1 Samuel 14

1 Now it happened on a day that Jonathan the son of Saul said to the young man who bore his armor, “Come! Let’s go over to the Philistines’ garrison that is on the other side.” But he did not tell his father.

একদিন শৌলের ছেলে যোনাথন তাঁর অস্ত্র বহনকারী যুবক ছেলেটিকে বললেন, “এসো, অন্যদিকে অবস্থিত ফিলিস্তিনীদের সৈন্যশিবিরে যাওয়া যাক।” কিন্তু একথা তিনি তাঁর বাবাকে বলেননি।

2 Saul stayed in the uttermost part of Gibeah under the pomegranate tree which is in Migron; and the people who were with him were about six hundred men,

শৌল গিবিয়ার প্রান্তদেশে মিগ্রোণে একটি ডালিম গাছের তলায় বসেছিলেন। তাঁর সঙ্গে ছিল প্রায় 600 জন,

3 including Ahijah the son of Ahitub, Ichabod’s brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli the priest of the LORD in Shiloh, wearing an ephod. The people did not know that Jonathan was gone.

তাদের মধ্যে ছিলেন অহিয়, যাঁর পরনে ছিল এফোদ। তিনি ছিলেন অহীটূবের ছেলে, অহীটূব ছিলেন ঈখাবোদের ভাই, ঈখাবোদ ছিলেন পীনহসের ছেলে, এবং পীনহস ছিলেন সেই এলির ছেলে, যিনি শীলোতে সদাপ্রভুর যাজক ছিলেন। কেউই বুঝতে পারেনি যে যোনাথন বের হয়ে গিয়েছেন।

4 Between the passes, by which Jonathan sought to go over to the Philistines’ garrison, there was a rocky crag on the one side and a rocky crag on the other side; and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh.

যে গিরিপথটি পেরিয়ে যোনাথন ফিলিস্তিনীদের সৈন্যশিবিরে পৌঁছাতে চেয়েছিলেন সেটির দুধারেই একটি করে খাড়া বাঁধ ছিল; একটির নাম বোৎসেস ও অন্যটির নাম সেনি।

5 The one crag rose up on the north in front of Michmash, and the other on the south in front of Geba.

একটি খাড়া বাঁধ উত্তর দিকে মিক্‌মসের মুখোমুখি ছিল, অন্যটি ছিল দক্ষিণ দিকে গেবার মুখোমুখি।

6 Jonathan said to the young man who bore his armor, “Come! Let’s go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised. It may be that the LORD will work for us, for there is no restraint on the LORD to save by many or by few.”

যোনাথন তাঁর অস্ত্র বহনকারী যুবকটিকে বললেন, “চলো, আমরা ইত্যবসরে সেইসব লোকজনের ঘাঁটিতে যাই, যারা নেহাতই অধার্মিক। হয়তো সদাপ্রভু আমাদের হয়ে কাজ করবেন। বেশি লোক দিয়েই হোক বা অল্প লোক দিয়েই হোক, ঈশ্বর উদ্ধার করবেনই, কোনো কিছুই তাঁকে আটকাতে পারবে না।”

7 His armor bearer said to him, “Do all that is in your heart. Go, and behold, I am with you according to your heart.”

তাঁর অস্ত্র বহনকারী বলল, “আপনার যা মনে হয় তাই করুন। এগিয়ে যান, আমি মনেপ্রাণে আপনার সঙ্গে সঙ্গে আছি।”

8 Then Jonathan said, “Behold, we will pass over to the men, and we will reveal ourselves to them.

যোনাথন বললেন, “তবে, এসো; আমরা পার হয়ে ওদের দিকে যাব এবং ওরাও আমাদের দেখুক।

9 If they say this to us, ‘Wait until we come to you!’ then we will stand still in our place and will not go up to them.

যদি ওরা আমাদের বলে, ‘আমরা তোমাদের কাছে না আসা পর্যন্ত ওখানে অপেক্ষা করো,’ তবে আমরা যেখানে আছি সেখানেই থাকব ও ওদের কাছে উঠে যাব না।

10 But if they say this, ‘Come up to us!’ then we will go up, for the LORD has delivered them into our hand. This shall be the sign to us.”

কিন্তু ওরা যদি বলে, ‘আমাদের কাছে উঠে এসে লড়ো,’ তবে আমরা উপরে উঠে যাব, কারণ সেটিই আমাদের কাছে এই চিহ্ন হয়ে যাবে যে সদাপ্রভু ওদের আমাদের হাতে তুলে দিয়েছেন।”

11 Both of them revealed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines; and the Philistines said, “Behold, the Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they had hidden themselves!”

অতএব তাঁরা দুজনেই ফিলিস্তিনী সেনা-ঘাঁটির সামনে গিয়ে নিজেদের দর্শন দিলেন। ফিলিস্তিনীরা বলল, “ওই দেখো, গর্তে লুকিয়ে থাকা হিব্রুরা হামাগুড়ি দিয়ে বের হয়ে আসছে।”

12 The men of the garrison answered Jonathan and his armor bearer, and said, “Come up to us, and we will show you something!” Jonathan said to his armor bearer, “Come up after me, for the LORD has delivered them into the hand of Israel.”

সেনা-ঘাঁটির লোকজন চিৎকার করে যোনাথন ও তাঁর অস্ত্র-বহনকারীকে বলল, “আমাদের কাছে উঠে এসে লড়ো, আমরা তোমাদের উচিত শিক্ষা দেব।” অতএব যোনাথন তাঁর অস্ত্র-বহনকারীকে বললেন, “আমার পিছু পিছু উপরে উঠে এসো; সদাপ্রভু ইস্রায়েলের হাতে ওদের তুলে দিয়েছেন।”

13 Jonathan climbed up on his hands and on his feet, and his armor bearer after him, and they fell before Jonathan; and his armor bearer killed them after him.

যোনাথন তাঁর হাত পা ব্যবহার করে উপরে উঠে গেলেন, এবং তাঁর অস্ত্র বহনকারী ছিল ঠিক তাঁর পিছনেই। ফিলিস্তিনীরা যোনাথনের সামনে পড়ে যাচ্ছিল, ও তাঁর অস্ত্র-বহনকারীও তাঁকে অনুসরণ করে তাদের হত্যা করে যাচ্ছিল।

14 That first slaughter, which Jonathan and his armor bearer made, was about twenty men, within as it were half a furrow’s length in an acre of land.

প্রথম আক্রমণেই যোনাথন ও তাঁর অস্ত্র বহনকারী লোকটি কমবেশি অর্ধেক একর এলাকা জুড়ে প্রায় কুড়ি জনকে হত্যা করলেন।

15 There was a trembling in the camp, in the field, and among all the people; the garrison and the raiders also trembled; and the earth quaked, so there was an exceedingly great trembling.

তখন সমগ্র সৈন্যদলে—যারা শিবিরে ও যুদ্ধক্ষেত্রে ছিল, এবং যারা সেনা-ঘাঁটিতে ছিল ও যারা হামলা চালাচ্ছিল, তাদের মধ্যেও—আতঙ্ক ছেয়ে গেল, এবং ভূমিকম্প হল। সেই আতঙ্ক ঈশ্বরই পাঠালেন।

16 The watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked; and behold, the multitude melted away and scattered.

বিন্যামীনের গিবিয়ায় শৌলের প্রহরীরা দেখতে পেয়েছিল যে সৈন্যদল চর্তুদিকে কমে যাচ্ছে।

17 Then Saul said to the people who were with him, “Count now, and see who is missing from us.” When they had counted, behold, Jonathan and his armor bearer were not there.

তখন শৌল তাঁর সঙ্গে থাকা লোকজনকে বললেন, “সৈন্যদের জমায়েত করে গুনে দেখো, কে কে আমাদের ছেড়ে গিয়েছে।” যখন তারা এমনটি করল, দেখা গেল যোনাথন ও তাঁর অস্ত্র বহনকারী সেখানে অনুপস্থিত।

18 Saul said to Ahijah, “Bring God’s ark here.” For God’s ark was with the children of Israel at that time.

শৌল অহিয়কে বললেন, “ঈশ্বরের নিয়ম-সিন্দুকটি এখানে আনুন।” (সেই সময় সেটি ইস্রায়েলীদের সঙ্গেই ছিল)

19 While Saul talked to the priest, the tumult that was in the camp of the Philistines went on and increased; and Saul said to the priest, “Withdraw your hand!”

শৌল যখন যাজকের সঙ্গে কথা বলছিলেন, ফিলিস্তিনী-শিবিরে তখন ক্রমাগত হৈ হট্টগোল বেড়েই চলেছিল। তাই শৌল যাজককে বললেন, “আপনার হাত সরিয়ে নিন।”

20 Saul and all the people who were with him were gathered together, and came to the battle; and behold, they were all striking each other with their swords in very great confusion.

পরে শৌল ও তাঁর সব লোকজন একত্রিত হয়ে যুদ্ধে গেলেন। তাঁরা দেখেছিলেন যে ফিলিস্তিনীরা পুরোপুরি এলোমেলো হয়ে গিয়ে নিজেদেরই তরোয়াল দিয়ে পরস্পরকে আঘাত হেনে চলেছে।

21 Now the Hebrews who were with the Philistines before and who went up with them into the camp from all around, even they also turned to be with the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan.

যেসব হিব্রু লোকজন ইতিপূর্বে ফিলিস্তিনীদের সঙ্গে ছিল ও তাদের সাথে মিলে তাদের সৈন্যশিবিরে চলে গিয়েছিল, তারাও সেইসব ইস্রায়েলীর কাছে ফিরে এসেছিল, যারা শৌল ও যোনাথনের সঙ্গে ছিল।

22 Likewise all the men of Israel who had hidden themselves in the hill country of Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, even they also followed hard after them in the battle.

ইফ্রয়িমের পার্বত্য এলাকায় লুকিয়ে থাকা ইস্রায়েলীরা যখন শুনেছিল যে ফিলিস্তিনীরা পালিয়ে যাচ্ছে, তখন তারাও যুদ্ধে যোগ দিয়ে প্রচণ্ড বেগে তাদের পশ্চাদ্ধাবন করল।

23 So the LORD saved Israel that day; and the battle passed over by Beth Aven.

অতএব সেদিন সদাপ্রভু ইস্রায়েলকে রক্ষা করলেন, এবং যুদ্ধ বেথ-আবন পার করে ছড়িয়ে পড়েছিল।

24 The men of Israel were distressed that day; for Saul had adjured the people, saying, “Cursed is the man who eats any food until it is evening, and I am avenged of my enemies.” So none of the people tasted food.

সেদিন ইস্রায়েলীরা গুরুতর অসুবিধায় পড়েছিল, কারণ শৌল এই বলে লোকজনকে এক শপথের অধীনে বেঁধে দিলেন, “সন্ধ্যা ঘনিয়ে আসার আগে, আমার শত্রুদের উপর আমি প্রতিশোধ নেওয়ার আগে যদি কেউ খাবার খায়, তবে সে শাপগ্রস্ত হোক!” তাই সৈন্যদলের কেউই খাবার মুখে তোলেনি।

25 All the people came into the forest; and there was honey on the ground.

গোটা সৈন্যদল অরণ্যে প্রবেশ করল, আর সেখানে জমির উপর মধু পড়েছিল।

26 When the people had come to the forest, behold, honey was dripping, but no one put his hand to his mouth, for the people feared the oath.

অরণ্যে প্রবেশ করে তারা দেখেছিল যে মধু চুঁইয়ে পড়ছে; তবুও কেউ মুখে হাত ঠেকায়নি, কারণ তারা শপথের ভয় করছিল।

27 But Jonathan did not hear when his father commanded the people with the oath. Therefore he put out the end of the rod that was in his hand and dipped it in the honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes brightened.

কিন্তু যোনাথন শোনেননি যে তাঁর বাবা প্রজাদের শপথে বেঁধে রেখেছেন, তাই তিনি তাঁর হাতে থাকা ছড়ির ডগাটি বাড়িয়ে মৌচাকে ডুবিয়ে দিলেন। তিনি হাত বাড়িয়ে মুখে দেওয়ামাত্র তাঁর চোখদুটি উজ্জ্বল হয়ে উঠেছিল।

28 Then one of the people answered, and said, “Your father directly commanded the people with an oath, saying, ‘Cursed is the man who eats food today.’” So the people were faint.

তখন সৈন্যদের মধ্যে একজন তাঁকে বলল, “আপনার বাবা এই বলে সৈন্যদলকে কঠোর নিয়মানুবর্তী এক শপথে বেঁধে রেখেছেন যে, ‘আজ যে কেউ খাবার খাবে সে শাপগ্রস্ত হোক!’ তাইতো লোকেরা দুর্বল হয়ে পড়েছে।”

29 Then Jonathan said, “My father has troubled the land. Please look how my eyes have brightened because I tasted a little of this honey.

যোনাথন বললেন, “আমার বাবা দেশে কষ্ট ডেকে এনেছেন। দেখো তো, এই মধুর কিছুটা চাখাতেই কীভাবে আমার চোখদুটি উজ্জ্বল হয়ে উঠেছে।

30 How much more, if perhaps the people had eaten freely today of the plunder of their enemies which they found? For now there has been no great slaughter among the Philistines.”

লোকেরা আজ যদি তাদের শত্রুদের কাছ থেকে কেড়ে নেওয়া লুন্ঠিত জিনিসপত্রের কিছুটা খেতে পারত তবে কতই না ভালো হত। ফিলিস্তিনীদের সংহার আরও বড়ো মাপের হত নাকি?”

31 They struck the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon. The people were very faint;

সেদিন, মিক্‌মস থেকে অয়ালোন পর্যন্ত ফিলিস্তিনীদের আঘাত করতে করতে ইস্রায়েলীরা ক্লান্ত হয়ে পড়েছিল।

32 and the people pounced on the plunder, and took sheep, cattle, and calves, and killed them on the ground; and the people ate them with the blood.

তারা লুন্ঠিত জিনিসপত্রের উপর ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়ে মেষ, গবাদি পশু ও বাছুরদের ধরে ধরে জমির উপরেই সেগুলি বধ করে রক্ত সমেত খেয়ে ফেলেছিল।

33 Then they told Saul, saying, “Behold, the people are sinning against the LORD, in that they eat meat with the blood.” He said, “You have dealt treacherously. Roll a large stone to me today!”

তখন কেউ একজন গিয়ে শৌলকে বলল, “দেখুন, রক্ত সমেত মাংস খেয়ে লোকেরা সদাপ্রভুর বিরুদ্ধে পাপ করছে।” তিনি বললেন, “তোমরা বিশ্বাস ভঙ্গ করেছ। এখনই এখানে একটি বড়ো পাথর গড়িয়ে আনো।”

34 Saul said, “Disperse yourselves among the people, and tell them, ‘Every man bring me here his ox, and every man his sheep, and kill them here, and eat; and do not sin against the LORD in eating meat with the blood.’” All the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and killed them there.

পরে তিনি বললেন, “লোকদের মধ্যে গিয়ে তাদের বলো, ‘তোমাদের মধ্যে প্রত্যেকে আমার কাছে তোমাদের গবাদি পশু ও মেষপাল নিয়ে এসো, ও সেগুলি এখানে বধ করে খেয়ে ফেলো। রক্ত সমেত মাংস খেয়ে তোমরা সদাপ্রভুর বিরুদ্ধে পাপ কোরো না।’” অতএব প্রত্যেকে সেরাত্রে যে যার বলদ নিয়ে এসে সেখানে বধ করল।

35 Saul built an altar to the LORD. This was the first altar that he built to the LORD.

তখন শৌল সদাপ্রভুর উদ্দেশে এক যজ্ঞবেদি তৈরি করলেন; এই প্রথমবার তিনি এমনটি করলেন।

36 Saul said, “Let’s go down after the Philistines by night, and take plunder among them until the morning light. Let’s not leave a man of them.” They said, “Do whatever seems good to you.” Then the priest said, “Let’s draw near here to God.”

শৌল বললেন, “চলো, আজ রাতেই আমরা ফিলিস্তিনীদের পিছনে তাড়া করে ভোর পর্যন্ত তাদের উপর লুটপাট চালাই, এবং তাদের মধ্যে একজনকেও প্রাণে বাঁচিয়ে না রাখি।” তারা উত্তর দিয়েছিল, “আপনার যা ভালো মনে হয় তাই করুন।” কিন্তু যাজক বললেন, “আসুন, আমরা এখানে ঈশ্বরের কাছে খোঁজ করি।”

37 Saul asked counsel of God: “Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will you deliver them into the hand of Israel?” But he did not answer him that day.

অতএব শৌল ঈশ্বরকে জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন, “আমি কি ফিলিস্তিনীদের পিছনে তাড়া করব? তুমি কি তাদের ইস্রায়েলের হাতে তুলে দেবে?” কিন্তু ঈশ্বর সেদিন তাঁকে কোনও উত্তর দেননি।

38 Saul said, “Draw near here, all you chiefs of the people, and know and see in whom this sin has been today.

অতএব শৌল বললেন, “তোমরা যারা সৈন্যদলের নেতা, তারা এখানে এসো, এবং খুঁজে দেখা যাক আজ কী পাপ ঘটেছে।

39 For as the LORD lives, who saves Israel, though it is in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die.” But there was not a man among all the people who answered him.

ইস্রায়েলের রক্ষাকর্তা সদাপ্রভুর দিব্যি, দোষ যদি আমার ছেলে যোনাথন করে থাকে, তবে তাকেই মরতে হবে।” কিন্তু তাদের কেউই কোনও কথা বলেনি।

40 Then he said to all Israel, “You be on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side.” The people said to Saul, “Do what seems good to you.”

শৌল তখন সব ইস্রায়েলীকে বললেন, “তোমরা সব ওখানে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকো; আমি ও আমার ছেলে যোনাথন এখানে এসে দাঁড়াব।” “আপনার যা ভালো মনে হয়, তাই করুন,” তারা উত্তর দিয়েছিল।

41 Therefore Saul said to the LORD, the God of Israel, “Show the right.” Jonathan and Saul were chosen, but the people escaped.

তখন শৌল ইস্রায়েলের ঈশ্বর সদাপ্রভুর কাছে প্রার্থনা করলেন, “আজ তুমি কেন তোমার দাসকে উত্তর দিলে না? আমি বা আমার ছেলে যোনাথন যদি দোষ করে থাকি, তবে ঊরীমের মাধ্যমে উত্তর দাও, কিন্তু ইস্রায়েলের জনতা যদি ভুল করে থাকে, তবে তূম্মীমের মাধ্যমে উত্তর দাও।” গুটিকাপাতের মাধ্যমে যোনাথন ও শৌল ধরা পড়েছিলেন, এবং জনতা মুক্ত হল।

42 Saul said, “Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son.” Jonathan was selected.

শৌল বললেন, “আমার ও আমার ছেলে যোনাথনের মধ্যে গুটিকাপাতের দান চালো।” তাতে যোনাথন ধরা পড়েছিলেন।

43 Then Saul said to Jonathan, “Tell me what you have done!” Jonathan told him, and said, “I certainly did taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in my hand; and behold, I must die.”

তখন শৌল যোনাথনকে বললেন, “তুমি কী করেছ তা আমায় বলো।” যোনাথন তাঁকে বললেন, “আমি আমার লাঠির ডগায় করে একটু মধু চেখেছি। এখন আমায় মরতে হবে!”

44 Saul said, “God do so and more also; for you shall surely die, Jonathan.”

শৌল বললেন, “যোনাথন, তুমি যদি মারা না যাও, তবে ঈশ্বর যেন আমায় আরও বেশি শাস্তি দেন।”

45 The people said to Saul, “Shall Jonathan die, who has worked this great salvation in Israel? Far from it! As the LORD lives, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground, for he has worked with God today!” So the people rescued Jonathan, so he did not die.

কিন্তু লোকেরা শৌলকে বলল, “যিনি ইস্রায়েলে এমন মহা উদ্ধার এনে দিয়েছেন—সেই যোনাথন মরবেন? তা হবে না! জীবন্ত সদাপ্রভুর দিব্যি, তাঁর মাথার একটি চুলও মাটিতে পড়বে না, কারণ ঈশ্বরের সাহায্য নিয়ে তিনিই আজ এমনটি করেছেন।” অতএব লোকেরা যোনাথনকে রক্ষা করল, এবং তাঁকে মরতে হয়নি।

46 Then Saul went up from following the Philistines; and the Philistines went to their own place.

পরে শৌল আর ফিলিস্তিনীদের পশ্চাদ্ধাবন করেননি, এবং তারাও তাদের দেশে ফিরে গেল।

47 Now when Saul had taken the kingdom over Israel, he fought against all his enemies on every side: against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines. Wherever he turned himself, he defeated them.

শৌল ইস্রায়েলের উপর রাজত্ব করা শুরু করার পরপরই তিনি তাদের সব শত্রুর: মোয়াব, অম্মোনীয়, ইদোমীয়, সোবার রাজাদের ও ফিলিস্তিনীদের বিরুদ্ধে যুদ্ধ করলেন। তিনি যেদিকেই যেতেন, তাদের শাস্তি দিয়ে যেতেন।

48 He did valiantly and struck the Amalekites, and delivered Israel out of the hands of those who plundered them.

তিনি বীরের মতো যুদ্ধ করে অমালেকীয়দের পরাস্ত করলেন, ও ইস্রায়েলকে তাদের হাত থেকে মুক্ত করলেন, যারা তাদের উপর লুঠতরাজ চালিয়েছিল।

49 Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, Ishvi, and Malchishua; and the names of his two daughters were these: the name of the firstborn Merab, and the name of the younger Michal.

শৌলের ছেলেদের নাম যোনাথন, যিশবি ও মল্কীশূয়। তাঁর বড়ো মেয়ের নাম মেরব ও ছোটোটির নাম মীখল।

50 The name of Saul’s wife was Ahinoam the daughter of Ahimaaz. The name of the captain of his army was Abner the son of Ner, Saul’s uncle.

তাঁর স্ত্রীর নাম অহীনোয়ম, যিনি অহীমাসের মেয়ে। শৌলের সৈন্যদলের সেনাপতির নাম অবনের, তিনি নেরের ছেলে, এবং নের ছিলেন শৌলের কাকা।

51 Kish was the father of Saul, and Ner the father of Abner was the son of Abiel.

শৌলের বাবা কীশ ও অবনেরের বাবা নের ছিলেন অবীয়েলের ছেলে।

52 There was severe war against the Philistines all the days of Saul; and when Saul saw any mighty man or any valiant man, he took him into his service.

শৌলের সমগ্র রাজত্বকাল জুড়ে ফিলিস্তিনীদের সঙ্গে তাদের ভীষণ যুদ্ধ লেগেই থাকত, এবং শৌল যখনই কোনও মহান বা সাহসী লোক দেখতেন, তিনি তাকে তাঁর সৈন্যদলে ভর্তি করে নিতেন।
