Ecclesiastes 10
1 Dead flies cause the oil of the perfumer to send forth an evil odor; [so] doth a little folly outweigh wisdom and honor.
Las moscas muertas pueden hacer que el aceite perfumado huela mal. Del mismo modo, un poco de insensatez supera a la gran sabiduría y al honor.
2 A wise man’s heart is at his right hand; but a fool’s heart at his left.
La mente del sabio elige el lado correcto, pero la mente del insensato va hacia la izquierda.
3 Yea also, when the fool walketh by the way, his understanding faileth him, and he saith to every one [that] he is a fool.
Sólo la forma en que los necios andan por el camino demuestra que no tienen sentido común, dejando en claro a todos su estupidez.
4 If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for gentleness allayeth great offences.
Si tu superior se enfada contigo, no te rindas y te vayas. Si mantienes la calma, incluso los errores graves pueden resolverse.
5 There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, as it were an error which proceedeth from the ruler:
También me di cuenta de que hay otro mal aquí en la tierra: los gobernantes cometen un gran error
6 folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in a low place.
cuando ponen a los tontos en altos cargos, mientras que los que están ampliamente cualificados son puestos en posiciones bajas.
7 I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking like servants upon the earth.
He visto a esclavos montando a caballo, mientras los príncipes caminan por el suelo como esclavos.
8 He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh through a wall, a serpent shall bite him.
Si cavas un pozo, puedes caerte dentro. Si derribas un muro, te puede morder una serpiente.
9 Whoso heweth out stones shall be hurt therewith; [and] he that cleaveth wood is endangered thereby.
Si extraes piedra, puedes lesionarte. Si partes troncos, podrías herirte.
10 If the iron be blunt, and one do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct.
Si tu hacha está desafilada y no la afilas, tienes que usar mucha más fuerza. Conclusión: ser sabio trae buenos resultados.
11 If the serpent bite before it is charmed, then is there no advantage in the charmer.
Si la serpiente muerde al encantador de serpientes antes de ser encantada, ¡no hay beneficio para el encantador de serpientes!
12 The words of a wise man’s mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.
Las palabras sabias son beneficiosas, pero los necios se destruyen a sí mismos con lo que dicen.
13 The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness; and the end of his talk is mischievous madness.
Los insensatos comienzan diciendo tonterías y terminan diciendo tonterías perversas.
14 A fool also multiplieth words: [yet] man knoweth not what shall be; and that which shall be after him, who can tell him?
Los insensatos no paran de hablar, pero nadie sabe lo que va a pasar, así que ¿quién puede decir lo que depara el futuro?
15 The labor of fools wearieth every one of them; for he knoweth not how to go to the city.
El trabajo hace que los insensatos se desgasten tanto que no pueden lograr nada.
16 Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child, and thy princes eat in the morning!
Estás en problemas si el rey de tu país es joven, y si tus líderes están ocupados festejando desde la mañana.
17 Happy art thou, O land, when thy king is the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!
Tienes suerte si tu rey viene de una familia noble, y si tus líderes festejan a la hora apropiada para darse energía, y no para emborracharse.
18 By slothfulness the roof sinketh in; and through idleness of the hands the house leaketh.
La gente perezosa deja que sus techos se derrumben; la gente ociosa no repara sus casas con goteras.
19 A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh glad the life; and money answereth all things.
Una buena comida trae placer; el vino hace la vida agradable; el dinero cubre todas las necesidades.
20 Revile not the king, no, not in thy thought; and revile not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the heavens shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.
No hables mal del rey, ni siquiera en tus pensamientos. No hables mal de los dirigentes, incluso en la intimidad de tu habitación. Un pájaro puede oír lo que dices y salir volando para contarles.
