John 5
1 After these things there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
Après cela, vint une fête des Juifs et Jésus monta à Jérusalem.
2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the place pertaining to sheep, a pool, which is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porches.
Or, il s'y trouve près de la Porte-des-Brebis une piscine (le mot hébreu est Bethzatha); elle a cinq portiques
3 In these lay a great multitude of those who are feeble, blind, lame, withered, waiting for the movement of the water.
sous lesquels étaient étendus une multitude de malades: aveugles, estropiés, perclus. (Ils attendaient l'agitation de l'eau; )
4 For an agent went down at a certain time into the pool, and agitated the water. Therefore the first man who stepped in after the agitation of the water became well from whatever affliction he had.
(à certains moments, en effet, un ange descendait dans la piscine et mettait l'eau en mouvement, et le premier qui entrait dans la piscine après ce bouillonnement de l'eau était guéri, quelle que fût sa maladie.)
5 And a certain man was there who was thirty-eight years in the weakness.
Il y avait là un homme dont la maladie remontait à trente-huit ans.
6 When Jesus saw this man lying down, and knew that he fares now a long time, he says to him, Do thou desire to become well?
Le voyant couché et sachant qu'il était là depuis longtemps, Jésus lui dit: «Veux-tu être guéri?» —
7 The infirmed man answered him, Sir, I have no man so that when the water is agitated he might put me into the pool, but while I am coming another steps down before me.
«Seigneur, lui répondit le malade, je n'ai personne pour me jeter dans la piscine lorsque l'eau vient à bouillonner. Pendant que j'y vais, un autre y descend avant moi.»
8 Jesus says to him, Arise, take up thy bed and walk.
Jésus lui dit: «Lève-toi, prends ton grabat et marche.»
9 And straightaway the man became well, and took up his bed and walked. Now it was sabbath on that day.
Cet homme fut immédiatement guéri; il prit son grabat; il marchait. Or ceci se passait en un jour de sabbat.
10 The Jews therefore said to the man who was cured, It is sabbath. It is not permitted for thee to take up the bed.
Alors les Juifs s'adressèrent à l'homme guéri: «C'est le jour du sabbat; il ne t'est point permis d'emporter ce grabat.»
11 He answered them, The man who made me well, that man said to me, Take up thy bed and walk.
Il leur répliqua: «Celui-là même qui m'a guéri m'a dit: «Prends ton grabat et marche.» —
12 Therefore they asked him, Who is the man who said to thee, Take up thy bed and walk?
«Quel est cet homme, lui demandèrent-ils, qui t'a dit de le prendre et de marcher?»
13 But the man who was healed had not known who he is, for Jesus withdrew, a multitude being in the place.
Mais l'homme guéri ne savait pas qui c'était; Jésus, d'ailleurs, s'était retiré parce qu'il y avait foule en ce lieu.
14 After these things Jesus finds him in the temple, and said to him, Behold, thou have become well. Sin no more, lest something worse may happen to thee.
Quelque temps après Jésus rencontra cet homme dans le Temple et lui dit: «Te voilà guéri; ne pèche plus de peur qu'il ne t'arrive quelque chose de pire.»
15 The man departed and reported to the Jews that Jesus is the man who made him well.
Cet homme s'en alla dire aux Juifs que c'était Jésus qui l'avait guéri.
16 And because of this the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill him, because he did these things on a sabbath.
Et c'est parce que Jésus agissait de la sorte le jour du sabbat, c'est pour cela même que les Juifs le poursuivaient.
17 But Jesus answered them, My Father works until now and I work.
Mais lui, il leur dit: «Mon Père jusqu'à présent agit, et moi aussi j'agis.»
18 Because of this therefore the Jews sought even more to kill him, because not only did he relax the sabbath, but also he called God his own Father, making himself equal to God.
Là-dessus, les Juifs cherchaient d'autant plus à le faire mourir; non seulement parce qu'il annulait le sabbat, mais parce qu'en outre il disait que Dieu était son propre Père, se faisant l'égal de Dieu.
19 Jesus therefore answered and said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of himself, except what he sees the Father doing. For whatever he may do, the Son also does these things in like manner.
Jésus alors leur adressa ces paroles: «En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, le Fils ne peut rien faire de lui-même; il ne fait que ce qu'il voit faire au Père. En effet, tout ce que le Père fait, le Fils aussi le fait également;
20 For the Father loves the Son, and shows him all things that he himself does. And he will show him works greater than these, so that ye may marvel.
car le Père aime le Fils et lui montre tout ce qu'il fait; et il lui montrera des oeuvres plus grandes que celles-ci, pour que vous soyez remplis d'admiration.
21 For as the Father raises up the dead and makes alive, so also the Son makes alive whom he will.
De même, en effet, que le Père ressuscite les morts et vivifie, de, même le Fils vivifie qui il veut.
22 For neither does the Father judge any man, but he has given all judgment to the Son,
Car le Père ne juge qui que ce soit; mais il a remis au Fils tout le jugement
23 so that all would honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. The man not honoring the Son, does not honor the Father who sent him.
afin que tous honorent le Fils comme ils honorent le Père. Celui qui n'honore pas le Fils n'honore pas le Père qui l'a envoyé.»
24 Truly, truly, I say to you, that he who hears my word, and believes him who sent me, has eternal life. And he does not come into condemnation, but has passed from death into life. (aiōnios g166)
«En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, celui qui écoute ma parole et croit à Celui qui m'a envoyé, possède une vie éternelle et ne comparaît point en jugement: de la mort il est passé à la vie. (aiōnios g166)
25 Truly, truly, I say to you, that an hour comes, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.
En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, il vient une heure, et elle est déjà venue, où les morts entendront la voix du Fils de Dieu, et ceux qui l'auront entendue vivront.
26 For as the Father has life in himself, so also he gave to the Son to have life in himself.
Car, comme le Père a la vie en soi, ainsi il a donné au Fils d'avoir la vie en soi,
27 And he also gave him authority to execute judgment because he is a son of man.
et il lui a donné la puissance d'exercer un jugement, parce qu'il est fils d'homme.
28 Marvel not at this, because an hour comes in which all those in the sepulchers will hear his voice,
Ne vous étonnez pas de cela; car il vient une heure où tous ceux qui sont dans les sépulcres entendront sa voix,
29 and will come forth, those who have done right to a resurrection of life, and those who have practiced wrong to a resurrection of judgment.
et en sortiront; ceux qui auront fait le bien ressusciteront pour vivre, et ceux qui auront fait le mal ressusciteront pour être jugés.»
30 I can from myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge. And my judgment is righteous because I seek not my will, but the will of the Father who sent me.
«Je ne puis, moi, rien faire de moi-même; comme j'entends, je juge, et mon jugement est juste, parce que je ne cherche pas ma volonté, mais la volonté de Celui qui m'a envoyé.»
31 If I testify about myself, my witness is not valid.
«Si c'est moi qui me rends témoignage à moi-même, mon témoignage n'est pas véridique.
32 There is another who testifies about me, and I know that the testimony that he testifies about me is valid.
Il en est un autre qui me rend témoignage, et le témoignage qu'il me rend est, je le sais, véridique.»
33 Ye have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth.
«Vous vous êtes adressés à Jean, et il a rendu témoignage à la vérité.
34 But I do not take the testimony from man. However, I say these things, so that ye may be saved.
Quant à moi, ce n'est pas le témoignage qui vient d'un homme que j'accepte, mais j'en parle afin que vous soyez sauvés.
35 That man was the lamp that burns and shines, and ye were willing to rejoice for an hour in his light.
Il était lui le flambeau qui brûle et qui brille et, à sa clarté, vous vous êtes plu un moment à vous réjouir.»
36 But I have testimony greater than of John, for the works that the Father has given me so that I might complete them, the same works that I do, they testify about me that the Father has sent me.
«Quant à moi, j'ai le témoignage qui est plus grand que celui de Jean; car j'ai les oeuvres que le Père m'a donné d'accomplir; ce sont ces oeuvres mêmes, celles que je fais, qui rendent témoignage de moi et attestent que le Père m'a envoyé.»
37 And the Father, he who sent me, has testified about me. Ye have neither heard his voice, nor have ever seen his appearance.
«De plus, le Père qui m'a envoyé a, lui aussi, rendu témoignage de moi. Vous n'avez jamais ni écouté sa voix ni contemplé sa face,
38 And ye have not his word dwelling in you, because ye do not believe that man whom he sent for this.
et sa parole vous ne l'avez pas demeurant en vous, puisque vous ne croyez pas à celui qu'Il a envoyé.»
39 Ye search the scriptures, because ye think to have eternal life in them, and those are testifying about me. (aiōnios g166)
«Vous scrutez les Écritures, parce que vous pensez y trouver la vie éternelle, et elles aussi, elles me rendent témoignage.» (aiōnios g166)
40 And ye will not come to me, so that ye may have life.
«Et vous ne voulez pas venir à moi pour avoir la vie!»
41 I do not receive glory from men.
«La gloire qui vient des hommes, je ne l'accepte pas;
42 But I know you, that ye have not the love of God within yourselves.
mais je vous connais pour n'avoir pas l'amour de Dieu en vous:
43 I have come in my Father's name, and ye do not accept me. If another man should come in his own name, ye will accept that man.
moi, qui suis venu au nom de mon Père, vous ne me recevez pas! Qu'un autre se présente en son propre nom, et vous le recevrez!»
44 How can ye believe, who receive glory from each other, and seek not the glory from the only God?
«Comment pourriez-vous croire, vous qui recevez votre gloire les uns des autres et ne recherchez pas la gloire qui vient de Dieu seul?
45 Think not that I will accuse you to the Father. The man who accuses you is Moses, in whom ye have hoped.
Ne pensez pas que, devant le Père, ce soit moi qui vous accuserai. Votre accusateur c'est Moïse en qui vous mettez votre espoir.
46 For if ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me, for that man wrote about me.
Car si vous croyiez à Moïse, vous croiriez à moi-même; en effet, c'est de moi que parlent ses écrits;
47 But if ye believe not the writings of that man, how will ye believe my sayings?
mais si vous ne croyez pas à ce qu'il a écrit, comment croirez-vous à mes paroles?»
