< 1 Kings 18 >

1 After many days, the LORD’s word came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, “Go, show yourself to Ahab; and I will send rain on the earth.”
Yeroo dheeraa booddee, waggaa sadaffaatti dubbiin Waaqayyoo, “Dhaqiitii Ahaabitti of mulʼisi; anis lafa irratti bokkaa nan roobsaa” jedhee gara Eeliyaas dhufe.
2 Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. The famine was severe in Samaria.
Kanaafuu Eeliyaas Ahaabitti of mulʼisuu dhaqe. Yeroo kanatti Samaariyaa keessatti beelli hammaatee ture.
3 Ahab called Obadiah, who was over the household. (Now Obadiah feared the LORD greatly;
Ahaabis Obaadiyaa itti gaafatama masaraa mootummaa isaa waamee ture. Obaadiyaan nama akka malee Waaqayyoon sodaatu ture.
4 for when Jezebel cut off the LORD’s prophets, Obadiah took one hundred prophets, and hid them fifty to a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)
Yeroo Iizaabel raajota Waaqayyoo ajjeesaa turtetti Obaadiyaan raajota dhibba tokko fuudhee shantama shantamaan holqa lama keessa dhoksee nyaataa fi bishaan dhiʼeessaafii ture.
5 Ahab said to Obadiah, “Go through the land, to all the springs of water, and to all the brooks. Perhaps we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, that we not lose all the animals.”
Ahaabis Obaadiyaadhaan akkana jedhe; “Biyyattii keessa deemiitii gara burqaawwanii fi sululawwan hundaa dhaqi. Akka horii keenya keessaa tokko iyyuu nu jalaa hin duuneef fardeenii fi gaangolii keenya jiraachifachuuf marga muraasa arganna taʼaatii.”
6 So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it. Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.
Kanaafuu isaan biyya keessa deemanii waliin gaʼuu barbaadan sana gargari qooddatan; Ahaab karaa tokko, Obaadiyaan immoo karaa kaan qajeele.
7 As Obadiah was on the way, behold, Elijah met him. He recognized him, and fell on his face, and said, “Is it you, my lord Elijah?”
Utuma Obaadiyaan karaa deemuu Eeliyaas isatti dhufe. Obaadiyaan isa beekee gad jedhee harka fuudhee, “Eeliyaas gooftaan koo dhugumaan siʼii?” jedheen.
8 He answered him, “It is I. Go, tell your lord, ‘Behold, Elijah is here!’”
Innis deebisee, “Eeyyee, anuma. Dhaqiitii, ‘Eeliyaas as jira’ jedhii gooftaa keetti himi” jedheen.
9 He said, “How have I sinned, that you would deliver your servant into the hand of Ahab, to kill me?
Obaadiyaanis akkana jedhee gaafate; “Ati akka inni na ajjeesuuf garbicha kee dabarsitee Ahaabitti kennuun kee ani maal balleesseeti?
10 As the LORD your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my lord has not sent to seek you. When they said, ‘He is not here,’ he took an oath of the kingdom and nation that they did not find you.
Dhugaa Waaqayyo Waaqa kee jiraataa sanaa, sabni yookaan mootummaan gooftaan koo si barbaaduuf jedhee nama itti hin ergin tokko iyyuu hin jiru. Yeroo sabni yookaan mootummaan tokko, ‘Nu isa hin argine’ jedhutti, inni akka isaan akka si hin argin kakatan godha ture.
11 Now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord, “Behold, Elijah is here.”’
Amma garuu ati, ‘Dhaqiitii, “Kunoo Eeliyaas as jira” jedhiitii gooftaa keetti himi’ naan jetta.
12 It will happen, as soon as I leave you, that the LORD’s Spirit will carry you I do not know where; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find you, he will kill me. But I, your servant, have feared the LORD from my youth.
Ani gara Hafuurri Waaqayyoo erga ani si biraa deeme itti si geessu hin beeku. Yoo ani dhaqee Ahaabitti himee inni immoo si arguu baate inni na ajjeesa. Garuu ani garbichi kee dargaggummaa kootii jalqabee Waaqayyoon waaqeffachaan jira.
13 Was not it told my lord what I did when Jezebel killed the LORD’s prophets, how I hid one hundred men of the LORD’s prophets with fifty to a cave, and fed them with bread and water?
Yaa gooftaa ko, ati waan ani yeroo Iizaabel raajota Waaqayyoo ajjeesaa turtetti hojjedhe hin dhageenyee? Ani raajota Waaqayyoo dhibba tokko shantama shantamaan holqa lama keessa dhokseen nyaataa fi bishaan dhiʼeesseef.
14 Now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord, “Behold, Elijah is here”.’ He will kill me.”
Amma immoo ati, ‘Dhaqiitii, “Kunoo Eeliyaas as jira” jedhii gooftaa keetti himi’ naan jetta. Inni dhugumaan na ajjeesa!”
15 Elijah said, “As the LORD of Armies lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him today.”
Eeliyaasis deebisee, “Dhugaa Waaqayyoo Waan Hunda Dandaʼu kan ani isa tajaajilu sanaa, ani harʼa Ahaabitti ofan mulʼisa” jedhe.
16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him; and Ahab went to meet Elijah.
Kanaafuu Obaadiyaan gara Ahaab dhaqee itti hime; Ahaabis Eeliyaasin Simachuu dhaqe.
17 When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, “Is that you, you troubler of Israel?”
Innis Eeliyaasin argee, “Kan Israaʼelin jeequ sun siʼii?” jedheen.
18 He answered, “I have not troubled Israel, but you and your father’s house, in that you have forsaken the LORD’s commandments and you have followed the Baals.
Eeliyaas immoo deebisee akkana jedheen; “Siʼii fi mana abbaa keetiitu jeeqe malee ani Israaʼelin hin jeeqne. Isin ajaja Waaqayyoo diddaniirtu; atis Baʼaal duukaa buuteerta.
19 Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel to Mount Carmel, and four hundred fifty of the prophets of Baal, and four hundred of the prophets of the Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”
Egaa amma akka isaan Tulluu Qarmeloos irratti na arganiif saba Israaʼel hunda walitti naaf waami. Raajota Baʼaal dhibba afurii fi shantamaa fi raajota Asheeraa dhibba afran maaddii Iizaabel irraa nyaatan sanas naaf fidi.”
20 So Ahab sent to all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together to Mount Carmel.
Kanaafis Ahaab guutuu Israaʼel keessa ergaa ergee Tulluu Qarmeloos irratti raajota sana walitti qabe.
21 Elijah came near to all the people, and said, “How long will you waver between the two sides? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.” The people did not say a word.
Eeliyaasis fuula sabaa duratti gad baʼee, “Isin hamma yoomiitti yaada lama gidduu deddeebitu? Yoo Waaqayyo Waaqa taʼe, isa faana deemaa; yoo Baʼaal Waaqa taʼe immoo isa faana deemaa” jedhe. Sabni garuu waan tokko illee hin jenne.
22 Then Elijah said to the people, “I, even I only, am left as a prophet of the LORD; but Baal’s prophets are four hundred fifty men.
Eeliyaasis akkana isaaniin jedhe; “Raajota Waaqayyoo keessaa ana qofatu hafe; Baʼaal garuu raajota dhibba afurii fi shantama qaba.
23 Let them therefore give us two bulls; and let them choose one bull for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under; and I will dress the other bull, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under it.
Mee jiboota lama nuuf fidaa. Isaan dibicha tokko ofii isaaniitiif filatanii qalanii gargar ciranii qoraan irra haa naqan; garuu ibidda itti hin qabsiisin. Anis dibicha isa kaan qopheessee qoraan irra nan kaaʼa; garuu ibidda itti hin qabsiisu.
24 You call on the name of your god, and I will call on the LORD’s name. The God who answers by fire, let him be God.” All the people answered, “What you say is good.”
Ergasii isin maqaa Waaqa keessanii waamaa; anis maqaa Waaqayyo nan waama. Kan ibiddaan deebii kennu inni Waaqa dhugaa ti.” Kana irratti namoonni hundinuu, “Wanni ati jettu kun gaarii dha” jedhan.
25 Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one bull for yourselves, and dress it first, for you are many; and call on the name of your god, but put no fire under it.”
Eeliyaasis raajota Baʼaaliin akkana jedhe; “Jiboota keessaa isa tokko filadhaatii sababii isin nama hedduu taataniif jalqabatti qalaa qopheessaa. Maqaa Waaqa keessanii waammadhaa; garuu ibidda hin bobeessinaa.”
26 They took the bull which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, “Baal, hear us!” But there was no voice, and nobody answered. They leaped about the altar which was made.
Kanaafuu isaan dibicha isaaniif kenname fudhatanii qalanii qopheessan. Ergasii immoo ganamaa jalqabanii hamma saafaatti maqaa Baʼaal waammachaa oolan. “Yaa Baʼaal deebii nuuf kenni!” jedhanii iyyaa oolan. Garuu deebiin tokko illee hin argamne; kan deebii kennuuf tokko iyyuus hin turre. Iddoo aarsaa kan tolchan sanattis naannaʼanii shubbisan.
27 At noon, Elijah mocked them, and said, “Cry aloud, for he is a god. Either he is deep in thought, or he has gone somewhere, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he sleeps and must be awakened.”
Gara saafaattis Eeliyaas, “Mee sagalee ol fudhadhaatii iyyaa! Inni dhugumaan Waaqa! Yaadni itti baayʼateera taʼa yookaan hojiin qabamee yookaan karaa deemee jira taʼaatii. Inni rafuutti jira taʼaatii dammaquu qaba” jedhee isaanitti qoosuu jalqabe.
28 They cried aloud, and cut themselves in their way with knives and lances until the blood gushed out on them.
Kanaafuu isaan akkuma amala isaanii sagalee ol fudhatanii iyyaa, goraadee fi eeboodhaan of ciranii dhiiga ofii isaanii dhangalaasan.
29 When midday was past, they prophesied until the time of the evening offering; but there was no voice, no answer, and nobody paid attention.
Erga saafaan darbees isaan hamma yeroon aarsaa galgalaa gaʼutti raajii dubbachaa turan. Garuu sagaleen tokko iyyuu hin dhagaʼamne; kan deebii kenneef tokko iyyuu hin turre; kan wayittuu isaan hedes hin jiru.
30 Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me!”; and all the people came near to him. He repaired the LORD’s altar that had been thrown down.
Eeliyaas immoo ergasii saba hundaan, “Mee as gara koo kottaa” jedhe. Isaan gara isaa dhufnaan inni iddoo aarsaa Waaqayyoo kan caccabee ture sana deebisee tolche.
31 Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the LORD’s word came, saying, “Israel shall be your name.”
Eeliyaasis akkuma baayʼina gosoota ilmaan Yaaqoob namicha dubbiin Waaqayyoo gara isaa dhufee, “Maqaan kee Israaʼel ni taʼa” jedheen sanaatti dhagaa kudha lama walitti qabe.
32 With the stones he built an altar in the LORD’s name. He made a trench around the altar large enough to contain two seahs of seed.
Dhagaawwan sanaanis maqaa Waaqayyootiin iddoo aarsaa tolche; naannoo isaattis boʼoo bishaan gara liitira kudha shan qabatu baqaqse.
33 He put the wood in order, and cut the bull in pieces and laid it on the wood. He said, “Fill four jars with water, and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood.”
Innis qoraan qopheessee, dibicha kaan qalee gargar ciree qoraan sana irra foon naqe. Ergasii immoo, “Mee okkotee gurguddaa afur fidaa bishaaniin guutaatii aarsaa fi qoraan irratti naqaa” jedheen.
34 He said, “Do it a second time;” and they did it the second time. He said, “Do it a third time;” and they did it the third time.
Innis, “Amma illee akkasuma godhaa” jedheen; isaanis amma illee akkasuma godhan. Innis, “Yeroo sadaffaaf godhaa” jedhee ajaje; isaanis yeroo sadaffaa illee akkasuma godhan.
35 The water ran around the altar; and he also filled the trench with water.
Bishaan sunis naannoo iddoo aarsaa sanaa lolaʼee boʼoo guute.
36 At the time of the evening offering, Elijah the prophet came near and said, “LORD, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word.
Yeroo aarsaan dhiʼaatutti, Eeliyaas raajichi gad baʼee akkana jedhee kadhate; “Yaa Waaqayyo, yaa Waaqa Abrahaam, Waaqa Yisihaaq, Waaqa Israaʼel, akka ati Israaʼel keessatti Waaqa taatee fi akka anis garbicha kee taʼee amma illee waan kana hunda ajajuma keetiin akkan hojjedhe harʼa haa beekamu.
37 Hear me, LORD, hear me, that this people may know that you, LORD, are God, and that you have turned their heart back again.”
Yaa Waaqayyo deebii naa kenni; yaa Waaqayyo akka sabni kun akka ati Waaqa taatee fi akka ati garaa isaa illee gara keetti deebiftu beekuuf deebii naaf kenni.”
38 Then the LORD’s fire fell and consumed the burnt offering, the wood, the stones, and the dust; and it licked up the water that was in the trench.
Kana irratti ibiddi Waaqayyoo gad buʼee aarsaa, qoraan, dhagaa fi biyyoo gubee bishaan boʼoo keessaa sanas xuuxee fixe.
39 When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces. They said, “The LORD, he is God! The LORD, he is God!”
Namoonni hundinuu yommuu waan kana arganitti addaan lafatti gombifamanii, “Waaqayyo inni Waaqa! Waaqayyo inni Waaqa!” jedhanii iyyan.
40 Elijah said to them, “Seize the prophets of Baal! Do not let one of them escape!” They seized them; and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and killed them there.
Eeliyaasis, “Raajota Baʼaal kanneen qabaa. Tokkoon isaanii iyyuu hin miliqin!” jedhee isaan ajaje. Isaanis jara ni qaban; Eeliyaasis gara Sulula Qiishoonitti geessee achitti isaan gogorraʼe.
41 Elijah said to Ahab, “Get up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of abundance of rain.”
Eeliyaasis Ahaabiin, “Deemi; nyaadhuu dhugi; huursaa bokkaa guddaa isaatu dhagaʼamaa jiraatii” jedhe.
42 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he bowed himself down on the earth, and put his face between his knees.
Kanaafuu Ahaab nyaachuu fi dhuguuf deeme; Eeliyaas garuu fiixee Qarmeloos ol baʼee gad jedhee fuula isaa jilba isaa gidduu kaaʼate.
43 He said to his servant, “Go up now and look toward the sea.” He went up and looked, then said, “There is nothing.” He said, “Go again” seven times.
Innis hojjetaa isaatiin, “Dhaqiitii gara galaanaa ilaali” jedhe. Hojjetaan sunis ol baʼee ilaale. Innis, “Wanni tokko iyyuu achi hin jiru” jedhe. Eeliyaasis, “Yeroo torba, deddeebiʼii ilaali” jedheen.
44 On the seventh time, he said, “Behold, a small cloud, like a man’s hand, is rising out of the sea.” He said, “Go up, tell Ahab, ‘Get ready and go down, so that the rain does not stop you.’”
Hojjetaan sun yeroo torbaffaatti, “Duumessa xinnaa hamma konyee namaa gaʼu tokkotu galaana irraa ol kaʼaa jira” jedhee itti hime. Kanaafuu Eeliyaas, “Dhaqiitii Ahaabiin, ‘Gaarii kee yaabbadhuutii utuu bokkaan si hin qabatin gad buʼi’ jedhii itti himi” jedheen.
45 In a little while, the sky grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel.
Yeruma sana samiin duumessaan gurraachaʼee bubbeen bubbise; bokkaan guddaan isaa dhufnaan Ahaab gulufee Yizriʼeelitti baqate.
46 The LORD’s hand was on Elijah; and he tucked his cloak into his belt and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.
Humni Waaqayyoos Eeliyaas irra buʼe; innis mudhii isaa hidhatee hamma karra Yizriʼeelitti Ahaab dura darbee fiige.
