< Matthew 19 >
1 And it came to pass when Jesus had finished these sayings, he departed from Galilee and came into the regions of Judea beyond the Jordan.
And it came to pass when Jesus had finished these words, he departed from Galilee, and came into the borders of Judaea beyond Jordan;
2 And many multitudes followed him and he healed them there.
and great multitudes followed him; and he healed them there.
3 And Pharisees came to him, trying him, and saying to him, Is it permitted for a man to divorce his wife for every cause?
And there came unto him Pharisees, tempting him, and saying, Is it lawful [for a man] to put away his wife for every cause?
4 And having answered, he said to them, Have ye not read that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female,
And he answered and said, Have ye not read, that he which made [them] from the beginning made them male and female,
5 and said, For this reason a man will leave his father and mother behind, and will be bonded with his wife, and the two will be in one flesh?
and said, For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and the twain shall become one flesh?
6 So that they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, no man shall separate.
So that they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
7 They say to him, Why then did Moses command to give a writing of divorcement, and to divorce her?
They say unto him, Why then did Moses command to give a bill of divorcement, and to put [her] away?
8 He says to them, For your hard heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it did not happen this way.
He saith unto them, Moses for your hardness of heart suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it hath not been so.
9 And I say to you, that whoever may divorce his wife, not for fornication, and will marry another, commits adultery. And he who married her who has been divorced commits adultery.
And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and he that marrieth her when she is put away committeth adultery.
10 His disciples say to him, If the case of the man with his wife is this way, it is not advantageous to marry.
The disciples say unto him, If the case of the man is so with his wife, it is not expedient to marry.
11 But he said to them, Not all men can accommodate this saying, but to whom it has been given.
But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, but they to whom it is given.
12 For there are eunuchs who were born this way from their mother's belly, and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who made themselves eunuchs because of the kingdom of the heavens. He who is able to receive it, let him receive it.
For there are eunuchs, which were so born from their mother’s womb: and there are eunuchs, which were made eunuchs by men: and there are eunuchs, which made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.
13 Then children were brought to him, so that he would lay his hands on them and pray, but the disciples rebuked them.
Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should lay his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them.
14 But Jesus said, Allow the children, and do not forbid them to come to me, for of such kind is the kingdom of the heavens.
But Jesus said, Suffer the little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.
15 And having laid his hands on them, he departed from there.
And he laid his hands on them, and departed thence.
16 And behold one man having come to him, said, Good teacher, what good thing should I do so that I may have eternal life? (aiōnios )
And behold, one came to him and said, Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? (aiōnios )
17 And he said to him, Why do thou call me good? There is none good except one, God. But if thou want to enter into life, keep the commandments.
And he said unto him, Why askest thou me concerning that which is good? One there is who is good: but if thou wouldest enter into life, keep the commandments.
18 He says to him, Which? And Jesus said, Thou shall not murder. Thou shall not commit adultery. Thou shall not steal. Thou shall not testify falsely.
He saith unto him, Which? And Jesus said, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,
19 Honor the father and mother, and, Thou shall love thy neighbor as thyself.
Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
20 The young man says to him, All these things I have kept from my youthfulness. What do I lack yet?
The young man saith unto him, All these things have I observed: what lack I yet?
21 Jesus said to him, If thou want to be perfect, go, sell the things being possessed by thee, and give to the poor, and thou will have treasure in heaven. And come, follow me.
Jesus said unto him, If thou wouldest be perfect, go, sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.
22 But when the young man heard the saying, he went away sorrowing, for he was having many possessions.
But when the young man heard the saying, he went away sorrowful: for he was one that had great possessions.
23 And Jesus said to his disciples, Truly I say to you, that a rich man will enter into the kingdom of the heavens difficultly.
And Jesus said unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, It is hard for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven.
24 And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to pass through the hole of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through a needle’s eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
25 And when his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved?
And when the disciples heard it, they were astonished exceedingly, saying, Who then can be saved?
26 And having looked, Jesus said to them, With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.
And Jesus looking upon [them] said to them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.
27 Then having answered, Peter said to him, Lo, we have forsaken all, and followed thee. What then will be for us?
Then answered Peter and said unto him, Lo, we have left all, and followed thee; what then shall we have?
28 And Jesus said to them, Truly I say to you, that ye who have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man will sit on the throne of his glory, ye also will sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, that ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit on the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
29 And every man who has forsaken houses, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, because of my name, will receive a hundredfold, and will inherit eternal life. (aiōnios )
And every one that hath left houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and shall inherit eternal life. (aiōnios )
30 But many first will be last, and last, first.
But many shall be last [that are] first; and first [that are] last.
