< Proverbs 20 >
1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever errs thereby is not wise.
Vin er en Spotter, stærk Drik en Larmer, og hver som raver deraf, bliver ikke viis.
2 The terror of a king is as the roaring of a lion. He who provokes him to anger sins against his own life.
Den Forfærdelse, en Konge vækker, er som en ung Løves Brølen; den, som fortørner ham, synder imod sit Liv.
3 It is an honor for a man to keep aloof from strife, but every fool will be quarrelling.
Det er en Ære for en Mand at blive fra Trætte, men hver Daare vælter sig ind i den.
4 The sluggard will not plow because of the winter. Therefore he shall beg in harvest, and have nothing.
Fordi det er Vinter, vil den lade ikke pløje; om Høsten vil han søge, og der er intet.
5 Purpose in the heart of man is deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out.
Raad i en Mands Hjerte er dybt Vand, men en forstandig Mand drager det op.
6 Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness, but a faithful man who can find?
Mange Mennesker udraabe hver sin Kærlighed; men hvo finder en trofast Mand?
7 A righteous man who walks in his integrity, blessed are his sons after him.
Den, som vandrer frem i sin Oprigtighed, er retfærdig; lyksalige ere hans Børn efter ham.
8 A king who sits on the throne of judgment scatters away all evil with his eyes.
En Konge, som sidder paa Domstolen, udskiller alle onde med sine Øjne.
9 Who can say, I have made my heart clean. I am pure from my sin?
Hvo kan sige: Jeg har renset mit Hjerte; jeg er ren for min Synd?
10 Diverse weights, and diverse measures, both of them alike are an abomination to Jehovah.
To Slags Vægt og to Slags Efa, de ere begge en Vederstyggelighed for Herren.
11 Even a child makes himself known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.
Ogsaa af sine Gerninger kendes den unge, om han er ren, og om hans Gerning er ret.
12 The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, Jehovah has made even both of them.
Et Øre, som hører, og et Øje, som ser, ogsaa dem begge har Herren gjort.
13 Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty. Open thine eyes, and thou shall be satisfied with bread.
Elsk ikke Søvn, at du ikke skal blive fattig; slaa dine Øjne op, saa skal du mættes af Brød.
14 It is bad, it is bad, says the buyer, but when he is gone his way, then he boasts.
Det er slet! det er slet! siger Køberen; men naar han gaar bort, da roser han sig.
15 There is gold, and abundance of rubies, but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.
Der er Guld og mange Perler til; men Kundskabs Læber ere et dyrebart Kar.
16 Take his garment who is surety for a stranger, and hold him in pledge for foreigners.
Naar en gaar i Borgen for en fremmed, saa tag hans Klæder; og tag Pant af ham, naar det er for den ubekendte.
17 Bread of falsehood is sweet to a man, but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.
Brød, tjent ved Bedrag, smager en Mand vel; men siden bliver hans Mund fuld af Grus.
18 Every purpose is established by counsel, and by wise guidance make thou war.
Beslutninger efter Raadslagning bestaa; før da Krig efter fornuftig Ledelse!
19 He who goes about as a tale-bearer reveals secrets. Therefore do not associate with him who opens wide his lips.
Den, der gaar om som en Bagvadsker, aabenbarer Hemmeligheder; og indlad dig ikke med den, som er aabenmundet.
20 He who curses his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in blackness of darkness.
Hvo som bander sin Fader eller sin Moder, hans Lampe skal udslukkes midt i Mørket.
21 An inheritance gotten hastily at the beginning shall not be blessed in the end.
Den Arv, som man i Førstningen higer efter, den skal ikke velsignes paa det sidste.
22 Say thou not, I will recompense evil. Wait for Jehovah, and he will save thee.
Sig ikke: Jeg vil betale ondt; bi efter Herren, og han skal frelse dig.
23 Diverse weights are an abomination to Jehovah, and a false balance is not good.
To Slags Vægt er en Vederstyggelighed for Herren, og falske Vægtskaaler ere ikke gode.
24 A man's goings are of Jehovah, how then can man understand his way?
En Mands Gang er at Herren, og hvad forstaar et Menneske sig paa sin Vej?
25 It is a snare to a man to say rashly, It is holy. And to make inquiry after vows.
Det er Mennesket en Snare ubesindigt at sige: „Helligt!‟ og først efter Løfterne betænke det.
26 A wise king winnows the wicked, and brings the wheel over them.
En viis Konge udskiller de ugudelige og lader Hjulet gaa over dem.
27 The spirit of man is the lamp of Jehovah, searching all his innermost parts.
Menneskens Aand er en Lampe fra Herren; den ransager alle Lønkamre i hans Indre.
28 Kindness and truth preserve the king, and his throne is upheld by kindness.
Miskundhed og Sandhed bevare en Konge, og han støtter sin Trone ved Miskundhed.
29 The glory of young men is their strength, and the beauty of old men is the hoary head.
En Pryd for de unge er deres Kraft, og et Smykke for de gamle ere de graa Haar.
30 Stripes that wound cleanse away evil, and strokes, the innermost parts.
En Salvelse for den onde ere Striber af Saar og Slag, der trænge dybt ind i hans Krop.
