1 Samuël 5

1 De Filistijnen nu namen de ark Gods, en zij brachten ze van Eben-Haezer tot Asdod.

Now, the Philistines, having taken the ark of God, —brought it in from Eben-ezer, unto Ashdod.

2 En de Filistijnen namen de ark Gods, en zij brachten ze in het huis van Dagon, en stelden ze bij Dagon.

And, when the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon, —and placed it by the side of Dagon.

3 Maar als die van Asdod des anderen daags vroeg opstonden, ziet, zo was Dagon op zijn aangezicht ter aarde gevallen voor de ark des HEEREN. En zij namen Dagon en zetten hem weder op zijn plaats.

And, when they of Ashdod rose early on the morrow and entered into the house of Dagon, they looked and lo! Dagon, was lying prostrate on his face to the earth, before the ark of Yahweh, —so they took Dagon and restored him to his place.

4 Toen zij nu des anderen daags des morgens vroeg opstonden, ziet, Dagon lag op zijn aangezicht ter aarde gevallen voor de ark des HEEREN; maar het hoofd van Dagon, en de beide palmen zijner handen afgehouwen, aan den dorpel; alleenlijk was Dagon daarop overgebleven.

And, when they rose up early in the morning of the morrow, lo! Dagon, was lying prostrate on his face to the earth, before the ark of Yahweh—and, the head of Dagon, and both the palms of his hands, had been cut off against the threshold, only, Dagon himself, was left to him.

5 Daarom treden de priesters van Dagon, en allen, die in het huis van Dagon komen, niet op den dorpel van Dagon te Asdod, tot op dezen dag.

For this cause, do not the priests of Dagon, nor any that enter into the house of Dagon, tread upon the threshold of Dagon, in Ashdod, —until this day.

6 Doch de hand des HEEREN was zwaar over die van Asdod, en verwoestte hen; en Hij sloeg ze met spenen, Asdod en haar landpalen.

Then was the hand of Yahweh heavy against them of Ashdod, and he astounded them, —and smote with tumours Ashdod and her bounds.

7 Toen nu de mannen te Asdod zagen, dat het alzo toeging, zo zeiden zij: Dat de ark des Gods van Israel bij ons niet blijve; want Zijn hand is hard over ons, en over Dagon, onzen god.

And, when the men of Ashdod saw that, so, it was, then kept they saying, Let not the ark of the God of Israel abide with us, for, hard, is his hand upon us, and upon Dagon our god.

8 Daarom zonden zij heen, en verzamelden tot zich al de vorsten der Filistijnen, en zij zeiden: Wat zullen wij met de ark des Gods van Israel doen? En die zeiden: Dat de ark des Gods van Israel rondom Gath ga. Alzo droegen zij de ark des Gods van Israel rondom.

So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said—What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they said: To Gath, let the ark of the God of Israel go round. So they took round the ark of the God of Israel.

9 En het geschiedde, nadat zij die hadden rondom gedragen, zo was de hand des HEEREN tegen die stad met een zeer grote kwelling; want Hij sloeg de lieden dier stad van den kleine tot den grote, en zij hadden spenen in de verborgene plaatsen.

And so it was, after they had taken it round, then was the hand of Yahweh against the city, with an exceeding great consternation, and he smote the men of the city, from the least, even unto the greatest, —and they brake out with tumours.

10 Toen zonden zij de ark Gods naar Ekron; maar het geschiedde, als de ark Gods te Ekron kwam, zo riepen die van Ekron, zeggende: Zij hebben de ark des Gods van Israel tot mij rondom gebracht, om mij en mijn volk te doden.

Then sent they the ark of God to Ekron, —and so it was, when the ark of God entered Ekron, that the Ekronites made outcry, saying—They have brought round unto me the ark of the God of Israel, to slay me, and my people!

11 En zij zonden heen, en vergaderden al de vorsten der Filistijnen, en zeiden: Zendt de ark des Gods van Israel heen, dat zij wederkere tot haar plaats, opdat zij mij en mijn volk niet dode; want er was een dodelijke kwelling in de ganse stad, en de hand Gods was er zeer zwaar.

So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said—Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and restore it to its own place, that it slay not me, and my people. For there had come a deadly consternation, throughout all the city, heavy exceedingly, was the hand of God there.

12 En de mensen, die niet stierven, werden geslagen met spenen, zodat het geschrei der stad opklom naar den hemel.

And, the men who died not, were smitten with the tumours, —so the cry of the city for help, ascended the heavens.
