John 8
1 But Jesus went to the mount of Olives.
(Quant à Jésus, il alla au mont des Oliviers.)
2 And at early morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came to him. And having sat down, he taught them.
Au point du jour, il revint au Temple. Tout le peuple accourait à lui. Jésus s'était assis et enseignait,
3 And the scholars and the Pharisees bring to him a woman taken in adultery. And having stood her in the midst,
lorsque les Scribes et les Pharisiens lui amenèrent une femme qu'on avait surprise en adultère et la placèrent au milieu de tout le monde.
4 tempting, they say to him, Teacher, we found this woman committing adultery, in the act.
«Maître, dirent-ils à Jésus, cette femme a été saisie en flagrant délit d'adultère.
5 Now in the law, Moses commanded us such women are to be stoned. What therefore do thou say about her?
Or, dans la Loi, Moïse [nous] a ordonné de lapider ces femmes-là. Et toi, quel est ton avis?»
6 But they said this, trying him, so that they might have an accusation against him. But Jesus having stooped down, wrote on the ground with his finger, not pretending.
Ils parlaient ainsi pour le mettre à l'épreuve et avoir un prétexte à accusation.] Quant à Jésus, il s'était baissé et il écrivait sur le sol avec son doigt.
7 And when they continued asking him, after standing erect, he said to them, Let the innocent man of you first cast the stone at her.
Ceux qui l'interrogeaient ayant persisté, il se releva et [leur] dit: «Que celui d'entre vous qui est sans péché lui jette la pierre le premier.»
8 And again having stooped down, he wrote on the ground.
Puis se penchant de nouveau, il continua d'écrire sur le sol.
9 And they, having heard and being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, having begun from the elder until the last. And Jesus was left behind alone, and the woman being in the midst.
Mais, en entendant cette réponse, ils sortirent un à un, à commencer par les plus âgés. Et [Jésus] resta seul avec la femme, toujours là, au milieu.
10 And Jesus, after standing erect, and having seen no man but the woman, he said to her, Woman, where are those accusers of thee? Did no man condemn thee?
Alors il se leva et lui dit: «Femme, où sont-ils [tes accusateurs]? Est-ce qu'aucun ne t'a condamnée?» — «Aucun. Seigneur», répondit-elle.
11 And she said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said to her, Neither do I condemn thee. Go, and henceforth sin no more.
Jésus lui dit: «Moi non plus je ne te condamne pas. Va et [désormais] ne pèche plus!»)
12 Again therefore Jesus spoke to them, saying, I am the light of the world. He who follows me would, no, not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.
Jésus leur parla de nouveau disant: «Je suis la lumière du, monde. Qui me suit ne marchera pas dans les ténèbres; mais il aura la lumière de la vie.»
13 The Pharisees therefore said to him, Thou testify about thyself. Thy testimony is not valid.
Alors les Pharisiens lui dirent: «C'est toi-même qui témoignes de toi-même, ton témoignage n'est pas valable.»
14 Jesus answered and said to them, Even if I might testify about myself, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I go, but ye do not know where I come from and where I go.
Jésus leur répondit par ces paroles: «Bien que je sois à moi-même mon propre témoin, mon témoignage est valable, parce que je sais d'où je suis venu et où je vais. Vous, vous ne savez ni d'où je viens, ni où je vais.
15 Ye judge according to the flesh. I judge no man.
Vous, vous jugez selon la chair, moi, je ne juge personne.
16 But even if I judge, my judgment is valid, because I am not alone, but I and the Father who sent me.
Et s'il m'arrive de juger, mon jugement est véritable, parce que je ne suis pas seul, mais avec moi est le Père qui m'a envoyé,
17 And also it is written in your law that the testimony of two men is valid.
et il est écrit dans votre Loi que le témoignage de deux personnes est valable.
18 I am he who testifies about myself, and the Father who sent me testifies about me.
Or il y a moi qui me rends témoignage à moi-même, et il y a le Père qui m'a envoyé, et qui, lui aussi, me rend témoignage.» —
19 They said therefore to him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye know neither me, nor my Father. If ye had known me, ye would have known my Father also.
«Ton père, lui disaient-ils alors, où est-il?» — «Vous ne connaissez ni moi, ni mon Père, répondit Jésus; si vous me connaissiez, vous connaîtriez également mon Père.»
20 Jesus spoke these sayings in the treasury as he taught in the temple, and no man seized him, because his hour had not yet come.
Il prononça ces paroles dans le Trésor, lorsqu'il enseignait au Temple. Personne ne l'arrêta, parce que son heure n'était pas encore venue.
21 Jesus therefore again said to them, I go, and ye will seek me, and ye will die in your sin. Where I go, ye cannot come.
Il leur dit encore: «Je m'en vais; vous me chercherez et vous, mourrez dans votre péché. Au lieu où je vais, vous ne pouvez venir.» —
22 The Jews therefore said, Will he kill himself, because he says, Where I go, ye cannot come?
«Est-ce qu'il se donnera la mort; se demandaient les Juifs, puisqu'il dit: «Au lieu où je vais, vous ne pouvez venir!»
23 And he said to them, Ye are from below, I am from above. Ye are of this world, I am not of this world.
Jésus reprit: «Vous, vous êtes d'en bas; moi, je suis d'en haut; Vous, vous êtes de ce monde; moi, je ne suis pas de ce monde.
24 I said therefore to you that ye will die in your sins. For unless ye believe that I am he, ye will die in your sins.
Aussi vous ai-je dit que vous mourrez dans vos péchés; car si vous ne croyez pas que c'est moi vous mourrez dans vos péchés.»
25 They said therefore to him, Who are thou? And Jesus said to them, The beginning, something that I am even telling you.
«Qui donc es-tu?» demandèrent-ils. Jésus leur répondit: «Avant tout, je suis ce que je vous dis.
26 I have many things to say and to judge about you. But he who sent me is true, and I speak to the world these things that I heard from him.
J'ai, sur vous, beaucoup à dire, j'ai beaucoup à juger, mais Celui qui m'a envoyé est véridique, et ce que j'ai entendu auprès de lui, je le proclame dans le monde.»
27 They did not understand that he spoke the Father to them.
Comme ils ne comprenaient pas qu'il leur parlait du Père,
28 Jesus therefore said to them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then ye will know that I am he, and I do nothing from myself, but I speak these things as my Father taught me.
il ajouta: «Quand vous aurez élevé le Fils de l'homme, alors vous reconnaîtrez que c'est moi vous reconnaîtrez que je ne fais rien de moi-même, mais que je parle d'après les enseignements du Père.
29 And he who sent me is with me. The Father has not left me alone, because I always do things pleasing to him.
Celui qui m'a envoyé est avec moi; il ne m'a pas laissé seul, parce que je fais toujours ce qui lui est agréable.»
30 As he spoke these things of him, many believed in him.
Pendant qu'il parlait ainsi, plusieurs crurent en lui.
31 Jesus therefore said to those Jews who believed him, If ye remain in my word, ye are truly my disciples,
Or, à ces Juifs qui avaient eu foi en lui, Jésus disait: «Si vous demeurez dans ma parole, vous êtes véritablement mes disciples;
32 and ye will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.
vous connaîtrez la vérité et la vérité vous rendra libres.»
33 They answered to him, We are Abraham's seed, and have been in bondage to no man, ever. How can thou say, Ye will become free?
Ils lui répliquèrent: «Nous sommes du sang d'Abraham et nous n'avons jamais été les esclaves de qui que ce soit. Comment dis-tu: «Vous deviendrez libres.»
34 Jesus answered them, Truly, truly, I say to you, that every man who does the sin is a bondman of the sin.
Jésus leur répondit: «En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, quiconque commet le péché est l'esclave du péché;
35 And the bondman does not remain in the house into the age. The Son remains into the age. (aiōn g165)
or ce n'est pas pour toujours que l'esclave demeure dans la maison, le Fils y demeure toujours; (aiōn g165)
36 If therefore the Son should make you free, ye will truly be free.
si donc le Fils vous affranchit, vous serez véritablement libres.
37 I know that ye are Abraham's seed, yet ye seek to kill me, because my word has no place in you.
Je sais que vous êtes de la descendance d'Abraham; mais, parce que ma parole n'a pas prise sur vous, vous cherchez à me faire périr.
38 I speak what I have seen from my Father, and ye therefore do what ye have seen from your father.
Ce que j'ai vu auprès du Père, moi, je le dis; ce que vous avez appris de votre père, vous, vous le faites.»
39 They answered and said to him, Abraham is our father. Jesus says to them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham.
Ils répondirent par ces paroles: «Notre père à nous, c'est Abraham.» «Si vous étiez enfants d'Abraham, leur dit Jésus, vous feriez les oeuvres d'Abraham;
40 But now ye seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do this.
au lieu de cela, vous cherchez à me mettre à mort, moi, un homme qui vous ai dit la vérité, que j'ai entendue auprès de Dieu. Cela, Abraham ne l'a pas fait.
41 Ye do the works of your father. They said therefore to him, We were not begotten from fornication. We have one Father, God.
Vous, vous faites les oeuvres de votre père.» «Nous ne sommes pas le produit de quelque fornication, répliquèrent-ils, nous avons un seul Père: Dieu.»
42 Therefore Jesus said to them, If God were your Father, ye would love me, for I came forth and have come from God. For, neither have I come for myself, but he sent me.
«Si Dieu était votre Père, reprit Jésus, vous m'aimeriez! car de Dieu je suis sorti et je viens; ce n'est pas, en effet, de moi-même que je suis venu; mais c'est lui qui m'a envoyé.
43 Why do ye not understand my speech? Because ye cannot hear my word.
Pourquoi ne reconnaissez-vous pas mon langage? parce que vous ne pouvez entendre s ma parole.
44 Ye are from the father, the devil, and ye want to do the desires of your father. He was a man-killer from the beginning, and he has not stood in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own, because he is a liar, and the father of it.
Vous avez le diable pour père, et c'est aux convoitises de votre père que vous voulez obéir. Dès le commencement, celui-là fut homicide, et il ne se tient pas dans la vérité, parce qu'il n'y a point de vérité en lui. Quand il profère le mensonge, il parle de son propre fond, étant menteur et père du mensonge.
45 And I, because I speak the truth, ye do not believe me.
Quant à moi, c'est parce que je dis la vérité que vous ne me croyez pas.
46 Which of you convicts me about sin? And if I speak truth, why do ye not believe me?
Qui de vous me convaincra de péché? Si je dis la vérité, pourquoi ne me croyez-vous pas?
47 He who is of God hears the sayings of God. Because of this ye do not hear, because ye are not of God.
Celui qui est de Dieu, entend les paroles de Dieu. Voici pourquoi vous, vous n'entendez pas: c'est que vous n'êtes pas de Dieu.»
48 Therefore the Jews answered and said to him, Do we not say well that thou are a Samaritan, and have a demon?
Les Juifs lui répondirent par ces paroles: «N'avons-nous pas raison de dire que tu es un Samaritain et un possédé du démon?»
49 Jesus answered, I have no demon, but I honor my Father, and ye dishonor me.
«Je ne suis pas un possédé du démon, répliqua Jésus, mais j'honore mon Père, et vous, vous me déshonorez.
50 But I seek not my own glory. He is who seeks and judges.
Pour moi, je ne cherche pas ma gloire; il est quelqu'un qui la cherche et qui juge.
51 Truly, truly, I say to you, if any man keeps my word, he will, no, not see death, into the age. (aiōn g165)
En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, si quelqu'un garde ma parole, il ne verra jamais la mort.» (aiōn g165)
52 The Jews therefore said to him, Now we know that thou have a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets, and thou say, If any man keeps my word, he will, no, not taste of death, into the age. (aiōn g165)
Nous sommes maintenant convaincus, lui dirent les Juifs, que tu es possédé du démon. Abraham est mort ainsi que les prophètes, et toi, tu dis: «Si quelqu'un garde ma parole, il ne goûtera jamais la mort.» (aiōn g165)
53 Are thou greater than our father Abraham who died? And the prophets died. Who do thou make thyself?
Es-tu plus grand que notre père Abraham qui est mort? que les prophètes, qui sont morts? Qui prétends-tu être?»
54 Jesus answered, If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. My Father is he who glorifies me, of whom ye say, He is our God.
Jésus répondit: «Si je me glorifie moi-même, ma gloire n'est rien. C'est mon Père qui me glorifie, mon Père dont vous dites qu'il est votre Dieu
55 And ye do not know him, but I know him. And if I should say that I do not know him, I will be a liar like you, but I do know him and keep his word.
et que vous ne connaissez pas; pour moi, je le connais entièrement. Et si je disais que je ne le connais pas entièrement, je serais comme vous, un menteur; mais je le connais entièrement et je garde sa parole.
56 Your father Abraham rejoiced that he could see my day, and he saw it, and was glad.
Abraham votre père a tressailli de joie dans l'espoir de voir mon jour; il l'a vu et il a été dans la joie.»
57 The Jews therefore said to him, Thou have not yet fifty years, and thou have seen Abraham?
«Tu n'as pas encore cinquante ans, repartirent les Juifs, et tu as vu Abraham!»
58 Jesus said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham came to be, I am.
Jésus leur dit: «En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, avant qu'Abraham fût, moi, je suis.»
59 Therefore they took up stones so that they might throw at him, but Jesus was hid, and went out of the temple, having passed through the midst of them, and thus passed on.
Alors ils prirent des pierres pour les lui jeter; mais Jésus se cacha et sortit du Temple.
