή μοι τὸν Βαρναβᾶν καὶ Σαῦλον, εἰς τὸ ἔργον ὃ προσκέκλημαι αὐτούς.”
3 Then, after they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.
Τότε νηστεύσαντες, καὶ προσευξάμενοι, καὶ ἐπιθέντες τὰς χεῖρας αὐτοῖς, ἀπέλυσαν.
4 Therefore, having been sent forth by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia, and thence sailed to Cyprus.
Αὐτοὶ μὲν οὖν ἐκπεμφθέντες ὑπὸ τοῦ Ἁγίου ˚Πνεύματος, κατῆλθον εἰς Σελεύκειαν, ἐκεῖθέν τε ἀπέπλευσαν εἰς Κύπρον.
5 And while they were in Salamis, they preached the word of God in the synagogue of the Jews; and they had John as their attendant.
Καὶ γενόμενοι ἐν Σαλαμῖνι, κατήγγελλον τὸν λόγον τοῦ ˚Θεοῦ ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς τῶν Ἰουδαίων. Εἶχον δὲ καὶ Ἰωάννην, ὑπηρέτην.
6 And having gone through the island as far as Paphos, they found a certain magician, a Jewish false prophet, whose name was Bar-jesus;
Διελθόντες δὲ ὅλην τὴν νῆσον ἄχρι Πάφου, εὗρον ἄνδρα, τινὰ μάγον ψευδοπροφήτην Ἰουδαῖον, ᾧ ὄνομα Βαριησοῦς,
7 and he was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, who was a man of intelligence. This man called for Barnabas and Saul, and expressed an earnest wish to hear the word of God.
ὃς ἦν σὺν τῷ ἀνθυπάτῳ Σεργίῳ Παύλῳ, ἀνδρὶ συνετῷ. Οὗτος, προσκαλεσάμενος Βαρναβᾶν καὶ Σαῦλον, ἐπεζήτησεν ἀκοῦσαι τὸν λόγον τοῦ ˚Θεοῦ.
8 But the magician Elymas (for this is his name, when translated) withstood them, desiring to turn away the proconsul from the faith.
Ἀνθίστατο δὲ αὐτοῖς Ἐλύμας ὁ μάγος (οὕτως γὰρ μεθερμηνεύεται τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ) ζητῶν διαστρέψαι τὸν ἀνθύπατον ἀπὸ τῆς πίστεως.
9 Then Saul, who is also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, and looking earnestly upon him,
Σαῦλος δέ, ὁ καὶ Παῦλος, πλησθεὶς ˚Πνεύματος Ἁγίου, ἀτενίσας εἰς αὐτὸν
10 said: O full of all deceit and all wickedness, child of the devil, enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?
εἶπεν, “Ὦ πλήρης παντὸς δόλου καὶ πάσης ῥᾳδιουργίας, υἱὲ διαβόλου, ἐχθρὲ πάσης δικαιοσύνης, οὐ παύσῃ διαστρέφων τὰς ὁδοὺς τοῦ ˚Κυρίου τὰς εὐθείας;
11 And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you shall be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness, and he went about and sought some to lead him by the hand.
Καὶ νῦν ἰδοὺ, χεὶρ ˚Κυρίου ἐπὶ σέ, καὶ ἔσῃ τυφλὸς, μὴ βλέπων τὸν ἥλιον ἄχρι καιροῦ.” Παραχρῆμά τε ἔπεσεν ἐπʼ αὐτὸν ἀχλὺς καὶ σκότος, καὶ περιάγων ἐζήτει χειραγωγούς.
12 Then the proconsul, seeing what was done, believed, being amazed at the teaching of the Lord.
Τότε ἰδὼν ὁ ἀνθύπατος τὸ γεγονὸς, ἐπίστευσεν ἐκπλησσόμενος ἐπὶ τῇ διδαχῇ τοῦ ˚Κυρίου.
13 And Paul and his companions put to sea from Paphos, and went to Perga in Pamphylia. But John withdrew from them, and returned to Jerusalem.
Ἀναχθέντες δὲ ἀπὸ τῆς Πάφου οἱ περὶ, Παῦλον ἦλθον εἰς Πέργην τῆς Παμφυλίας. Ἰωάννης δὲ ἀποχωρήσας ἀπʼ αὐτῶν, ὑπέστρεψεν εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα.
14 But having passed through from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia; and on the sabbath-day they went into the synagogue, and sat down.
Αὐτοὶ δὲ, διελθόντες ἀπὸ τῆς Πέργης, παρεγένοντο εἰς Ἀντιόχειαν τὴν Πισιδίαν, καὶ ἐλθόντες εἰς τὴν συναγωγὴν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῶν Σαββάτων, ἐκάθισαν.
15 After the reading of the law and the prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent to them, saying: Brethren, if you have a word of exhortation for the people, speak.
Μετὰ δὲ τὴν ἀνάγνωσιν τοῦ νόμου καὶ τῶν προφητῶν, ἀπέστειλαν οἱ ἀρχισυνάγωγοι πρὸς αὐτοὺς λέγοντες, “Ἄνδρες, ἀδελφοί, εἴ τίς ἐστιν ἐν ὑμῖν λόγος παρακλήσεως πρὸς τὸν λαόν, λέγετε.”
16 Then Paul arose, and waving his hand, said: Men of Israel, and you who fear God, give audience.
Ἀναστὰς δὲ Παῦλος, καὶ κατασείσας τῇ χειρὶ εἶπεν, “Ἄνδρες, Ἰσραηλῖται, καὶ οἱ φοβούμενοι τὸν ˚Θεόν, ἀκούσατε.
17 The God of this people chose our fathers, and exalted the people when they sojourned in the land of Egypt, and with an uplifted arm he brought them out from it.
Ὁ ˚Θεὸς τοῦ λαοῦ τούτου Ἰσραὴλ ἐξελέξατο τοὺς πατέρας ἡμῶν, καὶ τὸν λαὸν ὕψωσεν ἐν τῇ παροικίᾳ ἐν γῇ Αἰγύπτου, καὶ μετὰ βραχίονος ὑψηλοῦ, ἐξήγαγεν αὐτοὺς ἐξ αὐτῆς,
18 And for about forty years, he cherished them in the wilderness.
καί ὡς τεσσερακονταετῆ χρόνον ἐτροποφόρησεν αὐτοὺς ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ,
19 And when he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Chanaan, he divided their land among them by lot.
καὶ καθελὼν ἔθνη ἑπτὰ ἐν γῇ Χανάαν, κατεκληρονόμησεν τὴν γῆν αὐτῶν–
20 And after that he gave them judges, for about four hundred and fifty years, till Samuel the prophet.
ὡς ἔτεσι τετρακοσίοις καὶ πεντήκοντα. Καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα, ἔδωκεν κριτὰς ἕως Σαμουὴλ προφήτου.
21 And afterward they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul the son of Kis, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years.
Κἀκεῖθεν ᾐτήσαντο βασιλέα, καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς ὁ ˚Θεὸς τὸν Σαοὺλ, υἱὸν Κείς, ἄνδρα ἐκ φυλῆς Βενιαμίν, ἔτη τεσσεράκοντα.
22 And when he had removed him, he raised up David to be their king; to whom he gave this testimony: I have found David the son of Jesse a man after my own heart, who will do all my will.
Καὶ μεταστήσας αὐτὸν, ἤγειρεν τὸν Δαυὶδ αὐτοῖς εἰς βασιλέα, ᾧ καὶ εἶπεν μαρτυρήσας, ‘“Εὗρον Δαυὶδ” τὸν τοῦ Ἰεσσαί, “ἄνδρα κατὰ τὴν καρδίαν μου”, ὃς ποιήσει πάντα τὰ θελήματά μου.’
23 From the posterity of this man, God, according to his promise, raised up for Israel a Savior, Jesus;
Τούτου ὁ ˚Θεὸς ἀπὸ τοῦ σπέρματος κατʼ ἐπαγγελίαν, ἤγαγεν τῷ Ἰσραὴλ Σωτῆρα, ˚Ἰησοῦν,
24 John having first preached, before his coming, the immersion of repentance to all the people of Israel.
προκηρύξαντος Ἰωάννου πρὸ προσώπου τῆς εἰσόδου αὐτοῦ, βάπτισμα μετανοίας παντὶ τῷ λαῷ Ἰσραήλ.
25 And as John was finishing his course, he said: Who do you suppose that I am? I am not he; but behold, there is coming after me one, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to loose.
Ὡς δὲ ἐπλήρου Ἰωάννης τὸν δρόμον, ἔλεγεν, ‘Τί ἐμὲ ὑπονοεῖτε εἶναι; Οὐκ εἰμὶ ἐγώ, ἀλλʼ ἰδοὺ, ἔρχεται μετʼ ἐμὲ, οὗ οὐκ εἰμὶ ἄξιος τὸ ὑπόδημα τῶν ποδῶν λῦσαι.’
26 Brethren, sons of the family of Abraham, and those among you who fear God, to you is the word of this salvation sent.
Ἄνδρες, ἀδελφοί, υἱοὶ γένους Ἀβραὰμ, καὶ οἱ ἐν ὑμῖν φοβούμενοι τὸν ˚Θεόν, ἡμῖν ὁ λόγος τῆς σωτηρίας ταύτης ἐξαπεστάλη.
27 For those who dwell in Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they did not know him, nor the words of the prophets, which are read every sabbath-day, have fulfilled them in condemning him.
Οἱ γὰρ κατοικοῦντες ἐν Ἰερουσαλὴμ καὶ οἱ ἄρχοντες αὐτῶν, τοῦτον ἀγνοήσαντες καὶ τὰς φωνὰς τῶν προφητῶν, τὰς κατὰ πᾶν Σάββατον ἀναγινωσκομένας, κρίναντες ἐπλήρωσαν.
28 And though they found no cause of death, yet they demanded of Pilate that he should be slain.
Καὶ μηδεμίαν αἰτίαν θανάτου εὑρόντες, ᾐτήσαντο Πιλᾶτον ἀναιρεθῆναι αὐτόν.
29 And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a sepulcher.
Ὡς δὲ ἐτέλεσαν πάντα τὰ περὶ αὐτοῦ γεγραμμένα, καθελόντες ἀπὸ τοῦ ξύλου, ἔθηκαν εἰς μνημεῖον.
30 But God raised him from the dead.
Ὁ δὲ ˚Θεὸς ἤγειρεν αὐτὸν ἐκ νεκρῶν·
31 And he was seen for many days by those who came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are his witnesses to the people.
ὃς ὤφθη ἐπὶ ἡμέρας πλείους τοῖς συναναβᾶσιν αὐτῷ ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας εἰς Ἰερουσαλήμ, οἵτινες νῦν εἰσὶ μάρτυρες αὐτοῦ πρὸς τὸν λαόν.
32 And we preach to you good news concerning the promise made to our fathers,
Καὶ ἡμεῖς ὑμᾶς εὐαγγελιζόμεθα τὴν πρὸς τοὺς πατέρας ἐπαγγελίαν γενομένην,
33 that God has fulfilled the same to us, their children, by raising up Jesus, as it is written in the second Psalm: Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.
ὅτι ταύτην ὁ ˚Θεὸς ἐκπεπλήρωκεν τοῖς τέκνοις ἡμῶν, ἀναστήσας ˚Ἰησοῦν, ὡς καὶ ἐν τῷ ψαλμῷ γέγραπται τῷ δευτέρῳ, ‘Υἱός μου εἶ σύ, ἐγὼ σήμερον γεγέννηκά σε.’
34 But that he raised him from the dead, no more to return to corruption, he has spoken thus: I will give you the sure mercies of David.
Ὅτι δὲ ἀνέστησεν αὐτὸν ἐκ νεκρῶν, μηκέτι μέλλοντα ὑποστρέφειν εἰς διαφθοράν, οὕτως εἴρηκεν, ὅτι ‘Δώσω ὑμῖν τὰ ὅσια Δαυὶδ τὰ πιστά.’
35 For which reason he says also in another Psalm: Thou wilt not suffer thy Holy One to see corruption.
Διότι καὶ ἐν ἑτέρῳ λέγει, ‘Οὐ δώσεις τὸν Ὅσιόν σου ἰδεῖν διαφθοράν.’
36 For David, after serving the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep, and was laid with his fathers, and saw corruption.
Δαυὶδ μὲν γὰρ ἰδίᾳ γενεᾷ ὑπηρετήσας τῇ τοῦ ˚Θεοῦ βουλῇ, ἐκοιμήθη καὶ προσετέθη πρὸς τοὺς πατέρας αὐτοῦ, καὶ εἶδεν διαφθοράν.
37 But he whom God raised up did not see corruption.
Ὃν δὲ ὁ ˚Θεὸς ἤγειρεν οὐκ εἶδεν διαφθοράν.
38 Be it known to you, therefore, brethren, that through this man is preached to you the remission of sins:
Γνωστὸν οὖν ἔστω ὑμῖν, ἄνδρες, ἀδελφοί, ὅτι διὰ τούτου, ὑμῖν ἄφεσις ἁμαρτιῶν καταγγέλλεται, καὶ ἀπὸ πάντων ὧν οὐκ ἠδυνήθητε ἐν νόμῳ Μωϋσέως δικαιωθῆναι,
39 and by him, every one that believes is justified from all things, from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses.
ἐν τούτῳ πᾶς ὁ πιστεύων δικαιοῦται.
40 Take heed, therefore, lest that which is spoken in the prophets come upon you:
Βλέπετε οὖν, μὴ ἐπέλθῃ τὸ εἰρημένον ἐν τοῖς προφήταις:
41 Behold, you despisers, and wonder, and perish. For I work a work in your days, a work which you will not believe, though one fully declare it to you.
‘Ἴδετε, οἱ καταφρονηταί, καὶ θαυμάσατε καὶ ἀφανίσθητε, ὅτι ἔργον ἐργάζομαι ἐγὼ ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ὑμῶν, ἔργον ὃ οὐ μὴ πιστεύσητε, ἐάν τις ἐκδιηγῆται ὑμῖν.’”
42 And as they were departing from the synagogue, they were requested to speak these things to them on the next sabbath.
Ἐξιόντων δὲ, αὐτῶν παρεκάλουν εἰς τὸ μεταξὺ Σάββατον λαληθῆναι αὐτοῖς τὰ ῥήματα ταῦτα.
43 Now, after the congregation was dismissed, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who spoke to them, and persuaded them to continue faithful to the grace of God.
Λυθείσης δὲ τῆς συναγωγῆς, ἠκολούθησαν πολλοὶ τῶν Ἰουδαίων καὶ τῶν σεβομένων προσηλύτων τῷ Παύλῳ καὶ τῷ Βαρναβᾷ, οἵτινες προσλαλοῦντες αὐτοῖς, ἔπειθον αὐτοὺς προσμένειν τῇ χάριτι τοῦ ˚Θεοῦ.
44 And on the next sabbath-day, almost the whole city met together to hear the word of God.
Τῷ δὲ ἐρχομένῳ Σαββάτῳ, σχεδὸν πᾶσα ἡ πόλις συνήχθη ἀκοῦσαι τὸν λόγον τοῦ ˚Θεοῦ.
45 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spoke against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and reviling.
Ἰδόντες δὲ οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι τοὺς ὄχλους, ἐπλήσθησαν ζήλου καὶ ἀντέλεγον τοῖς ὑπὸ Παύλου λαλουμένοις βλασφημοῦντες.
46 But Paul and Barnabas, speaking boldly, said: It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken to you first: but since you reject it, and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, lo! we turn to tho Gentiles. (aiōnios g166)
Παρρησιασάμενοί τε, ὁ Παῦλος καὶ ὁ Βαρναβᾶς εἶπαν, “Ὑμῖν ἦν ἀναγκαῖον πρῶτον λαληθῆναι τὸν λόγον τοῦ ˚Θεοῦ. Ἐπειδὴ δὲ ἀπωθεῖσθε αὐτὸν, καὶ οὐκ ἀξίους κρίνετε ἑαυτοὺς τῆς αἰωνίου ζωῆς, ἰδοὺ, στρεφόμεθα εἰς τὰ ἔθνη. (aiōnios g166)
47 For thus has the Lord given us commandment: I have placed thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be for salvation to the most distant part of the earth.
Οὕτως γὰρ ἐντέταλται ἡμῖν ὁ ˚Κύριος, ‘Τέθεικά σε εἰς φῶς ἐθνῶν, τοῦ εἶναί σε εἰς σωτηρίαν ἕως ἐσχάτου τῆς γῆς.’”
48 When the Gentiles heard this they rejoiced, and glorified the word of the Lord; and as many as were determined to obtain eternal life, believed. (aiōnios g166)
Ἀκούοντα δὲ τὰ ἔθνη, ἔχαιρον καὶ ἐδόξαζον τὸν λόγον τοῦ ˚Κυρίου, καὶ ἐπίστευσαν ὅσοι ἦσαν τεταγμένοι εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον. (aiōnios g166)
49 And the word of the Lord was published throughout the whole of that region.
Διεφέρετο δὲ ὁ λόγος τοῦ ˚Κυρίου διʼ ὅλης τῆς χώρας.
50 But the Jews in cited the devout and influential women, and the first men of the city, and raised a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their borders.
Οἱ δὲ Ἰουδαῖοι παρώτρυναν τὰς σεβομένας γυναῖκας τὰς εὐσχήμονας, καὶ τοὺς πρώτους τῆς πόλεως, καὶ ἐπήγειραν διωγμὸν ἐπὶ τὸν Παῦλον καὶ Βαρναβᾶν, καὶ ἐξέβαλον αὐτοὺς ἀπὸ τῶν ὁρίων αὐτῶν.
51 But they shook off the dust from their feet against them, and went to Iconium.
Οἱ δὲ, ἐκτιναξάμενοι τὸν κονιορτὸν τῶν ποδῶν ἐπʼ αὐτοὺς, ἦλθον εἰς Ἰκόνιον.
52 And the disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.
Οἵ τε μαθηταὶ ἐπληροῦντο χαρᾶς καὶ ˚Πνεύματος Ἁγίου.
