Numbers 27

1 Then the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph came near. These are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

Alors s’approchèrent les filles de Celofhad, fils de Héfer, fils de Ghilad, fils de Makhir, fils de Manassé, de la descendance de Manassé, fils de Joseph, lesquelles filles avaient nom Mailla, Noa, Hogla, Milca et Tirça;

2 They stood before Moses, before Eleazar the priest, and before the princes and all the congregation, at the door of the Tent of Meeting, saying,

elles se présentèrent devant Moïse, devant Eléazar le pontife, devant les phylarques et toute la communauté, à l’entrée de la tente d’assignation, disant:

3 “Our father died in the wilderness. He was not among the company of those who gathered themselves together against the LORD in the company of Korah, but he died in his own sin. He had no sons.

"Notre père est mort dans le désert. Toutefois, il ne faisait point partie de cette faction liguée contre le Seigneur, de la faction de Coré: c’est pour son péché qu’il est mort, et il n’avait point de fils.

4 Why should the name of our father be taken away from among his family, because he had no son? Give to us a possession among the brothers of our father.”

Faut-il que le nom de notre père disparaisse du milieu de sa famille, parce qu’il n’a pas laissé de fils? Donne-nous une propriété parmi les frères de notre père!"

5 Moses brought their cause before the LORD.

Moïse déféra leur cause à l’Éternel.

6 The LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

Et l’Éternel parla ainsi à Moïse:

7 “The daughters of Zelophehad speak right. You shall surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father’s brothers. You shall cause the inheritance of their father to pass to them.

"Les filles de Celofhad ont raison. Tu dois leur accorder un droit d’hérédité parmi les frères de leur père, et leur transmettre l’héritage de leur père.

8 You shall speak to the children of Israel, saying, ‘If a man dies, and has no son, then you shall cause his inheritance to pass to his daughter.

Et tu parleras en ces termes aux enfants d’Israël: Si un homme meurt sans laisser de fils, vous ferez passer son héritage à sa fille.

9 If he has no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brothers.

S’Il n’a pas de fille, vous donnerez son héritage à ses frères.

10 If he has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father’s brothers.

S’Il n’a pas de frères, vous donnerez son héritage aux frères de son père.

11 If his father has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his kinsman who is next to him of his family, and he shall possess it. This shall be a statute and ordinance for the children of Israel, as the LORD commanded Moses.’”

Et si son père n’a pas laissé de frères, vous donnerez son héritage au plus proche parent qu’il aura dans sa famille, lequel en deviendra possesseur. Ce sera pour les enfants d’Israël une règle de droit, ainsi que l’Éternel l’a prescrit à Moïse."

12 The LORD said to Moses, “Go up into this mountain of Abarim, and see the land which I have given to the children of Israel.

L’Éternel dit à Moïse: "Monte sur cette hauteur des Abarîm, pour contempler le pays que j’ai donné aux enfants d’Israël.

13 When you have seen it, you also shall be gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother was gathered;

Quand tu l’auras contemplé, tu iras rejoindre tes pères, toi aussi, comme l’a fait Aaron ton frère;

14 because in the strife of the congregation, you rebelled against my word in the wilderness of Zin, to honor me as holy at the waters before their eyes.” (These are the waters of Meribah of Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.)

parce que vous avez contrevenu à ma parole dans le désert de Cîn, lors de la querelle soulevée par la communauté, au lieu de faire éclater devant eux ma sainteté par les eaux." Ce sont les eaux de Meribath-Kadêch, au désert de Cîn.

15 Moses spoke to the LORD, saying,

Alors Moïse parla à l’Éternel en ces termes:

16 “Let the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation,

"Que l’Éternel, le Dieu des esprits de toute chair, institue un chef sur cette communauté,

17 who may go out before them, and who may come in before them, and who may lead them out, and who may bring them in, that the congregation of the LORD may not be as sheep which have no shepherd.”

qui marche sans cesse à leur tête et qui dirige tous leurs mouvements, afin que la communauté de l’Éternel ne soit pas comme un troupeau sans pasteur."

18 The LORD said to Moses, “Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him.

Et l’Éternel dit à Moïse: "Fais approcher de toi Josué, fils de Noun, homme animé de mon esprit, et impose ta main sur lui.

19 Set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation; and commission him in their sight.

Tu le mettras en présence d’Eléazar le pontife et de toute la communauté, et lui donneras ses instructions devant eux.

20 You shall give authority to him, that all the congregation of the children of Israel may obey.

Tu lui communiqueras une partie de ta majesté, afin que toute l’assemblée des enfants d’Israël lui obéisse.

21 He shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him by the judgment of the Urim before the LORD. At his word they shall go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he and all the children of Israel with him, even all the congregation.”

II devra se présenter devant le pontife Eléazar, qui interrogera pour lui l’oracle des Ourîm devant le Seigneur: c’est à sa voix qu’ils partiront, à sa voix qu’ils rentreront, lui-même aussi bien que tous les enfants d’Israël et toute la communauté."

22 Moses did as the LORD commanded him. He took Joshua, and set him before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation.

Moïse fit comme l’Éternel lui avait prescrit: il prit Josué, le mit en présence du pontife Eléazar et de toute la communauté,

23 He laid his hands on him and commissioned him, as the LORD spoke by Moses.

lui imposa les mains et lui donna ses instructions, comme l’Éternel l’avait dit par l’organe de Moïse.
