John 12
1 Therefore six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany where Lazarus was, the man who died whom he raised from the dead.
Six jours avant la Pâque, Jésus vint à Béthanie, où était Lazare, qu'il avait ressuscité des morts.
2 So they made a supper for him there, and Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those who sat dining with him.
On lui fit là un festin et Marthe servait; Lazare était un de ceux qui étaient à table avec lui.
3 Mary therefore, after taking a pound of ointment of very costly genuine spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled of the aroma of the ointment.
Quant à Marie, elle prit une livre d'un parfum de nard pur, de très haut prix, et elle en oignit les pieds de Jésus, les essuyant avec ses cheveux. La maison fut remplie de l'odeur de ce parfum.
4 Therefore one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, the man who was going to betray him, says,
L'un des disciples, Judas l'Iskariôte, celui qui devait le livrer,
5 Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii, and given to the poor?
dit: «Pourquoi ne pas avoir vendu ce parfum? Il vaut trois cents deniers qu'on aurait donnés à des pauvres.»
6 Now he said this, not because it was a concern to him about the poor, but because he was a thief, and he had the purse and removed things that were put in.
Il ne parlait pas ainsi, parce qu'il se souciait des pauvres, mais parce qu'il était un voleur, et que, tenant la bourse commune, il se chargeait de ce qu'on y mettait.
7 Jesus therefore said, Let her alone. She has keep it for the day of my burial.
Jésus répondit: «Laisse-la, afin qu'elle réserve ce parfum pour le jour de ma sépulture.
8 For ye always have the poor with you, but ye do not always have me.
Les pauvres, vous les avez toujours avec vous; tandis que moi vous ne m'avez pas pour toujours.»
9 Therefore a great multitude of the Jews knew that he is there. And they came, not only because of Jesus, but that they might also see Lazarus whom he had raised from the dead.
Une foule énorme de Juifs avaient appris la présence de Jésus, et ils arrivèrent non seulement à cause de lui, mais aussi pour voir Lazare qu'il avait ressuscité des morts.
10 But the chief priests decided that they should kill Lazarus also,
Aussi les chefs des prêtres songèrent-ils à faire périr Lazare lui-même,
11 since because of him many of the Jews were going and were believing in Jesus.
parce qu'une quantité de Juifs les abandonnaient à cause de cet homme, et croyaient en Jésus.
12 On the morrow a great multitude having come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
Le lendemain une multitude immense, venue pour la fête, ayant appris que Jésus venait à Jérusalem
13 took the branches of the palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried out, Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, the King of Israel!
prit en main des branches de palmier et sortit au-devant de lui. «Hosanna!«» criait-on, «Béni soit celui qui vient au nom du Seigneur» Béni soit le roi d'Israël!»
14 And Jesus, having found a young donkey, sat on it, as it is written,
Jésus trouva un ânon et s'assit dessus, accomplissant cette parole de l'Écriture:
15 Fear not, daughter of Zion. Behold, thy King comes, sitting on a donkey's colt.
«Sois sans crainte, fille de Sion, Voici ton Roi qui t'arrive Assis sur le petit d'une ânesse.»
16 Now his disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these were things written because of him, and they did these things to him.
Ses disciples, tout d'abord, ne s'en rendirent point compte. Mais quand Jésus eut été glorifié, ils se souvinrent que ces choses avaient été écrites de lui, et qu'ils les lui avaient faites.
17 Therefore the multitude, the one that was with him when he called Lazarus from the sepulcher, and raised him from the dead, testified.
La multitude qui était avec lui attestait donc qu'il avait appelé Lazare du tombeau et l'avait ressuscité des morts;
18 Also because of this the multitude met him, because they heard of him doing this sign.
et c'était la rumeur d'un tel miracle, opéré par lui, qui faisait aussi accourir la foule à sa rencontre.
19 The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Do ye see that ye accomplish nothing. Behold, the world has gone after him.
Quant aux Pharisiens, ils se disaient entre eux: «Vous le voyez! Vous n'y gagnez rien! Voilà que tout le monde court après lui!»
20 Now some Greeks were from those who came up so that they might worship at the feast.
Parmi ceux qui étaient venus pour adorer Dieu pendant la fête, se trouvaient quelques Grecs.
21 These men therefore came to Philip, the man from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, Sir, we want to see Jesus.
Ils abordèrent Philippe qui était de Bethsaïde en Galilée, et lui firent cette demande: «Seigneur, nous désirons voir Jésus.»
22 Philip comes and tells Andrew, and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus.
Philippe alla en parler à André; et tous deux ensemble allèrent le dire à Jésus.
23 And Jesus answered them saying, The hour has come that the Son of man should be glorified.
Celui-ci leur adressa alors ces paroles: «L'heure est venue où le Fils de l'homme doit être glorifié.»
24 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless the grain of wheat that falls into the ground dies, it remains alone, but if it dies it bears much fruit.
«En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, si le grain de froment tombant en terre ne passe par la mort, il demeure seul; mais qu'il vienne à mourir, il porte beaucoup de fruits.»
25 He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. (aiōnios g166)
«Qui aime sa vie la perdra; et qui hait sa vie en ce monde, la conservera en vie éternelle.» (aiōnios g166)
26 If any man serves me, let him follow me, and where I am, there my helper will also be. And if any man serves me, the Father will honor him.
«Qu'il me suive, celui qui veut me servir! et là où je suis mon serviteur sera aussi. Si quelqu'un me sert, mon Père l'honorera.»
27 Now is my soul troubled, and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour. But because of this I came to this hour.
«Maintenant mon âme est troublée; et que dirai-je? Dirai-je: «Père, préserve-moi de cette heure?» mais, c'est pour cela que je suis arrivé à cette heure!
28 Father, glorify thy name. A voice therefore came out of heaven, saying, I both glorified it, and I will glorify again.
Père, glorifie ton nom!» Du ciel il vint alors une voix: «Je l'ai glorifié et je le glorifierai encore!» —
29 The multitude therefore that stood by and heard, said thunder occurred, others said, An agent has spoken to him.
«C'est le tonnerre», dit la foule qui était présente et qui entendait. Il y en avait qui disaient: «C'est un ange qui lui a parlé.»
30 Jesus answered and said, This voice occurred not for my sake, but for your sakes.
Jésus reprit ainsi: «Ce n'est pas pour moi, mais pour vous que cette voix a retenti.
31 Now is the judgment of this world. Now the ruler of this world will be cast out.
Maintenant a lieu le jugement de ce monde; maintenant le prince de ce monde va être chassé dehors;
32 And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw all men to myself.
et moi, quand j'aurai été élevé de terre, j'attirerai tous les hommes à moi.»
33 And he said this, signifying by what death he was going to die.
Il disait cela pour indiquer de quelle mort il allait mourir.
34 The multitude answered him, We have heard from the law that the Christ remains into the age. And how can thou say, The Son of man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of man? (aiōn g165)
«La Loi nous apprend que le Christ demeure éternellement, lui répondit la foule; comment donc dis-tu: «Il faut que le Fils de l'homme soit élevé de terre?» Quel est ce «Fils de l'homme»? (aiōn g165)
35 Jesus therefore said to them, Yet a little time the light is with you. Walk while ye have the light, so that darkness may not overcome you. And he who walks in the darkness knows not where he is going.
Jésus leur répondit: «Pour un peu de temps encore la lumière est avec vous. Marchez pendant que vous avez la lumière, de peur que les ténèbres ne vous surprennent. Celui qui marche dans les ténèbres ne sait où il va.
36 While ye have the light, believe in the light, so that ye may become sons of light. Jesus spoke these things, and after departing, he was hid from them.
Pendant que vous avez la lumière, ayez foi en la lumière, afin de devenir des fils de lumière.» Ainsi parla Jésus, puis il s'éloigna et se cacha d'eux.
37 But although having done so many signs before them, they did not believe in him,
Ils ne croyaient pas en lui qui avait fait tant de miracles en leur présence;
38 so that the word of Isaiah the prophet that he spoke might be fulfilled: Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
c'était afin que fût accomplie la parole du prophète Ésaïe qui a dit: «Seigneur, qui a cru à ce que nous faisons entendre? Et à qui le bras du Seigneur a-t-il été révélé?»
39 Because of this they could not believe. Because Isaiah said again,
Aussi bien, croire leur était impossible, puisque Ésaïe a dit encore:
40 He has blinded their eyes, and has hardened their heart, so that they would not see with their eyes, and understand with their heart, and be turned, and I would heal them.
«Il a aveuglé leurs yeux Et il a endurci leur coeur, Afin qu'ils ne voient pas de leurs yeux; Et qu'ils ne comprennent pas de leur coeur; Qu'ils ne se convertissent pas Et que je ne les guérisse pas.»
41 Isaiah said these things when he saw his glory, and spoke about him.
Voilà ce qu'a dit Ésaïe quand il a vu sa gloire et qu'il a parlé de lui.
42 Yet, nevertheless, even many of the rulers believed in him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess, so that they would not become excommunicated from the synagogue,
Et pourtant, même parmi ceux qui exerçaient l'autorité, beaucoup avaient foi en lui; mais, à cause des Pharisiens, ils n'en convenaient pas, pour ne pas être chassés de la synagogue,
43 for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.
préférant en cela la gloire humaine à la gloire de Dieu.
44 And Jesus cried out and said, He who believes in me, believes not in me, but in him who sent me.
Jésus éleva la voix: «Qui croit en moi, s'écria-t-il, ne croit pas en moi, mais en Celui qui m'a envoyé,
45 And he who sees me sees him who sent me.
et qui me voit, voit Celui qui m'a envoyé.
46 I have come a light into the world, so that every man who believes in me may not remain in the darkness.
Moi, qui suis lumière, je suis venu dans le monde afin que quiconque croit en moi ne demeure point dans les ténèbres.
47 And if any man hears my sayings, and will not believe, I do not judge him, for I came not so that I might judge the world, but that I might save the world.
Quant à celui qui entend mes paroles et ne les garde point, ce n'est pas moi qui le juge; car je ne suis pas venu pour juger le monde; mais pour sauver le monde.
48 He who rejects me and does not receive my sayings, has that which judges him: the word that I spoke, that will judge him in the last day.
Qui me rejette et ne reçoit pas mes paroles a déjà son juge; ce juge, c'est la parole même que j'ai dite, elle le jugera au dernier jour.
49 Because I spoke not from myself, but the Father who sent me, he gave me commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.
Ce n'est pas, en effet, de moi-même que j'ai parlé; mais c'est le Père, dont je suis l'envoyé, qui m'a lui-même commandé de parler et qui m'a prescrit ce que j'avais à dire.
