Job 1
1 There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job, and that man was perfect and upright, and one who feared God, and turned away from evil.
ウヅの地にヨブという名の人があった。そのひととなりは全く、かつ正しく、神を恐れ、悪に遠ざかった。
2 And there were born to him seven sons and three daughters.
彼に男の子七人と女の子三人があり、
3 His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she-donkeys, and a very great household, so that this man was the greatest of all the sons of the east.
その家畜は羊七千頭、らくだ三千頭、牛五百くびき、雌ろば五百頭で、しもべも非常に多く、この人は東の人々のうちで最も大いなる者であった。
4 And his sons went and held a feast in the house of each one upon his day, and they sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.
そのむすこたちは、めいめい自分の日に、自分の家でふるまいを設け、その三人の姉妹をも招いて一緒に食い飲みするのを常とした。
5 And it was so, when the days of their feasting were completed, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and renounced God in their hearts. Thus Job did continually.
そのふるまいの日がひとめぐり終るごとに、ヨブは彼らを呼び寄せて聖別し、朝早く起きて、彼らすべての数にしたがって燔祭をささげた。これはヨブが「わたしのむすこたちは、ことによったら罪を犯し、その心に神をのろったかもしれない」と思ったからである。ヨブはいつも、このように行った。
6 Now it came to pass on the day when the sons of God came to present themselves before Jehovah, that Satan also came among them.
ある日、神の子たちが来て、主の前に立った。サタンも来てその中にいた。
7 And Jehovah said to Satan, From where do thou come? Then Satan answered Jehovah, and said, From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.
主は言われた、「あなたはどこから来たか」。サタンは主に答えて言った、「地を行きめぐり、あちらこちら歩いてきました」。
8 And Jehovah said to Satan, Have thou considered my servant Job? For there is none like him on the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one who fears God, and turns away from evil.
主はサタンに言われた、「あなたはわたしのしもべヨブのように全く、かつ正しく、神を恐れ、悪に遠ざかる者の世にないことを気づいたか」。
9 Then Satan answered Jehovah, and said, Does Job fear God for nothing?
サタンは主に答えて言った、「ヨブはいたずらに神を恐れましょうか。
10 Have thou not made a hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he has, on every side? Thou have blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
あなたは彼とその家およびすべての所有物のまわりにくまなく、まがきを設けられたではありませんか。あなたは彼の勤労を祝福されたので、その家畜は地にふえたのです。
11 But put forth thy hand now, and touch all that he has, and he will renounce thee to thy face.
しかし今あなたの手を伸べて、彼のすべての所有物を撃ってごらんなさい。彼は必ずあなたの顔に向かって、あなたをのろうでしょう」。
12 And Jehovah said to Satan, Behold, all that he has is in thy power, only upon himself do not put forth thy hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of Jehovah.
主はサタンに言われた、「見よ、彼のすべての所有物をあなたの手にまかせる。ただ彼の身に手をつけてはならない」。サタンは主の前から出て行った。
13 And it fell on a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house,
ある日ヨブのむすこ、娘たちが第一の兄の家で食事をし、酒を飲んでいたとき、
14 that there came a messenger to Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the donkeys feeding beside them,
使者がヨブのもとに来て言った、「牛が耕し、ろばがそのかたわらで草を食っていると、
15 and the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away. Yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword, and only I alone have escaped to tell thee.
シバびとが襲ってきて、これを奪い、つるぎをもってしもべたちを打ち殺しました。わたしはただひとりのがれて、あなたに告げるために来ました」。
16 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God fell from heaven, and has burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them, and only I alone have escaped to tell thee.
彼がなお語っているうちに、またひとりが来て言った、「神の火が天から下って、羊およびしもべたちを焼き滅ぼしました。わたしはただひとりのがれて、あなたに告げるために来ました」。
17 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have taken them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword, and only I alone have escaped to tell thee.
彼がなお語っているうちに、またひとりが来て言った、「カルデヤびとが三組に分れて来て、らくだを襲ってこれを奪い、つるぎをもってしもべたちを打ち殺しました。わたしはただひとりのがれて、あなたに告げるために来ました」。
18 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house.
彼がなお語っているうちに、またひとりが来て言った、「あなたのむすこ、娘たちが第一の兄の家で食事をし、酒を飲んでいると、
19 And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead, and only I alone have escaped to tell thee.
荒野の方から大風が吹いてきて、家の四すみを撃ったので、あの若い人たちの上につぶれ落ちて、皆死にました。わたしはただひとりのがれて、あなたに告げるために来ました」。
20 Then Job arose, and tore his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshiped.
このときヨブは起き上がり、上着を裂き、頭をそり、地に伏して拝し、
21 And he said, Naked I came out of my mother's womb, and naked I shall return there. Jehovah gave, and Jehovah has taken away, blessed be the name of Jehovah.
そして言った、「わたしは裸で母の胎を出た。また裸でかしこに帰ろう。主が与え、主が取られたのだ。主のみ名はほむべきかな」。
22 In all this Job did not sin, nor foolishly accuse God.
すべてこの事においてヨブは罪を犯さず、また神に向かって愚かなことを言わなかった。
