< Matthew 23 >
1 Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to his disciples, saying,
Then spoke Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,
2 The scholars and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat.
Saying The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat:
3 All things therefore, however many they may tell you to observe, observe and do, but do not ye according to their works, for they say, and do not.
All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not all of you after their works: for they say, and do not.
4 For they bind heavy burdens and difficult to bear, and lay them on men's shoulders, but they do not want to move them with their finger.
For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.
5 But all their works they do in order to be seen by men. And they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the hems of their garments.
But all their works they do in order to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
6 And they love the chief place at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
7 and the greetings in the marketplaces, and to be designated by men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
8 But be ye not designated Rabbi, for one is your leader, the Christ, and ye are all brothers.
But be not all of you called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all you are brethren.
9 And do not designate a father of you upon the earth, for one is your Father, he in the heavens.
And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
10 And be ye not designated leaders, for one is your leader, the Christ.
Neither be all of you called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.
11 But the greater of you will be your helper.
But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
12 And he who will exalt himself will be made low, and he who will make himself low will be exalted.
And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be brought low; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.
13 Woe to you, scholars and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because ye close up the kingdom of the heavens ahead of men. For ye enter not in, nor do ye allow those who are entering to enter in.
But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for all of you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for all of you neither go in yourselves, neither suffer all of you them that are entering to go in.
14 But woe to you, scholars and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because ye devour widows' houses, and praying long in pretence. Because of this ye will receive greater condemnation.
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for all of you devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore all of you shall receive the greater damnation.
15 Woe to you, scholars and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because ye encompass the sea and the land to make one proselyte, and when it happens, ye make him twice more a son of hell than yourselves. (Geenna )
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for all of you compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, all of you make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves. (Geenna )
16 Woe to you, ye blind guides, who say, Whoever may swear by the temple, it is nothing, but whoever may swear by the gold of the temple, he is obligated.
Woe unto you, all of you blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!
17 Ye foolish and blind men, for which is greater, the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred?
All of you fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that santifies the gold?
18 And, Whoever may swear by the altar, it is nothing, but whoever may swear by the gift upon it, he is obligated.
And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever swears by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.
19 Ye foolish and blind men, for which is greater, the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred?
All of you fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that santifies the gift?
20 He therefore who swears by the altar, swears by it, and by all things on it.
Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, swears by it, and by all things thereon.
21 And he who swears by the temple, swears by it, and by him who dwells in it.
And whoso shall swear by the temple, swears by it, and by him that dwells therein.
22 And he who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God, and by him who sits upon it.
And he that shall swear by heaven, swears by the throne of God, and by him that sits thereon.
23 Woe to you, scholars and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because ye tithe the mint and the anise and the cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law-justice and mercy and faith. These things must be done, and not neglecting those things.
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for all of you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought all of you to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
24 Ye blind guides, who strain out the gnat, and swallow the camel.
All of you blind guides, which strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel.
25 Woe to you, scholars and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because ye cleanse the outside of the cup and of the platter, but inside they are full of plunder and unrighteousness.
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for all of you make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.
26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first the inside of the cup and of the platter, so that the outside of them may also become clean.
You blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.
27 Woe to you, scholars and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because ye are like whitewashed tombs, which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for all of you are like unto whitewashed sepulchers, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.
28 In this way also, ye indeed outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside ye are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
Even so all of you also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within all of you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
29 Woe to you, scholars and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and adorn the sepulchers of the righteous,
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because all of you build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchers of the righteous,
30 and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
31 So then ye testify to yourselves that ye are sons of those who murdered the prophets.
Wherefore all of you be witnesses unto yourselves, that all of you are the children of them which killed the prophets.
32 Then fill ye up the measure of your fathers.
Fill all of you up then the measure of your fathers.
33 Ye serpents, ye offspring of vipers, how will ye escape from the damnation of hell? (Geenna )
All of you serpents, all of you generation of vipers, how can all of you escape the damnation of hell? (Geenna )
34 Because of this, behold, I send to you prophets, and wise men, and scholars. And some of them ye will kill and crucify, and some of them ye will scourge in your synagogues, and will persecute from city to city,
Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them all of you shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall all of you scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:
35 so that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zachariah son of Barachiah, whom ye murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.
That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom all of you slew between the temple and the altar.
36 Truly I say to you, that all these things will come upon this generation.
Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.
37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets, and stones those who have been sent to her. How often I wanted to gathered thy children together the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and ye would not.
O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you that kill the prophets, and stone them which are sent unto you, how often would I have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings, and all of you would not!
38 Behold, your house is left to you desolate.
Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.
39 For I say to you, ye will, no, not see me henceforth, until ye say, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
For I say unto you, All of you shall not see me henceforth, till all of you shall say, Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord.
