Acts 24
1 After five days, the high priest, Ananias, came down with certain elders and an orator, one Tertullus. They informed the governor against Paul.
Cinq jours après, arriva le souverain sacrificateur Ananias avec les anciens et un avocat nommé Tertulle. Ils portèrent plainte au gouverneur contre Paul.
2 When he was called, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying, “Seeing that by you we enjoy much peace, and that prosperity is coming to this nation by your foresight,
Celui-ci ayant été appelé, Tertulle se mit à l'accuser en ces termes:
3 we accept it in all ways and in all places, most excellent Felix, with all thankfulness.
«Très excellent Félix, nous reconnaissons en toute rencontre et en tout lieu, avec une entière gratitude, que c'est à toi et aux bonnes mesures que ta sollicitude t'a dictées pour cette nation, que nous devons la paix profonde dont nous jouissons.
4 But that I do not delay you, I entreat you to bear with us and hear a few words.
Mais je ne veux pas t'arrêter plus longtemps, et je te prie de nous prêter, dans ta clémence, quelques moments d'attention.
5 For we have found this man to be a plague, an instigator of insurrections among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes.
Le fait est qu'ayant trouvé cet homme, nous l'avons arrêté, parce que c'est une peste, un homme qui va semant la discorde parmi tous les Juifs répandus dans l'empire, un chef de la secte des Nazaréens;
6 He even tried to profane the temple, and we arrested him.
il a même tenté de profaner le temple. [Nous voulions le juger selon notre loi; ]
[mais le tribun Lysias, étant survenu, l’a violemment arraché de nos mains, ]
8 By examining him yourself you may ascertain all these things of which we accuse him.”
[en donnant l’ordre à ses accusateurs de se rendre vers toi.] Tu pourras toi-même, en l'interrogeant, t’assurer par ses propres aveux, de tout ce que nous avançons à sa charge»
9 The Jews also joined in the attack, affirming that these things were so.
Les Juifs se joignirent à cette accusation, prétendant que c'était l’exacte vérité.
10 When the governor had beckoned to him to speak, Paul answered, “Because I know that you have been a judge of this nation for many years, I cheerfully make my defense,
Mais Paul, à qui le gouverneur fit signe de parler, répondit: «C'est avec confiance que je prends la parole pour me justifier, sachant que depuis plusieurs années tu gouvernes cette nation.
11 seeing that you can verify that it is not more than twelve days since I went up to worship at Jerusalem.
Tu peux rassurer, qu'il n'y a pas plus de douze jours que je suis monté à Jérusalem pour adorer;
12 In the temple they did not find me disputing with anyone or stirring up a crowd, either in the synagogues or in the city.
et l’on ne m'a vu parler à personne dans le temple, ni ameuter la foule, soit dans les synagogues, soit dans la ville.
13 Nor can they prove to you the things of which they now accuse me.
Ils ne peuvent pas trouver ce dont ils m'accusent maintenant.
14 But this I confess to you, that according to the Way, which they call a sect, so I serve the God of our fathers, believing all things which are according to the law, and which are written in the prophets;
Je te confesse que je sers le Dieu de mes pères selon la voie qu'ils appellent une secte, en croyant néanmoins toutes les choses qui sont écrites dans la Loi et dans les Prophètes,
15 having hope toward God, which these also themselves look for, that there will be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.
en ayant cette espérance en Dieu, comme ils l'ont eux-mêmes, qu'il y aura une résurrection tant des justes que des injustes:
16 In this I also practice always having a conscience void of offense toward God and men.
dans cette conviction, je m'efforce aussi moi-même d'avoir constamment une conscience irréprochable devant Dieu et devant les hommes.
17 Now after some years, I came to bring gifts for the needy to my nation, and offerings;
Après plusieurs années d’absence, je suis venu faire des aumônes à ma nation, et présenter des offrandes.
18 amid which certain Jews from Asia found me purified in the temple, not with a mob, nor with turmoil.
C'est dans ces circonstances que des Juifs venus d'Asie m'ont trouvé, purifié, dans le temple, sans attroupement et sans tumulte.
19 They ought to have been here before you and to make accusation if they had anything against me.
C'était à eux de paraître en ta présence et de m'accuser, s'ils ont quelque plainte à porter contre moi;
20 Or else let these men themselves say what injustice they found in me when I stood before the council,
ou bien, que ceux-ci disent de quel crime ils m'ont trouvé coupable, lorsque j'ai paru devant le sanhédrin,
21 unless it is for this one thing that I cried standing among them, ‘Concerning the resurrection of the dead I am being judged before you today!’”
à moins qu'ils ne me fassent un crime de cette seule parole, que j'ai prononcée lors de ma comparution devant eux: «C'est à cause de la résurrection des morts que vous me mettez aujourd'hui en jugement.»
22 But Felix, having more exact knowledge concerning the Way, deferred them, saying, “When Lysias, the commanding officer, comes down, I will decide your case.”
Mais Félix, qui connaissait assez bien ce qui se rapporte à cette croyance, les remit à un autre jour, disant: «Quand le tribun. Lysias sera venu, j'examinerai à fond votre affaire.»
23 He ordered the centurion that Paul should be kept in custody and should have some privileges, and not to forbid any of his friends to serve him or to visit him.
Puis il commanda au centurion de tenir Paul en prison, d'avoir des égards pour lui, et de n'empêcher aucun des siens de lui rendre des services.
24 After some days, Felix came with Drusilla his wife, who was a Jewess, and sent for Paul and heard him concerning the faith in Christ Jesus.
Quelques jours après, Félix étant venu avec Drusille sa femme, qui était Juive, fit chercher Paul et l'entendit sur la foi en Christ.
25 As he reasoned about righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix was terrified, and answered, “Go your way for this time, and when it is convenient for me, I will summon you.”
Mais, comme Paul parlait de justice, de tempérance et de jugement à venir, Félix, effrayé, lui dit: «Pour le moment, va-t'en; à la première occasion, je te rappellerai.»
26 Meanwhile, he also hoped that money would be given to him by Paul, that he might release him. Therefore also he sent for him more often and talked with him.
Il espérait en même temps que Paul lui donnerait de l'argent: aussi le faisait-il venir assez fréquemment pour s'entretenir avec lui.
27 But when two years were fulfilled, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus, and desiring to gain favor with the Jews, Felix left Paul in bonds.
Deux ans s'étant écoulés, Félix eut pour successeur Porcius Festus, et, dans son désir de se rendre agréable aux Juifs, il laissa Paul en prison.
