2 Samuel 11
1 And it came to pass, at the return of the year, at the time when kings go out to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel. And they destroyed the sons of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem.
Or, il arriva qu’au retour de l’année, au temps que les rois ont coutume d’aller à la guerre, David envoya Joab et ses serviteurs avec lui et tout Israël, et il ravagèrent les enfants d’Ammon et assiégèrent Rabba; mais David demeura à Jérusalem.
2 And it came to pass at evening, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house. And from the roof he saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.
Pendant que ces choses se passaient, il advint que David se levait de son lit après midi, et qu’il se promenait sur la terrasse du palais; or il vit une femme qui se baignait vis-à-vis sur sa terrasse; et cette femme était fort belle.
3 And David sent and inquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?
Le roi donc envoya, et demanda quelle était cette femme. Et on lui annonça que c’était Bethsabée, fille d’Eliam, femme d’Urie, l’Héthéen.
4 And David sent messengers, and took her. And she came in to him, and he lay with her (for she was purified from her uncleanness), and she returned to her house.
C’est pourquoi David, ayant envoyé des messagers, l’enleva. Lorsqu’elle fut entrée auprès de lui, il dormit avec elle: et aussitôt elle se purifia de son impureté;
5 And the woman conceived. And she sent and told David, and said, I am with child.
Et elle retourna en sa maison, après avoir conçu. Et envoyant, elle annonça à David, et dit: J’ai conçu.
6 And David sent to Joab, saying, Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David.
Or, David envoya vers Joab, disant: Envoie-moi Urie, l’Héthéen. Et Joab envoya Urie à David.
7 And when Uriah came to him, David asked of him how Joab did, and how the people fared, and how the war prospered.
Et Urie vint vers David; et David demanda si Joab allait bien ainsi que le peuple, et comment la guerre était conduite.
8 And David said to Uriah, Go down to thy house, and wash thy feet. And Uriah departed out of the king's house, and a gift from the king followed him.
Puis David dit à Urie: Va en ta maison, et lave tes pieds. Et Urie sortit de la maison du roi, et les mets du roi le suivirent.
9 But Uriah slept at the door of the king's house with all the servants of his lord, and did not go down to his house.
Mais Urie dormit devant la porte de la maison du roi avec les autres serviteurs de son seigneur, et il ne descendit point en sa maison.
10 And when they had told David, saying, Uriah did not go down to his house, David said to Uriah, Have thou not come from a journey? Why did thou not go down to thy house?
Et on l’annonça à David, en disant: Urie n’est pas allé en sa maison. Et David demanda à Urie: Est-ce que tu ne viens pas d’un voyage? pourquoi n’es-tu pas descendu en ta maison?
11 And Uriah said to David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in booths, and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open field. Shall I then go into my house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? As thou live, and as thy soul lives, I will not do this thing.
Et Urie répondit à David: L’arche de Dieu, et Israël, et Juda, habitent dans les pavillons, et mon seigneur Joab, et les serviteurs de mon seigneur demeurent sur la face de la terre, et moi, j’entrerai en ma maison, pour manger et boire, et pour dormir avec ma femme? Par votre salut, et par le salut de votre âme, je ne ferai pas cette chose.
12 And David said to Uriah, Remain here today also, and tomorrow I will let thee depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day, and the morrow.
David donc dit à Urie: Demeure ici encore aujourd’hui, et demain je te renverrai. Urie demeura à Jérusalem ce jour-là et le lendemain.
13 And when David had called him, he ate and drank before him, and he made him drunk. And at evening he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but did not go down to his house.
Alors David l’appela pour qu’il mangeât devant lui et qu’il bût, et il l’enivra. Urie étant sorti le soir, dormit dans son lit avec les serviteurs de son seigneur, et il ne descendit pas en sa maison.
14 And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah.
Il arriva donc le matin que David écrivit une lettre à Joab, et l’envoya par la main d’Urie,
15 And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die.
Ecrivant dans la lettre: Placez Urie au premier rang dans la bataille, là où le combat est le plus fort; et abandonnez-le, afin que, frappé, il périsse.
16 And it came to pass, when Joab kept watch upon the city, that he assigned Uriah to the place where he knew that valiant men were.
Comme donc Joab assiégeait la ville, il plaça Urie dans le lieu où il savait qu’étaient les hommes les plus vaillants.
17 And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab. And there fell some of the people, even of the servants of David, and Uriah the Hittite died also.
Et les hommes, étant sortis de la cité, combattaient contre Joab, et dans la multitude des serviteurs de David plusieurs tombèrent, et Urie, l’Héthéen, mourut aussi.
18 Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war.
C’est pourquoi Joab envoya, et annonça à David tous les événements du combat,
19 And he charged the messenger, saying, When thou have made an end of telling all the things concerning the war to the king,
Et il ordonna au messager, disant: Lorsque tu auras achevé au roi tout ton récit de la guerre,
20 it shall be that, if the king's wrath arise, and he says to thee, Why did ye go so near to the city to fight? Did ye not know that they would shoot from the wall?
Si tu vois qu’il s’indigne et dise: Pourquoi vous êtes-vous approchés du mur pour combattre? est-ce que vous ignoriez que beaucoup de traits sont lancés du haut du mur?
21 Who smote Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? Did not a woman cast an upper millstone upon him from the wall so that he died at Thebez? Why did ye go so near the wall? Then thou shall say, Thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.
Qui frappa Abimélech, fils de Jérobaal? n’est-ce pas une femme qui lança du mur sur lui un morceau de meule, et le tua à Thébès? Pourquoi vous êtes-vous approchés du mur? tu diras: Votre serviteur Urie l’Héthéen est tombé mort aussi.
22 So the messenger went, and came and told David all that Joab had sent him.
Le messager donc partit, et il vint et raconta à David tout ce que lui avait ordonné Joab.
23 And the messenger said to David, The men prevailed against us, and came out to us into the field, and we were upon them even to the entrance of the gate.
Et le messager dit à David: Les hommes ont prévalu contre nous, et ils sont sortis sur nous dans la campagne; mais nous, ayant fait une irruption, nous les avons poursuivis jusqu’à la porte de la ville.
24 And the shooters shot at thy servants from off the wall. And some of the king's servants are dead, and thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.
Et les archers ont lancé des traits contre vos serviteurs du haut du mur; et il est mort des serviteurs du roi, et, qui plus est, votre serviteur Urie, l’Héthéen, est mort.
25 Then David said to the messenger, Thus thou shall say to Joab, Let not this thing displease thee, for the sword devours one as well as another. Make thy battle stronger against the city, and overthrow it. And encourage thou him.
Et David répondit au messager: Tu diras ceci à Joab: Que cela ne t’abatte point; car divers est le succès de la guerre; c’est maintenant celui-ci, et maintenant celui-là que dévore le glaive: anime tes combattants contre la ville, afin que tu la détruises, et encourage-les.
26 And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she made lamentation for her husband.
Or, la femme d’Urie apprit qu’Urie, son mari, était mort, et elle le pleura.
27 And when the mourning was past, David sent and took her home to his house, and she became his wife, and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased Jehovah.
Mais, le deuil passé, David envoya, et il l’introduisit en sa maison; alors elle devint sa femme, et elle lui enfanta un fils. Or, cette action qu’avait faite David déplut au Seigneur.
