Joshua 8
1 The LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid, and do not be dismayed. Take all the warriors with you, and arise, go up to Ai. Behold, I have given into your hand the king of Ai, with his people, his city, and his land.
পরে সদাপ্রভু যিহোশূয়কে বললেন, “ভয় পেয়ো না; হতাশ হোয়ো না। সমগ্র সৈন্যদল সাথে নাও, এবং উঠে গিয়ে অয় নগর আক্রমণ করো। কারণ অয়ের রাজা, তার প্রজা, তার নগর ও তার দেশকে আমি তোমার হাতে সমর্পণ করেছি।
2 You shall do to Ai and her king as you did to Jericho and her king, except you shall take its goods and its livestock for yourselves. Set an ambush for the city behind it.”
যিরীহো ও তার রাজার প্রতি তুমি যেমন করেছিলে, অয় ও তার রাজার প্রতিও তুমি তেমনই করবে, শুধু ব্যতিক্রম হবে এই যে তোমরা তাদের লুন্ঠিত জিনিসপত্র ও গৃহপালিত পশুপাল নিজেদের জন্য নিতে পারবে। নগরের পিছন দিকে ওৎ পেতে লুকিয়ে থাকো।”
3 So Joshua arose, with all the warriors, to go up to Ai. Joshua chose thirty thousand men, the mighty men of valor, and sent them out by night.
অতএব যিহোশূয় ও সমগ্র সৈন্যদল অয় আক্রমণ করার জন্য এগিয়ে গেলেন। তাঁর সেরা যোদ্ধাদের মধ্যে থেকে তিনি 30,000 জনকে মনোনীত করলেন এবং রাতের বেলায় তাদের এই আদেশ দিয়ে
4 He commanded them, saying, “Behold, you shall lie in ambush against the city, behind the city. Do not go very far from the city, but all of you be ready.
পাঠিয়ে দিলেন: “ভালো করে শোনো। নগরের পিছন দিকে তোমাদের ওৎ পেতে লুকিয়ে থাকতে হবে। সেখান থেকে বেশি দূরে যাবে না। তোমরা সবাই সজাগ থেকো।
5 I and all the people who are with me will approach the city. It shall happen, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them.
আমি ও আমার সঙ্গী লোকজন, আমরা সবাই নগরের দিকে এগিয়ে যাব এবং লোকেরা যখন আগের মতো আমাদের বিরুদ্ধে এগিয়ে আসবে, তখন আমরা তাদের কাছ থেকে পালিয়ে যাব।
6 They will come out after us until we have drawn them away from the city; for they will say, ‘They flee before us, like the first time.’ So we will flee before them,
আমরা তাদের নগর থেকে দূরে প্রলুব্ধ করে নিয়ে না যাওয়া পর্যন্ত তারা আমাদের পশ্চাদ্ধাবন করে যাবে, কারণ তারা বলবে, ‘আগের মতোই তারা আমাদের কাছ থেকে পালিয়ে যাচ্ছে।’ তাই আমরা যখন তাদের কাছ থেকে পালাব,
7 and you shall rise up from the ambush, and take possession of the city; for the LORD your God will deliver it into your hand.
তোমরা তখন গুপ্ত স্থান থেকে উঠে এসে নগরটি দখল করবে। তোমাদের ঈশ্বর সদাপ্রভু সেটি তোমাদের হাতে সঁপে দেবেন।
8 It shall be, when you have seized the city, that you shall set the city on fire. You shall do this according to the LORD’s word. Behold, I have commanded you.”
তোমরা নগরের দখল নিয়ে, তাতে আগুন ধরিয়ে দিয়ো। সদাপ্রভু যে আদেশ দিয়েছেন, তা পালন কোরো। দেখো; আমি তোমাদের আদেশ দিলাম।”
9 Joshua sent them out; and they went to set up the ambush, and stayed between Bethel and Ai on the west side of Ai; but Joshua stayed among the people that night.
পরে যিহোশূয় তাদের পাঠিয়ে দিলেন, এবং তারা ওৎ পেতে থাকার জন্য নিরূপিত স্থানে গেল এবং অয়ের পশ্চিমদিকে, বেথেল ও অয়ের মাঝখানে অপেক্ষা করতে থাকল—কিন্তু যিহোশূয় সমস্ত রাত লোকদের সঙ্গেই কাটালেন।
10 Joshua rose up early in the morning, mustered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai.
পরদিন ভোরবেলায় যিহোশূয় তাঁর সৈন্যদল জড়ো করলেন, এবং তিনি ও ইস্রায়েলের নেতারা সৈন্যদলের সামনের সারিতে থেকে অয়ের দিকে কুচকাওয়াজ করে এগিয়ে গেলেন।
11 All the people, even the men of war who were with him, went up and came near, and came before the city and encamped on the north side of Ai. Now there was a valley between him and Ai.
তাঁর সঙ্গে থাকা সমগ্র সৈন্যদল কুচকাওয়াজ করে নগরের দিকে এগিয়ে গেল ও সেটির সামনে পৌঁছে গেল। অয়ের উত্তর দিকে তারা শিবির স্থাপন করল, এবং তাদের ও নগরের মাঝখানে উপত্যকা ছিল।
12 He took about five thousand men, and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of the city.
যিহোশূয় প্রায় 5,000 লোক নিয়ে নগরের পশ্চিমদিকে বেথেল ও অয়ের মাঝখানে তাদের গোপনে লুকিয়ে রাখলেন।
13 So they set the people, even all the army who was on the north of the city, and their ambush on the west of the city; and Joshua went that night into the middle of the valley.
অতএব সৈন্যরা নিজেদের অবস্থান নিল—একদিকে প্রধান শিবিরটি নগরের উত্তর দিকে এবং ওৎ পেতে লুকিয়ে থাকা সৈন্যরা সেটির পশ্চিমদিকে ছিল। সেরাতে যিহোশূয় উপত্যকায় চলে গেলেন।
14 When the king of Ai saw it, they hurried and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at the time appointed, before the Arabah; but he did not know that there was an ambush against him behind the city.
অয়ের রাজা যখন তা দেখলেন, তিনি ও নগরের সব লোকজন তখন ভোরবেলায় অরাবার দিকে নজর না দিয়ে তাড়াহুড়ো করে নির্দিষ্ট এক স্থানে ইস্রায়েলের সঙ্গে যুদ্ধ করার জন্য বেরিয়ে পড়লেন। কিন্তু তিনি জানতেন না যে নগরের পিছন দিকে তাঁর বিরুদ্ধে একদল সৈন্য ওৎ পেতে লুকিয়ে আছে।
15 Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.
যিহোশূয় ও সমগ্র ইস্রায়েল তাদের সামনে থেকে স্বেচ্ছায় পিছু হটলেন, এবং তাঁরা মরুভূমির দিকে পালিয়ে গেলেন।
16 All the people who were in the city were called together to pursue after them. They pursued Joshua, and were drawn away from the city.
অয়ের সব লোককে তাঁদের পশ্চাদ্ধাবন করার জন্য ডাকা হল, এবং তারা যিহোশূয়ের পশ্চাদ্ধাবন করল ও প্রলুব্ধ হয়ে নগর থেকে দূরে চলে গেল।
17 There was not a man left in Ai or Bethel who did not go out after Israel. They left the city open, and pursued Israel.
অয় বা বেথেলে এমন একজন লোকও অবশিষ্ট ছিল না যে ইস্রায়েলের পশ্চাদ্ধাবন করেনি। তারা নগর উন্মুক্ত রেখে ইস্রায়েলের পশ্চাদ্ধাবন করল।
18 The LORD said to Joshua, “Stretch out the javelin that is in your hand toward Ai, for I will give it into your hand.” Joshua stretched out the javelin that was in his hand toward the city.
তখন সদাপ্রভু যিহোশূয়কে বললেন, “তোমার হাতে যে বর্শাটি আছে, তা অয়ের দিকে তাক করে ধরো, কারণ তোমার হাতে আমি এই নগরটি সমর্পণ করব।” অতএব যিহোশূয় তাঁর হাতে থাকা বর্শাটি অয়ের দিকে তাক করে ধরলেন।
19 The ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand and entered into the city and took it. They hurried and set the city on fire.
তিনি তা করামাত্রই, ওৎ পেতে লুকিয়ে থাকা সৈন্যরা তাড়াতাড়ি তাদের অবস্থান থেকে উঠে এসে সামনের দিকে দৌড়ে গেল। তারা নগরে প্রবেশ করে তার দখল নিল এবং তাড়াতাড়ি তাতে আগুন ধরিয়ে দিল।
20 When the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way. The people who fled to the wilderness turned back on the pursuers.
অয়ের লোকেরা পিছনে ফিরে তাকাল এবং দেখল নগরের ধোঁয়া আকাশে উঠে যাচ্ছে, কিন্তু তারা কোনো দিকে পালিয়ে যাওয়ার সুযোগ পায়নি; যে ইস্রায়েলীরা মরুপ্রান্তরের দিকে পালিয়ে যাচ্ছিল, তারা তাদের পশ্চাদ্ধাবনকারীদের বিরুদ্ধে ঘুরে দাঁড়াল।
21 When Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned back and killed the men of Ai.
কারণ যিহোশূয় ও সমগ্র ইস্রায়েল যখন দেখলেন যে, ওৎ পেতে লুকিয়ে থাকা সৈন্যরা নগর দখল করে নিয়েছে এবং সেখান থেকে ধোঁয়া উপরে উঠে যাচ্ছে, তখন তাঁরা পিছনে ঘুরে অয়ের লোকদের আক্রমণ করলেন।
22 The others came out of the city against them, so they were in the middle of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side. They struck them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.
ওৎ পেতে লুকিয়ে থাকা সৈন্যরাও নগর থেকে তাদের বিরুদ্ধে বেরিয়ে এল, তাতে তারা মাঝখানে পড়ে গেল, এবং তাদের দুই দিকেই ইস্রায়েলীরা মোতায়েন ছিল। ইস্রায়েল তাদের কচুকাটা করল, কাউকে অবশিষ্ট রাখল না বা পালিয়েও যেতে দিল না।
23 They captured the king of Ai alive, and brought him to Joshua.
কিন্তু তারা অয়ের রাজাকে জীবিত অবস্থায় ধরে তাঁকে যিহোশূয়ের কাছে নিয়ে এল।
24 When Israel had finished killing all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness in which they pursued them, and they had all fallen by the edge of the sword until they were consumed, all Israel returned to Ai and struck it with the edge of the sword.
যারা ইস্রায়েলের পশ্চাদ্ধাবন করছিল অয়ের সেইসব লোকজনকে সেই ক্ষেতে ও মরুপ্রান্তরে হত্যা করার, এবং তাদের প্রত্যেককে তরোয়াল দিয়ে কচুকাটা করার পর, ইস্রায়েলীরা সবাই অয়ে ফিরে এল এবং সেখানে যারা ছিল, তাদেরও হত্যা করল।
25 All that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the people of Ai.
অয়ের সব লোকজন 12,000 নারী-পুরুষ সেদিন নিহত হল।
26 For Joshua did not draw back his hand, with which he stretched out the javelin, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.
কারণ যিহোশূয় অয়ে বসবাসকারী লোকজনকে ধ্বংস না করা পর্যন্ত তাঁর সেই হাতটি পিছনে টেনে আনেননি, যেটিতে বর্শা ধরা ছিল।
27 Israel took for themselves only the livestock and the goods of that city, according to the LORD’s word which he commanded Joshua.
কিন্তু ইস্রায়েল নিজেদের জন্য সেই নগরের গৃহপালিত পশুপাল ও লুন্ঠিত জিনিসপত্র বয়ে নিয়ে গেল, যেমনটি সদাপ্রভু যিহোশূয়কে নির্দেশ দিয়েছিলেন।
28 So Joshua burned Ai and made it a heap forever, even a desolation, to this day.
অতএব যিহোশূয় অয় নগরটি পুড়িয়ে দিলেন এবং তা এক চিরস্থায়ী ধ্বংসস্তূপে, এক নির্জন স্থানে পরিণত করলেন, যা আজও পর্যন্ত তাই হয়ে আছে।
29 He hanged the king of Ai on a tree until the evening. At sundown, Joshua commanded, and they took his body down from the tree and threw it at the entrance of the gate of the city, and raised a great heap of stones on it that remains to this day.
অয়ের রাজাকে তিনি শূলে চড়ালেন এবং সন্ধ্যা পর্যন্ত তাঁর মৃতদেহ সেখানেই রেখে দিলেন। সূর্যাস্তের সময়, যিহোশূয় লোকজনকে তাঁর শবটি শূল থেকে নামিয়ে নগর-দুয়ারের প্রবেশস্থানে ছুঁড়ে ফেলার আদেশ দিলেন। আর তারা সেটির উপর বিশাল পাথরের এক স্তূপ তৈরি করল, যা আজও পর্যন্ত বজায় আছে।
30 Then Joshua built an altar to the LORD, the God of Israel, on Mount Ebal,
পরে যিহোশূয় এবল পর্বতে ইস্রায়েলের ঈশ্বর সদাপ্রভুর উদ্দেশে এক যজ্ঞবেদি নির্মাণ করলেন।
31 as Moses the servant of the LORD commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses: an altar of uncut stones, on which no one had lifted up any iron. They offered burnt offerings on it to the LORD and sacrificed peace offerings.
সদাপ্রভুর দাস মোশি ইস্রায়েলীদের যেমন আদেশ দিয়েছিলেন সেই আদেশানুসারে তিনি মোশির বিধানপুস্তকের লিখিত বয়ান অনুযায়ী তা নির্মাণ করলেন—সেই বেদি অকর্তিত পাথরে তৈরি হল, যার উপরে কোনো লোহার যন্ত্র ব্যবহৃত হয়নি। তার উপরে তারা সদাপ্রভুর উদ্দেশে হোমবলি ও মঙ্গলার্থক বলি উৎসর্গ করল।
32 He wrote there on the stones a copy of Moses’ law, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel.
সেখানে, ইস্রায়েলীদের উপস্থিতিতে, যিহোশূয় একটি পাথরের ফলকে মোশির বিধানের অনুলিপি লিখে দিলেন।
33 All Israel, with their elders, officers, and judges, stood on both sides of the ark before the Levitical priests, who carried the ark of the LORD’s covenant, the foreigner as well as the native; half of them in front of Mount Gerizim, and half of them in front of Mount Ebal, as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded at the first, that they should bless the people of Israel.
ইস্রায়েলীরা সবাই, তাদের প্রাচীন, কর্মকর্তা ও বিচারকদের সঙ্গে মিলিতভাবে, সদাপ্রভুর নিয়ম-সিন্দুক বহনকারী লেবীয় যাজকদের দিকে মুখ করে সদাপ্রভুর সেই নিয়ম-সিন্দুকের দুই পাশে দাঁড়িয়েছিল। তাদের মধ্যে বসবাসকারী বিদেশিরাও সেখানে ছিল এবং স্বদেশি লোকজনরাও ছিল। ইস্রায়েলী লোকদের আশীর্বাদ দান সংক্রান্ত নির্দেশদান করার সময় সদাপ্রভুর দাস মোশি আগেই তাদের যেমন আদেশ দিয়েছিলেন, সেই আদেশানুসারে অর্ধেক লোক গরিষীম পর্বতের সামনে ও অর্ধেক লোক এবল পর্বতের সামনে এসে দাঁড়াল।
34 Afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessing and the curse, according to all that is written in the book of the law.
পরে, বিধানপুস্তকে ঠিক যেমনটি লেখা আছে, সেই অনুসারে যিহোশূয় বিধানের সব কথা—আশীর্বাদ ও অভিশাপের কথা—পাঠ করলেন।
35 There was not a word of all that Moses commanded which Joshua did not read before all the assembly of Israel, with the women, the little ones, and the foreigners who were among them.
মোশির দেওয়া আদেশের এমন কোনও কথা বাকি ছিল না যা যিহোশূয় নারী ও শিশুসহ সমগ্র ইস্রায়েলী সমাজ এবং তাদের মধ্যে বসবাসকারী সব বিদেশির কাছে পাঠ করেননি।
