< 1 Corinthians 8 >

1 Now concerning things sacrificed to idols: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.
ⲁ̅ⲈⲐⲂⲈ ⲚⲒϢⲰⲦ ⲆⲈ ⲚⲒⲆⲰⲖⲞⲚ ⲦⲈⲚⲤⲰⲞⲨⲚ ϪⲈ ⲞⲨⲞⲚ ⲞⲨⲈⲘⲒ ⲚϦⲎⲦⲈⲚ ⲦⲎⲢⲞⲨ ⲠⲈⲘⲒ ϢⲀϤϬⲒⲤⲒ ϮⲀⲄⲀⲠⲎ ⲆⲈ ϢⲀⲤⲔⲰⲦ.
2 But if anyone thinks that he knows anything, he does not yet know as he ought to know.
ⲃ̅ⲪⲎ ⲈⲦϪⲰ ⲘⲘⲞⲤ ϪⲈ ⲀⲒⲈⲘⲒ ⲈϨⲖⲒ ⲘⲠⲀⲦⲈϤⲈⲘⲒ ⲔⲀⲦⲀ ⲪⲢⲎϮ ⲈⲦⲤϢⲈ ⲚⲈⲘⲒ ⲘⲘⲞϤ.
3 But anyone who loves God is known by him.
ⲅ̅ⲪⲎ ⲆⲈ ⲈⲦⲈⲢⲀⲄⲀⲠⲀⲚ ⲘⲪⲚⲞⲨϮ ⲪⲀⲒ ⲀⲨⲤⲞⲨⲰⲚϤ ⲈⲂⲞⲖ ϨⲒⲦⲞⲦϤ.
4 Therefore concerning the eating of things sacrificed to idols, we know that no idol is anything in the world, and that there is no other God but one.
ⲇ̅ⲈⲐⲂⲈ ⲚⲒϦⲢⲎⲞⲨⲒ ⲞⲨⲚ ⲚⲦⲈⲚⲒϢⲰⲦ ⲚⲒⲆⲰⲖⲞⲚ ⲦⲈⲚⲈⲘⲒ ϪⲈ ϨⲖⲒ ⲠⲈ ⲚⲒⲆⲰⲖⲞⲚ ϦⲈⲚⲠⲒⲔⲞⲤⲘⲞⲤ ⲞⲨⲞϨ ϪⲈ ⲘⲘⲞⲚ ϨⲖⲒ ⲚⲚⲞⲨϮ ⲈⲂⲎⲖ ⲈⲞⲨⲀⲒ.
5 For though there are things that are called “gods”, whether in the heavens or on earth—as there are many “gods” and many “lords”—
ⲉ̅ⲔⲈ ⲄⲀⲢ ⲒⲤϪⲈ ⲞⲨⲞⲚ ϨⲀⲚⲞⲨⲞⲚ ⲈⲨⲘⲞⲨϮ ⲈⲢⲰⲞⲨ ϪⲈ ⲚⲞⲨϮ ⲒⲦⲈ ⲚϨⲢⲎⲒ ϦⲈⲚⲦⲪⲈ ⲒⲦⲈ ϨⲒϪⲈⲚ ⲠⲒⲔⲀϨⲒ ⲘⲪⲢⲎϮ ⲈⲦⲈ ⲞⲨⲞⲚ ⲞⲨⲘⲎϢ ⲚⲚⲞⲨϮ ⲚⲈⲘ ⲞⲨⲘⲎϢ ⲚϬⲞⲒⲤ.
6 yet to us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and we live through him.
ⲋ̅ⲚⲀⲚ ⲆⲈ ⲀⲚⲞⲚ ⲞⲨⲀⲒ ⲠⲈ ⲪⲚⲞⲨϮ ⲪⲒⲰⲦ ⲪⲎ ⲈⲦⲀ ⲈⲚⲬⲀⲒ ⲚⲒⲂⲈⲚ ϢⲰⲠⲒ ⲈⲂⲞⲖ ϨⲒⲦⲞⲦϤ ⲞⲨⲞϨ ⲀⲚⲞⲚ ϨⲰⲚ ⲈϦⲞⲨⲚ ⲈⲢⲞϤ ⲞⲨⲀⲒ ⲠⲈ ⲠⲈⲚϬⲞⲒⲤ ⲒⲎⲤⲞⲨⲤ ⲠⲬⲢⲒⲤⲦⲞⲤ ⲪⲎ ⲈⲦⲀ ⲈⲚⲬⲀⲒ ⲚⲒⲂⲈⲚ ϢⲰⲠⲒ ⲈⲂⲞⲖ ϨⲒⲦⲞⲦϤ ⲞⲨⲞϨ ⲀⲚⲞⲚ ϨⲰⲚ ⲈⲂⲞⲖ ϨⲒⲦⲞⲦϤ.
7 However, that knowledge is not in all men. But some, with consciousness of an idol until now, eat as of a thing sacrificed to an idol, and their conscience, being weak, is defiled.
ⲍ̅ⲀⲖⲖⲀ ⲠⲈⲘⲒ ϦⲈⲚⲞⲨⲞⲚ ⲚⲒⲂⲈⲚ ⲀⲚ ϨⲀⲚⲞⲨⲞⲚ ⲄⲀⲢ ϢⲀ ⲈϦⲞⲨⲚ ⲈϮⲚⲞⲨ ϦⲈⲚϮⲔⲀϨⲤ ⲚⲦⲈⲚⲒⲒⲆⲰⲖⲞⲚ ⲤⲈⲞⲨⲰⲘ ⲘⲪⲢⲎϮ ⲚϨⲀⲚϢⲰⲦ ⲚⲒⲆⲰⲖⲞⲚ ⲞⲨⲞϨ ⲦⲞⲨⲤⲨⲚⲎⲆⲈⲤⲒⲤ ⲈⲤϢⲰⲚⲒ ⲈⲢⲰⲞⲨ ϢⲀⲤϬⲰϦⲈⲘ.
8 But food will not commend us to God. For neither, if we do not eat are we the worse, nor if we eat are we the better.
ⲏ̅ⲞⲨϦⲢⲈ ⲆⲈ ⲀⲚ ⲈⲐⲚⲀⲦⲀϨⲞⲚ ⲈⲢⲀⲦⲈⲚ ⲘⲪⲚⲞⲨϮ ⲞⲨⲆⲈ ⲀⲚϢⲦⲈⲘⲞⲨⲰⲘ ⲦⲈⲚⲚⲀϬⲢⲞϨ ⲀⲚ ⲞⲨⲆⲈ ⲀⲚϢⲀⲚⲞⲨⲰⲘ ⲦⲈⲚⲚⲀⲈⲢϨⲞⲨⲞ ⲀⲚ.
9 But be careful that by no means does this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to the weak.
ⲑ̅ⲀⲚⲀⲨ ⲆⲈ ⲘⲎⲠⲰⲤ ⲚⲦⲈⲠⲈⲦⲈⲚⲈⲢϢⲒϢⲒ ⲪⲀⲒ ⲚⲦⲈϤϢⲰⲠⲒ ⲚϬⲢⲞⲠ ⲚⲚⲎ ⲈⲦϢⲰⲚⲒ.
10 For if a man sees you who have knowledge sitting in an idol’s temple, will not his conscience, if he is weak, be emboldened to eat things sacrificed to idols?
ⲓ̅ⲀϤϢⲀⲚⲚⲀⲨ ⲈⲢⲞⲔ ⲚϪⲈⲞⲨⲀⲒ ϦⲀ ⲪⲎ ⲈⲦⲈ ⲠⲈⲘⲒ ⲚⲦⲞⲦϤ ⲈⲔⲢⲰⲦⲈⲂ ϦⲈⲚⲞⲨⲘⲀ ⲚⲒⲆⲰⲖⲞⲚ ⲞⲨⲬⲒ ⲦⲈϤⲤⲨⲚⲎⲆⲈⲤⲒⲤ ⲈⲤⲞⲒ ⲚⲢⲈϤϢⲰⲚⲒ ⲤⲚⲀⲔⲰⲦ ⲈⲠϪⲒⲚⲐⲢⲈϤⲞⲨⲈⲘ ϢⲰⲦ ⲚⲒⲆⲰⲖⲞⲚ.
11 And through your knowledge, he who is weak perishes, the brother for whose sake Christ died.
ⲓ̅ⲁ̅ϢⲀϤⲦⲀⲔⲞ ⲄⲀⲢ ⲚϪⲈⲪⲎ ⲈⲦϢⲰⲚⲒ ϦⲈⲚⲠⲈⲔⲈⲘⲒ ⲠⲒⲤⲞⲚ ⲈⲦⲀ ⲠⲬⲢⲒⲤⲦⲞⲤ ⲘⲞⲨ ⲈϨⲢⲎⲒ ⲈϪⲰϤ.
12 Thus, sinning against the brothers, and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ.
ⲓ̅ⲃ̅ⲠⲀⲒⲢⲎϮ ⲆⲈ ⲈⲢⲈⲦⲈⲚⲈⲢⲚⲞⲂⲒ ⲈⲚⲒⲤⲚⲎⲞⲨ ⲞⲨⲞϨ ⲈⲢⲈⲦⲈⲚⲘⲒϢⲒ ⲈⲦⲞⲨⲤⲨⲚⲎⲆⲈⲤⲒⲤ ⲈⲦϢⲰⲚⲒ ⲀⲢⲈⲦⲈⲚⲈⲢⲚⲞⲂⲒ ⲈⲠⲬⲢⲒⲤⲦⲞⲤ.
13 Therefore, if food causes my brother to stumble, I will eat no meat for this age (aiōn g165), that I do not cause my brother to stumble.
ⲓ̅ⲅ̅ⲈⲐⲂⲈⲪⲀⲒ ⲒⲤϪⲈ ⲞⲨϦⲢⲈ ⲈⲐⲚⲀⲈⲢⲤⲔⲀⲚⲆⲀⲖⲒⲌⲒⲚ ⲘⲠⲀⲤⲞⲚ ⲚⲚⲀⲞⲨⲈⲘ ⲀϤ ϢⲀ ⲈⲚⲈϨ ϨⲒⲚⲀ ⲚⲦⲀϢⲦⲈⲘⲈⲢⲤⲔⲀⲚⲆⲀⲖⲒⲌⲒⲚ ⲘⲠⲀⲤⲞⲚ. (aiōn g165)
