Proverbs 16
1 The plans of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from Jehovah.
Ihminen aikoo sydämessänsä; vaan Herralta tulee kielen vastaus.
2 All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes, but Jehovah weighs the spirits.
Jokaisen mielestä on hänen tiensä puhdas; mutta Herra tutkistelee sydämet.
3 Commit thy works to Jehovah, and thy purposes shall be established.
Anna Herran haltuun sinun työs, niin sinun aivoitukses menestyy.
4 Jehovah has made everything for its own end, yea, even the wicked for the day of evil.
Herra tekee kaikki itse tähtensä, niin myös jumalattoman pahaksi päiväksi.
5 Everyone who is proud in heart is an abomination to Jehovah. Hand in hand, he shall not be unpunished.
Jokainen ylpiä on Herralle kauhistus, ja ei pääse rankaisematta, ehkä he kaikki yhtä pitäisivät.
6 By mercy and truth iniquity is atoned for, and by the fear of Jehovah men depart from evil.
Laupiuden ja totuuden kautta pahateko sovitetaan, ja Herran pelvolla paha vältetään.
7 When a man's ways please Jehovah, he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.
Jos jonkun tiet ovat Herralle kelvolliset, niin hän myös kääntää hänen vihamiehensä rauhaan.
8 Better is a little, with righteousness, than great revenues with injustice.
Parempi on vähä vanhurskaudessa, kuin suuri saalis vääryydessä.
9 A man's heart devises his way, but Jehovah directs his steps.
Ihmisen sydän aikoo tiensä; vaan Herra johdattaa hänen käymisensä.
10 A divine sentence is in the lips of the king. His mouth shall not transgress in judgment.
Ennustus on kuninkaan huulissa: ei hänen suunsa puhu tuomiossa väärin.
11 A just balance and scales are Jehovah's. All the weights of the bag are his work.
Oikia puntari ja vaaka on Herralta, ja kaikki painokivet kukkarossa ovat hänen tekoansa.
12 It is an abomination to kings to commit wickedness, for the throne is established by righteousness.
Kuninkaan edessä on kauhistus väärin tehdä; sillä vanhurskaudella istuin vahvistetaan.
13 Righteous lips are the delight of kings, and they love him who speaks right.
Oikia neuvo on kuninkaalle otollinen; ja joka oikein puhuu, häntä rakastetaan.
14 The wrath of a king is messengers of death, but a wise man will pacify it.
Kuninkaan viha on kuoleman sanansaattaja; ja viisas mies lepyttää hänen.
15 In the light of the king's countenance is life, and his favor is as a cloud of the latter rain.
Kuin kuninkaan kasvo on leppyinen, siinä on elämä, ja hänen armonsa on niinkuin hiljainen sade.
16 How much better it is to get wisdom than gold! Yea, to get understanding is rather to be chosen than silver.
Ota viisautta tykös, sillä se on parempi kultaa: ja saada ymmärrystä on kalliimpi hopiaa.
17 The highway of the upright is to depart from evil. He who keeps his way preserves his soul.
Siviän tiet välttävät pahaa, ja joka sielunsa varjelee, se tiestänsä ottaa vaarin.
18 Pride is before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.
Joka alennetaan, se ensisti tulee ylpiäksi; ja ylpeys on aina lankeemuksen edellä.
19 Better it is to be of a lowly spirit with the poor, than to divide the spoil with the proud.
Parempi on nöyränä olla siveiden kanssa, kuin jakaa suurta saalista ylpeiden kanssa.
20 He who gives heed to the word shall find good, and whoever trusts in Jehovah, happy is he.
Joka jonkun asian viisaasti alkaa, hän löytää onnen; ja se on autuas, joka luottaa Herraan.
21 The wise in heart shall be called prudent, and the sweetness of the lips increases learning.
Toimellinen mies ylistetään viisautensa tähden; ja suloinen puhe lisää oppia.
22 Understanding is a well-spring of life to him who has it, but the correction of fools is folly.
Viisaus on elämän lähde hänelle, joka sen saanut on, vaan tyhmäin oppi on hulluus.
23 The heart of the wise instructs his mouth, and adds learning to his lips.
Viisas sydän puhuu toimellisesti, ja hänen huulensa opettavat hyvin.
24 Pleasant words are a honeycomb: Sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.
Suloiset sanat ovat mesileipää; ne lohduttavat sielua, ja virvoittavat luut.
25 There is a way which seems right to a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
Monella on tie mielestänsä oikia, vaan se johdattaa viimein kuolemaan.
26 The appetite of the laboring man labors for him, for his mouth urges him.
Moni tulee suureen vahinkoon oman suunsa kautta.
27 A worthless man devises mischief, and in his lips there is as a scorching fire.
Jumalatoin ihminen kaivaa onnettomuutta, ja hänen suussansa palaa niinkuin tuli.
28 A perverse man scatters abroad strife, and a whisperer separates chief friends.
Väärä ihminen saattaa riidan, ja panettelia tekee ruhtinaat eripuraisiksi.
29 A man of violence entices his neighbor, and leads him in a way that is not good.
Viekas ihminen houkuttelee lähimmäistänsä, ja johdattaa hänen pahalle tielle.
30 He who shuts his eyes devises perverse things. He who moves his lips brings evil to pass.
Joka silmää iskee, ei se hyvää ajattele, ja joka huuliansa pureskelee, se pahaa matkaan saattaa.
31 The hoary head is a crown of glory. It shall be found in the way of righteousness.
Harmaat hiukset ovat kunnian kruunu, joka löydetään vanhurskauden tiellä.
32 He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit, than he who takes a city.
Kärsivällinen on parempi kuin väkevä; ja joka hillitsee mielensä, on parempi, kuin se joka kaupungin voittaa.
33 The lot is cast into the lap, but the whole disposing thereof is of Jehovah.
Arpa heitetään syliin, vaan Herralta tulee kaikki sen meno.
