Exodus 5
1 And afterward Moses and Aaron came, and said to Pharaoh, Thus says Jehovah, the God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness.
その後、モーセとアロンは行ってパロに言った、「イスラエルの神、主はこう言われる、『わたしの民を去らせ、荒野で、わたしのために祭をさせなさい』と」。
2 And Pharaoh said, Who is Jehovah, that I should hearken to his voice to let Israel go? I do not know Jehovah, and moreover I will not let Israel go.
パロは言った、「主とはいったい何者か。わたしがその声に聞き従ってイスラエルを去らせなければならないのか。わたしは主を知らない。またイスラエルを去らせはしない」。
3 And they said, The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Let us go, we pray thee, three days' journey into the wilderness, and sacrifice to Jehovah our God, lest he fall upon us with pestilence, or with the sword.
彼らは言った、「ヘブルびとの神がわたしたちに現れました。どうか、わたしたちを三日の道のりほど荒野に行かせ、わたしたちの神、主に犠牲をささげさせてください。そうしなければ主は疫病か、つるぎをもって、わたしたちを悩まされるからです」。
4 And the king of Egypt said to them, Therefore do ye, Moses and Aaron, loose the people from their works? Get you to your burdens.
エジプトの王は彼らに言った、「モーセとアロンよ、あなたがたは、なぜ民に働きをやめさせようとするのか。自分の労役につくがよい」。
5 And Pharaoh said, Behold, the people of the land are now many, and ye make them rest from their burdens.
パロはまた言った、「見よ、今や土民の数は多い。しかも、あなたがたは彼らに労役を休ませようとするのか」。
6 And the same day Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters of the people, and their officers, saying,
その日、パロは民を追い使う者と、民のかしらたちに命じて言った、
7 Ye shall no more give the people straw to make brick as formerly. Let them go and gather straw for themselves.
「あなたがたは、れんがを作るためのわらを、もはや、今までのように、この民に与えてはならない。彼らに自分で行って、わらを集めさせなさい。
8 And the number of the bricks, which they made formerly, ye shall lay upon them. Ye shall not diminish any of it. For they are idle, therefore they cry, saying, Let us go and sacrifice to our God.
また前に作っていた、れんがの数どおりに彼らに作らせ、それを減らしてはならない。彼らはなまけ者だ。それだから、彼らは叫んで、『行ってわたしたちの神に犠牲をささげさせよ』と言うのだ。
9 Let heavier work be laid upon the men, that they may labor in it, and let them not regard lying words.
この人々の労役を重くして、働かせ、偽りの言葉に心を寄せさせぬようにしなさい」。
10 And the taskmasters of the people went out, and their officers, and they spoke to the people, saying, Thus says Pharaoh, I will not give you straw.
そこで民を追い使う者たちと、民のかしらたちは出て行って、民に言った、「パロはこう仰せられる、『あなたがたに、わらは与えない。
11 Go yourselves, get you straw where ye can find it, for none of your work shall be diminished.
自分で行って、見つかる所から、わらを取って来るがよい。しかし働きは少しも減らしてはならない』と」。
12 So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble for straw.
そこで民はエジプトの全地に散って、わらのかわりに、刈り株を集めた。
13 And the taskmasters were urgent saying, Fulfill your works, your daily tasks, as when there was straw.
追い使う者たちは、彼らをせき立てて言った、「わらがあった時と同じように、あなたがたの働きの、日ごとの分を仕上げなければならない」。
14 And the officers of the sons of Israel, whom Pharaoh's taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and demanded, Why have ye not fulfilled your task both yesterday and today, in making brick as formerly?
パロの追い使う者たちがイスラエルの人々の上に立てたかしらたちは、打たれて、「なぜ、あなたがたは、れんが作りの仕事を、きょうも、前のように仕上げないのか」と言われた。
15 Then the officers of the sons of Israel came and cried to Pharaoh, saying, Why do thou deal thus with thy servants?
そこで、イスラエルの人々のかしらたちはパロのところに行き、叫んで言った、「あなたはなぜ、しもべどもにこんなことをなさるのですか。
16 There is no straw given to thy servants, and they say to us, Make brick. And, behold, thy servants are beaten, but the fault it in thine own people.
しもべどもは、わらを与えられず、しかも彼らはわたしたちに、『れんがは作れ』と言うのです。その上、しもべどもは打たれています。罪はあなたの民にあるのです」。
17 But he said, Ye are idle, ye are idle. Therefore ye say, Let us go and sacrifice to Jehovah.
パロは言った、「あなたがたは、なまけ者だ、なまけ者だ。それだから、『行って、主に犠牲をささげさせよ』と言うのだ。
18 Go therefore now, and work, for there shall no straw be given you, yet ye shall deliver the number of bricks.
さあ、行って働きなさい。わらは与えないが、なおあなたがたは定めた数のれんがを納めなければならない」。
19 And the officers of the sons of Israel saw that they were in affliction, when it was said, Ye shall not diminish anything from your bricks, your daily tasks.
イスラエルの人々のかしらたちは、「れんがの日ごとの分を減らしてはならない」と言われたので、悪い事態になったことを知った。
20 And they met Moses and Aaron, who stood in the way, as they came forth from Pharaoh,
彼らがパロを離れて出てきた時、彼らに会おうとして立っていたモーセとアロンに会ったので、
21 and they said to them, Jehovah look upon you, and judge, because ye have made our fragrance to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to slay us.
彼らに言った、「主があなたがたをごらんになって、さばかれますように。あなたがたは、わたしたちをパロとその家来たちにきらわせ、つるぎを彼らの手に渡して、殺させようとしておられるのです」。
22 And Moses returned to Jehovah, and said, Lord, why have thou dealt ill with this people? Why is it that thou have sent me?
モーセは主のもとに帰って言った、「主よ、あなたは、なぜこの民をひどい目にあわされるのですか。なんのためにわたしをつかわされたのですか。
23 For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in thy name, he has dealt ill with this people, neither have thou delivered thy people at all.
わたしがパロのもとに行って、あなたの名によって語ってからこのかた、彼はこの民をひどい目にあわせるばかりです。また、あなたは、すこしもあなたの民を救おうとなさいません」。
