2 Kings 5

1 Now Naaman, captain of the army of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master, and honorable, because by him Jehovah had given victory to Syria. He was also a mighty man of valor, but he was a leper.

Naaman, général d’armée du roi de Syrie, était un homme considérable et en grande faveur chez son maître, parce que le Seigneur avait donné par lui la victoire à la Syrie; mais cet homme, ce vaillant guerrier, était lépreux.

2 And the Syrians had gone out in bands, and had brought away captive out of the land of Israel a little maiden, and she waited on Naaman's wife.

Or, les Syriens, ayant fait une incursion sur le territoire d’Israël, en ramenèrent captive une jeune fille, qui entra au service de l’épouse de Naaman.

3 And she said to her mistress, Would that my lord were with the prophet who is in Samaria! Then he would heal him of his leprosy.

Elle dit à sa maîtresse: "Ah! Si mon maître s’adressait au prophète qui est à Samarie, certes il le délivrerait de sa lèpre."

4 And a man went in, and told his lord, saying, Thus and thus said the maiden who is of the land of Israel.

Naaman vint l’annoncer à son maître, disant: "Voilà ce qu’a dit cette jeune fille, qui est du pays d’Israël."

5 And the king of Syria said, Go now, and I will send a letter to the king of Israel. And he departed, and took with him ten talents of silver, and six thousand pieces of gold, and ten changes of raiment.

Le roi de Syrie répondit: "Va, pars; je veux envoyer une lettre au roi d’Israël." Et il partit, emportant dix kikkar d’argent, six mille pièces d’or et dix habillements de rechange.

6 And he brought the letter to the king of Israel, saying, And now when this letter has come to thee, behold, I have sent Naaman my servant to thee that thou may heal him of his leprosy.

Il remit au roi d’Israël la lettre, ainsi conçue: "Au moment où cette lettre te parviendra, sache que j’ai envoyé vers toi Naaman, mon serviteur, pour que tu le délivres de sa lèpre."

7 And it came to pass, when the king of Israel had read the letter, that he tore his clothes, and said, Am I God, to kill and to make alive, that this man sends to me to heal a man of his leprosy? But consider, I pray you, and see how he seeks a quarrel against me.

A la lecture de cette lettre, le roi d’Israël déchira ses vêtements et dit: "Suis-je donc un dieu qui fasse mourir et ressuscite, pour que celui-ci me mande de délivrer quelqu’un de sa lèpre? Mais non, sachez-le bien et prenez-y garde, c’est qu’il me cherche querelle."

8 And it was so, when Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes, that he sent to the king, saying, Why have thou torn thy clothes? Let him come now to me, and he shall know that there is a prophet in Israel.

Cependant, Elisée, l’homme de Dieu, ayant appris que le roi d’Israël avait déchiré ses vêtements, fit dire au roi: "Pourquoi as-tu déchiré tes vêtements? Qu’il vienne me trouver, et il saura qu’il est des prophètes en Israël!"

9 So Naaman came with his horses and with his chariots, and stood at the door of the house of Elisha.

Naaman vint avec ses chevaux et son char, et s’arrêta à l’entrée de la demeure d’Elisée.

10 And Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and thy flesh shall come again to thee, and thou shall be clean.

Elisée lui fit dire par un envoyé: "Va te plonger sept fois dans le Jourdain, et ta chair redeviendra nette."

11 But Naaman was angry, and went away, and said, Behold, I thought he will surely come out to me, and stand, and call on the name of Jehovah his God, and wave his hand over the place, and heal the leper.

Naaman se mit en colère et s’en alla en disant: "Certes, m’étais-je dit, il va sortir, s’arrêter, invoquer le nom de l’Eternel, son Dieu; puis il aurait passé sa main sur la partie malade et guéri le lépreux.

12 Are not Abanah and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? May I not wash in them, and be clean? So he turned and went away in a rage.

Est-ce que l’Amana et le Parpar, ces rivières de Damas, ne valent pas mieux que toutes les eaux d’Israël? Pourquoi, en m’y baignant, ne deviendrais-je pas net?" Et il s’en retournait et partait furieux,

13 And his servants came near, and spoke to him, and said, My father, if the prophet had bid thee do some great thing, would thou not have done it? How much rather then, when he says to thee, Wash, and be clean?

quand ses serviteurs s’approchèrent pour l’exhorter et dirent: "Mon père, si le prophète t’avait imposé une chose difficile, ne l’aurais-tu pas faite? Combien plutôt, lorsqu’il te dit: "Baigne-toi, tu seras net!"

14 Then went he down, and dipped himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God. And his flesh came again like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.

Il descendit, se plongea dans le Jourdain sept fois, selon la parole de l’homme de Dieu, et sa chair redevint comme la chair d’un jeune enfant: il était rétabli.

15 And he returned to the man of God, he and all his company, and came, and stood before him. And he said, Behold, now I know that there is no God in all the earth, but in Israel. Now therefore, I pray thee, take a present from thy servant.

Il s’en retourna chez l’homme de Dieu avec toute sa suite; arrivé, il se présenta devant lui et dit: "Ah! Certes, je reconnais qu’il n’y a point de dieu sur toute la terre, si ce n’est en Israël! Et maintenant, de grâce, accepte un présent de ton serviteur."

16 But he said, As Jehovah lives, before whom I stand, I will receive none. And he urged him to take it, but he refused.

Elisée répondit: "Par l’Eternel, que j’ai toujours servi, je n’accepterai point." Naaman le pressa d’accepter, mais il refusa.

17 And Naaman said, If not, yet, I pray thee, let there be given to thy servant two mules' burden of dirt, for thy servant will henceforth offer neither burnt offering nor sacrifice to other gods, but to Jehovah.

Naaman reprit: "Eh bien, non! Qu’on donne du moins à ton serviteur autant de terre qu’en peuvent porter une paire de mulets; car ton serviteur ne fera plus d’holocauste ni de sacrifice à d’autres dieux qu’à l’Eternel.

18 In this thing Jehovah pardon thy servant: when my master goes into the house of Rimmon to worship there, and he leans on my hand, and I bow myself in the house of Rimmon, when I bow myself in the house of Rimmon, Jehovah pardon thy servant in this thing.

Toutefois, que l’Eternel pardonne une chose à ton serviteur: quand mon maître vient se prosterner dans le temple de Rimmôn, il s’appuie sur mon bras; je devrai donc me prosterner dans le temple de Rimmôn. Or, lorsque je me prosternerai dans ce temple, que l’Eternel pardonne cette action à ton serviteur."

19 And he said to him, Go in peace. So he departed from him a little way.

Elisée lui répondit: "Va en paix." Or, il s’était déjà éloigné d’une kibra de pays…

20 But Gehazi the servant of Elisha the man of God, said, Behold, my master has spared this Naaman the Syrian, in not receiving at his hands that which he brought. As Jehovah lives, I will run after him, and take something from him.

Ghéhazi, serviteur d’Elisée, l’homme de Dieu, s’était dit: "Mon maître a refusé d’accepter de la main de ce Syrien Naaman ce qu’il avait apporté. Vive Dieu! Je vais courir après lui, et j’en aurai quelque chose."

21 So Gehazi followed after Naaman. And when Naaman saw him running after him, he alighted from the chariot to meet him, and said, Is all well?

Il suivit donc rapidement Naaman, qui, en le voyant courir après lui, se jeta à bas de son char, alla à sa rencontre et dit: "Tout est-il en paix?"

22 And he said, All is well. My master has sent me, saying, Behold, even now there come to me from the hill-country of Ephraim two young men of the sons of the prophets. Give them, I pray thee, a talent of silver, and two changes of raiment.

Il répondit: "Oui, en paix! C’Est mon maître qui m’envoie pour te dire: A l’instant arrivent chez moi deux jeunes prophètes de la montagne d’Ephraïm; donne pour eux, je te prie, un kikkar d’argent et deux vêtements de rechange."

23 And Naaman said, Be pleased to take two talents. And he urged him, and bound two talents of silver in two bags, with two changes of raiment, and laid them upon two of his servants, and they bore them before him.

Naman répondit: "Veuille accepter deux kikkar." Il insista, puis serra deux kikkar d’argent dans deux sacoches avec deux vêtements de rechange, et les remit à deux de ses serviteurs pour les transporter.

24 And when he came to the hill, he took them from their hand, and bestowed them in the house, and he let the men go, and they departed.

Arrivé à la colline, Ghéhazi prit le tout de leurs mains, le mit en sûreté dans la maison, et renvoya les hommes, qui s’en allèrent.

25 But he went in, and stood before his master. And Elisha said to him, From where did thou come, Gehazi? And he said, Thy servant went nowhere.

Aussitôt de retour, il se présenta devant son maître. Elisée lui dit: "D’Où viens-tu, Ghéhazi?" Il répondit: "Ton serviteur n’est allé nulle part.

26 And he said to him, Did not my heart go with thee when the man turned from his chariot to meet thee? Is it a time to receive money, and to receive garments, and oliveyards and vineyards, and sheep and oxen, and men-servants and maid-servants?

Mon esprit non plus n’a pas été absent, reprit Elisée, quand ce personnage a tourné bride pour aller à ta rencontre. Etait-ce le moment de prendre argent ou vêtements, oliviers ou vignobles, brebis ou bœufs, esclaves ou servantes?

27 The leprosy therefore of Naaman shall cling to thee, and to thy seed forever. And he went out from his presence a leper as white as snow.

La lèpre de Naaman s’attachera à toi et à ta postérité à jamais." Ghéhazi se retira de devant lui, lépreux comme neige.
