Genesis 42
1 Now Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt. And Jacob said to his sons, Why do ye look one upon another?
Ora Giacobbe seppe che in Egitto c'era il grano; perciò disse ai figli: «Perché state a guardarvi l'un l'altro?».
2 And he said, Behold, I have heard that there is grain in Egypt. Get you down there, and buy for us from there, that we may live, and not die.
E continuò: «Ecco, ho sentito dire che vi è il grano in Egitto. Andate laggiù e compratene per noi, perché possiamo conservarci in vita e non morire».
3 And Joseph's ten brothers went down to buy grain from Egypt.
Allora i dieci fratelli di Giuseppe scesero per acquistare il frumento in Egitto.
4 But Benjamin, Joseph's brother, Jacob did not send with his brothers, for he said, Lest perhaps harm befall him.
Ma quanto a Beniamino, fratello di Giuseppe, Giacobbe non lo mandò con i fratelli perché diceva: «Non gli succeda qualche disgrazia!».
5 And the sons of Israel came to buy among those who came, for the famine was in the land of Canaan.
Arrivarono dunque i figli d'Israele per acquistare il grano, in mezzo ad altri che pure erano venuti, perché nel paese di Canaan c'era la carestia.
6 And Joseph was the governor over the land. It was he who sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph's brothers came, and bowed down themselves to him with their faces to the earth.
Ora Giuseppe aveva autorità sul paese e vendeva il grano a tutto il popolo del paese. Perciò i fratelli di Giuseppe vennero da lui e gli si prostrarono davanti con la faccia a terra.
7 And Joseph saw his brothers, and he knew them, but made himself foreign to them, and spoke roughly with them. And he said to them. From where come ye? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food.
Giuseppe vide i suoi fratelli e li riconobbe, ma fece l'estraneo verso di loro, parlò duramente e disse: «Di dove siete venuti?». Risposero: «Dal paese di Canaan per comperare viveri».
8 And Joseph knew his brothers, but they did not know him.
Giuseppe riconobbe dunque i fratelli, mentre essi non lo riconobbero.
9 And Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them. And said to them, Ye are spies; ye have come to see the nakedness of the land.
Si ricordò allora Giuseppe dei sogni che aveva avuti a loro riguardo e disse loro: «Voi siete spie! Voi siete venuti a vedere i punti scoperti del paese».
10 And they said to him, No, my lord, but thy servants have come to buy food.
Gli risposero: «No, signore mio; i tuoi servi sono venuti per acquistare viveri.
11 We are all one man's sons. We are true men. Thy servants are no spies.
Noi siamo tutti figli di un solo uomo. Noi siamo sinceri. I tuoi servi non sono spie!».
12 And he said to them, No, but ye have come to see the nakedness of the land.
Ma egli disse loro: «No, voi siete venuti a vedere i punti scoperti del paese!».
13 And they said, We thy servants are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan. And, behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is not.
Allora essi dissero: «Dodici sono i tuoi servi, siamo fratelli, figli di un solo uomo, nel paese di Canaan; ecco il più giovane è ora presso nostro padre e uno non c'è più».
14 And Joseph said to them, This is that which I spoke to you, saying, Ye are spies.
Giuseppe disse loro: «Le cose stanno come vi ho detto: voi siete spie.
15 By this ye shall be proved: By the life of Pharaoh ye shall not go forth from here unless your youngest brother comes here.
In questo modo sarete messi alla prova: per la vita del faraone, non uscirete di qui se non quando vi avrà raggiunto il vostro fratello più giovane.
16 Send one of you, and let him fetch your brother. And ye shall be bound, that your words may be proved, whether there be truth in you, or else by the life of Pharaoh surely ye are spies.
Mandate uno di voi a prendere il vostro fratello; voi rimarrete prigionieri. Siano così messe alla prova le vostre parole, per sapere se la verità è dalla vostra parte. Se no, per la vita del faraone, voi siete spie!».
17 And he put them all together into ward three days.
E li tenne in carcere per tre giorni.
18 And Joseph said to them the third day, This do, and live, for I fear God:
Al terzo giorno Giuseppe disse loro: «Fate questo e avrete salva la vita; io temo Dio!
19 If ye be true men, let one of your brothers be bound in your prison house, but go ye, carry grain for the famine of your houses,
Se voi siete sinceri, uno dei vostri fratelli resti prigioniero nel vostro carcere e voi andate a portare il grano per la fame delle vostre case.
20 and bring your youngest brother to me. So shall your words be verified, and ye shall not die. And they did so.
Poi mi condurrete qui il vostro fratello più giovane. Allora le vostre parole si dimostreranno vere e non morirete». Essi annuirono.
21 And they said one to another, We are truly guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul when he besought us, and we would not hear. Therefore this distress has come upon us.
Allora si dissero l'un l'altro: «Certo su di noi grava la colpa nei riguardi di nostro fratello, perché abbiamo visto la sua angoscia quando ci supplicava e non lo abbiamo ascoltato. Per questo ci è venuta addosso quest'angoscia».
22 And Reuben answered them, saying, Did I not speak to you, saying, Sin not against the child, and ye would not hear? Therefore also, behold, his blood is required.
Ruben prese a dir loro: «Non ve lo avevo detto io: Non peccate contro il ragazzo? Ma non mi avete dato ascolto. Ecco ora ci si domanda conto del suo sangue».
23 And they did not know that Joseph understood them, for there was an interpreter between them.
Non sapevano che Giuseppe li capiva, perché tra lui e loro vi era l'interprete.
24 And he turned himself around from them, and wept. And he returned to them, and spoke to them, and took Simeon from among them, and bound him before their eyes.
Allora egli si allontanò da loro e pianse. Poi tornò e parlò con essi. Scelse tra di loro Simeone e lo fece incatenare sotto i loro occhi.
25 Then Joseph commanded to fill their vessels with grain, and to restore every man's money into his sack, and to give them provisions for the way. And thus it was done to them.
Quindi Giuseppe diede ordine che si riempissero di grano i loro sacchi e si rimettesse il denaro di ciascuno nel suo sacco e si dessero loro provviste per il viaggio. E così venne loro fatto.
26 And they loaded their donkeys with their grain, and departed from there.
Essi caricarono il grano sugli asini e partirono di là.
27 And as one of them opened his sack to give his donkey provender in the lodging place, he saw his money, and, behold, it was in the mouth of his sack.
Ora in un luogo dove passavano la notte uno di essi aprì il sacco per dare il foraggio all'asino e vide il proprio denaro alla bocca del sacco.
28 And he said to his brothers, My money is restored, and, lo, it is even in my sack. And their heart failed them, and they turned trembling one to another, saying, What is this that God has done to us?
Disse ai fratelli: «Mi è stato restituito il denaro: eccolo qui nel mio sacco!». Allora si sentirono mancare il cuore e tremarono, dicendosi l'un l'altro: «Che è mai questo che Dio ci ha fatto?».
29 And they came to Jacob their father to the land of Canaan, and told him all that had befallen them, saying,
Arrivati da Giacobbe loro padre, nel paese di Canaan, gli riferirono tutte le cose che erano loro capitate:
30 The man, the lord of the land, spoke roughly with us, and took us for spies of the country.
«Quell'uomo che è il signore del paese ci ha parlato duramente e ci ha messi in carcere come spie del paese.
31 And we said to him, We are true men, and we are no spies.
Allora gli abbiamo detto: Noi siamo sinceri; non siamo spie!
32 We are twelve brothers, sons of our father. One is not, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan.
Noi siamo dodici fratelli, figli di nostro padre: uno non c'è più e il più giovane è ora presso nostro padre nel paese di Canaan.
33 And the man, the lord of the land, said to us, By this I shall know that ye are true men. Leave one of your brothers with me, and take grain for the famine of your houses, and go your way,
Ma l'uomo, signore del paese, ci ha risposto: In questo modo io saprò se voi siete sinceri: lasciate qui con me uno dei vostri fratelli, prendete il grano necessario alle vostre case e andate.
34 and bring your youngest brother to me. Then I shall know that ye are no spies, but that ye are true men. So I will deliver your brother to you, and ye shall trade in the land.
Poi conducetemi il vostro fratello più giovane; così saprò che non siete spie, ma che siete sinceri; io vi renderò vostro fratello e voi potrete percorrere il paese in lungo e in largo».
35 And it came to pass as they emptied their sacks, that, behold, every man's bundle of money was in his sack. And when they and their father saw their bundles of money, they were afraid.
Mentre vuotavano i sacchi, ciascuno si accorse di avere la sua borsa di denaro nel proprio sacco. Quando essi e il loro padre videro le borse di denaro, furono presi dal timore.
36 And Jacob their father said to them, Ye have bereaved me of my sons. Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and ye will take Benjamin away. All these things are against me.
E il padre loro Giacobbe disse: «Voi mi avete privato dei figli! Giuseppe non c'è più, Simeone non c'è più e Beniamino me lo volete prendere. Su di me tutto questo ricade!».
37 And Reuben spoke to his father, saying, Kill my two sons if I do not bring him to thee. Deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him to thee again.
Allora Ruben disse al padre: «Farai morire i miei due figli, se non te lo ricondurrò. Affidalo a me e io te lo restituirò».
38 And he said, My son shall not go down with you, for his brother is dead, and he only is left. If harm befalls him by the way in which ye go, then ye will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol. (Sheol h7585)
Ma egli rispose: «Il mio figlio non verrà laggiù con voi, perché suo fratello è morto ed egli è rimasto solo. Se gli capitasse una disgrazia durante il viaggio che volete fare, voi fareste scendere con dolore la mia canizie negli inferi». (Sheol h7585)
