Spreuken 4
1 Hoort, gij kinderen! de tucht des vaders, en merkt op, om verstand te weten.
Hear, ye sons, the correction of a father, and attend, that ye may know understanding.
2 Dewijl ik ulieden goede leer geve, verlaat mijn wet niet.
For, good teaching, have I given you, mine instruction, do not ye forsake.
3 Want ik was mijns vaders zoon, teder, en een enige voor het aangezicht mijner moeder.
For, a son, became I to my father, tender and most precious in the sight of my mother.
4 Hij nu leerde mij, en zeide tot mij: Uw hart houde mijn woorden vast, onderhoud mijn geboden, en leef.
So he taught me, and said to me—Let thy heart, lay hold of my words, Keep my commandments and live!
5 Verkrijg wijsheid, verkrijg verstand; vergeet niet, en wijk niet van de redenen mijns monds.
Acquire wisdom, acquire understanding, Do not forget, neither decline thou from the sayings of my mouth.
6 Verlaat ze niet, en zij zal u behoeden; heb ze lief, en zij zal u bewaren.
Do not forsake her, and she will guard thee, —love her and she will keep thee.
7 De wijsheid is het voornaamste; verkrijg dan wijsheid, en verkrijg verstand met al uw bezitting.
The principal thing, is wisdom, acquire thou wisdom, With all thine acquisition, acquire thou understanding.
8 Verhef ze, en zij zal u verhogen; zij zal u vereren, als gij haar omhelzen zult.
Exalt her, and she will set thee on high, she will bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her:
9 Zij zal uw hoofd een aangenaam toevoegsel geven, een sierlijke kroon zal zij u leveren.
She will give for thy head, a wreath of beauty, A crown of adorning, will she bestow upon thee.
10 Hoor, mijn zoon! en neem mijn redenen aan, en de jaren des levens zullen u vermenigvuldigd worden.
Hear, my son, and receive my sayings, and they will multiply to thee the years of life.
11 Ik onderwijs u in den weg der wijsheid; ik doe u treden in de rechte sporen.
In the way of wisdom, have I taught thee, I have guided thee in tracks of uprightness.
12 In uw gaan zal uw tred niet benauwd worden, en indien gij loopt, zult gij niet struikelen.
When thou walkest, thy step shall not be hemmed in, and, if thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble.
13 Grijp de tucht aan, laat niet af; bewaar ze, want zij is uw leven.
Take fast hold of correction, let her not go, —keep her, for, she, is thy life.
14 Kom niet op het pad der goddelozen, en treed niet op den weg der bozen.
Upon the path of the lawless, do not thou enter, and do not advance in the way of the wicked:
15 Verwerp dien, ga er niet door; wijk er van, en ga voorbij.
Avoid it, do not pass thereon—turn from it, and depart.
16 Want zij slapen niet, zo zij geen kwaad gedaan hebben; en hun slaap wordt weggenomen, zo zij niet iemand hebben doen struikelen.
For they sleep not, unless they can do mischief, —They rob themselves of their sleep, if they cannot cause someone to stumble,
17 Want zij eten brood der goddeloosheid, en drinken wijn van enkel geweld.
For they consume bread gotten by lawlessness, and, wine obtained by violence, they drink.
18 Maar het pad der rechtvaardigen is gelijk een schijnend licht, voortgaande en lichtende tot den vollen dag toe.
But, the path of the righteous, is as the light of dawn, —going on and brightening, unto meridian day.
19 De weg der goddelozen is als donkerheid, zij weten niet, waarover zij struikelen zullen.
The way of the lawless, is like darkness, they know not, at what they stumble.
20 Mijn zoon! merk op mijn woorden, neig uw oor tot mijn redenen.
My son, to my words, attend, to my sayings, incline thou thine ear;
21 Laat ze niet wijken van uw ogen, behoud ze in het midden uws harten.
Let them not depart from thine eyes, keep them in the midst of thy heart;
22 Want zij zijn het leven dengenen, die ze vinden, en een medicijn voor hun gehele vlees.
For, life, they are, to them who find them, —and, to every part of one’s flesh, they bring healing.
23 Behoed uw hart boven al wat te bewaren is, want daaruit zijn de uitgangen des levens.
Above all that must be guarded, keep thou thy heart, for, out of it, are the issues of life.
24 Doe de verkeerdheid des monds van u weg, en doe de verdraaidheid der lippen verre van u.
Remove from thee, perverseness of mouth, and, craftiness of lips, put far from thee.
25 Laat uw ogen rechtuit zien, en uw oogleden zich recht voor u heen houden.
Let, thine eyes, right onward, look, —and, thine eyelashes, point straight before thee.
26 Weeg den gang uws voets, en laat al uw wegen wel gevestigd zijn.
Make level the track of thy foot, that, all thy ways, may be directed aright:
27 Wijk niet ter rechter hand of ter linkerhand, wend uw voet af van het kwade.
Decline not, to the right hand or to the left, —Turn away thy foot from wickedness.
