< Deuteronomy 24 >

1 When a man takes a wife, and marries her, then it shall be, if she finds no favor in his eyes, because he has found some unseemly thing in her, that he shall write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house.
“When a man takes a wife and has married her, and it has been, if she does not find grace in his eyes (for he has found nakedness in her of anything), then he has written a writing of divorce for her, and given [it] into her hand, and sent her out of his house;
2 And when she has departed out of his house, she may go and be another man's.
when she has gone out of his house, and has gone and been another man’s,
3 And if the latter husband dislikes her, and writes her a bill of divorcement, and gives it in her hand, and sends her out of his house, or if the latter husband dies, who took her to be his wife,
and the latter man has hated her, and written a writing of divorce for her, and given [it] into her hand, and sent her out of his house, or when the latter man dies, who has taken her to himself for a wife,
4 her former husband, who sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife after she is defiled. For that is abomination before Jehovah, and thou shall not cause the land to sin, which Jehovah thy God gives thee for an inheritance.
her former husband who sent her away is not able to return to take her to be to him for a wife, after that she has become defiled; for it [is] an abomination before YHWH, and you do not cause the land to sin which your God YHWH is giving to you [for] an inheritance.
5 When a man takes a new wife, he shall not go out in the army, neither shall he be charged with any business. He shall be free at home one year, and shall cheer his wife whom he has taken.
When a man takes a new wife, he does not go out into the host, and [one] does not pass over to him for anything; he is free at his own house [for] one year, and his wife, whom he has taken, he has made glad.
6 No man shall take the mill or the upper millstone to pledge, for he takes life to pledge.
No one takes millstones and rider in pledge, for it [is one’s] life he is taking in pledge.
7 If a man is found stealing any of his brothers of the sons of Israel, and he deals with him harshly, or sells him, then that thief shall die. So shall thou put away the evil from the midst of thee.
When a man is found stealing a person from his brothers, from the sons of Israel, and has tyrannized over him and sold him, then that thief has died, and you have put away evil out of your midst.
8 Take heed in the disease of leprosy, that thou observe diligently, and do according to all that the priests the Levites shall teach you. As I commanded them, so ye shall observe to do.
Take heed in the plague of leprosy, to watch greatly, and to do according to all that the priests, the Levites, teach you; you observe to do as I have commanded them;
9 Remember what Jehovah thy God did to Miriam by the way as ye came forth out of Egypt.
remember that which your God YHWH has done to Miriam in the way, in your coming out of Egypt.
10 When thou do lend thy neighbor any manner of loan, thou shall not go into his house to fetch his pledge.
When you lift up a debt of anything on your brother, you do not go into his house to obtain his pledge;
11 Thou shall stand outside, and the man to whom thou lend shall bring forth the pledge outside to thee.
you stand at the outside, and the man on whom you are lifting [it] up is bringing out the pledge to you at the outside.
12 And if he is a poor man, thou shall not sleep with his pledge.
And if he is a poor man, you do not lie down with his pledge;
13 Thou shall surely restore to him the pledge when the sun goes down, that he may sleep in his garment, and bless thee. And it shall be righteousness to thee before Jehovah thy God.
you certainly give back the pledge to him at the going in of the sun, and he has lain down in his own raiment and has blessed you; and it is righteousness to you before your God YHWH.
14 Thou shall not oppress a hired servant who is poor and needy, whether he be of thy brothers, or of thy sojourners that are in thy land within thy gates.
You do not oppress a hired worker, poor and needy, of your brothers or of your sojourner who is in your land within your gates;
15 Thou shall give him his hire in his day, neither shall the sun go down upon it, for he is poor, and sets his heart upon it, lest he cry against thee to Jehovah, and it be sin to thee.
you give his hire in his day, and the sun does not go in on it, for he [is] poor, and he is supporting his life on it, lest he cries against you to YHWH, and it has been sin in you.
16 The fathers shall not be put to death for the sons, neither shall the sons be put to death for the fathers. Every man shall be put to death for his own sin.
Fathers are not put to death for sons, and sons are not put to death for fathers—they are each put to death for his own sin.
17 Thou shall not distort the justice due to the sojourner, or to the fatherless, nor take the widow's raiment to pledge,
You do not turn aside the judgment of a fatherless sojourner, nor take the garment of a widow in pledge;
18 but thou shall remember that thou were a bondman in Egypt, and Jehovah thy God redeemed thee from there. Therefore I command thee to do this thing.
and you have remembered that you have been a servant in Egypt, and your God YHWH ransoms you from there; therefore I am commanding you to do this thing.
19 When thou reap thy harvest in thy field, and have forgotten a sheaf in the field, thou shall not go again to fetch it. It shall be for the sojourner, for the fatherless, and for the widow, that Jehovah thy God may bless thee in all the work of thy hands.
When you reap your harvest in your field, and have forgotten a sheaf in a field, you do not return to take it; it is for the sojourner, for the fatherless, and for the widow, so that your God YHWH blesses you in all the work of your hands.
20 When thou beat thine olive tree, thou shall not go over the boughs again. It shall be for the sojourner, for the fatherless, and for the widow.
When you beat your olive, you do not examine the branch behind you; it is for the sojourner, for the fatherless, and for the widow.
21 When thou gather of thy vineyard, thou shall not glean it behind thee. It shall be for the sojourner, for the fatherless, and for the widow.
When you cut your vineyard, you do not glean behind you; it is for the sojourner, for the fatherless, and for the widow;
22 And thou shall remember that thou were a bondman in the land of Egypt. Therefore I command thee to do this thing.
and you have remembered that you have been a servant in the land of Egypt; therefore I am commanding you to do this thing.”
