Spreuken 27
1 Beroem u niet over den dag van morgen; want gij weet niet, wat de dag zal baren.
Make no boast for thyself of the coming day; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.
2 Laat u een vreemde prijzen, en niet uw mond; een onbekende, en niet uw lippen.
Let another man praise thee, and not thy own mouth; a stranger, and not thy own lips.
3 Een steen is zwaar, en het zand gewichtig; maar de toornigheid des dwazen is zwaarder dan die beide.
A stone hath heaviness, and the sand, weight; but a fool's wrath is heavier than both of them.
4 Grimmigheid en overloping van toorn is wreedheid; maar wie zal voor nijdigheid bestaan?
Fury hath its cruelty, and anger its overwhelming power; but who is able to stand before jealousy?
5 Openbare bestraffing is beter dan verborgene liefde.
Better is open reproof than concealed love.
6 De wonden des liefhebbers zijn getrouw; maar de kussingen des haters zijn af te bidden.
Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but deceptive are the kisses of an enemy.
7 Een verzadigde ziel vertreedt het honigzeem; maar aan een hongerige ziel is alle bitter zoet.
The satisfied soul treadeth under foot fine honey; but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.
8 Gelijk een vogel is, die uit zijn nest omdoolt, alzo is een man, die omdoolt uit zijn plaats.
As a bird that wandereth away from her nest, so is a man that wandereth away from his place.
9 Olie en reukwerk verblijdt het hart; alzo is de zoetigheid van iemands vriend, vanwege den raad der ziel.
Oil and perfume cause the heart to rejoice, and so do the sweet words of a friend more than one's own counsel.
10 Verlaat uw vriend, noch den vriend uws vaders niet; en ga ten huize uws broeders niet op den dag van uw tegenspoed. Beter is een gebuur die nabij is, dan een broeder, die verre is.
Thy own friend, and thy father's friend, thou must not forsake; but into thy brother's house enter not on the day of thy calamity: better is a near neighbor than a distant brother.
11 Zijt wijs, mijn zoon, en verblijd mijn hart; opdat ik mijn smader wat te antwoorden heb.
Become wise, my son, and cause my heart to rejoice, that I may give an answer to him that reproacheth me.
12 De kloekzinnige ziet het kwaad, en verbergt zich; de slechten gaan henen door, en worden gestraft.
The prudent foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the simple pass on, and are punished.
13 Als iemand voor een vreemde borg geworden is, neem zijn kleed, en pand hem voor een onbekende vrouw.
Take his garment, for he became surety for a stranger; and on account of an alien woman take a pledge of him.
14 Die zijn vriend zegent met luider stem, zich des morgens vroeg opmakende, het zal hem tot een vloek gerekend worden.
When one saluteth his friend with a loud voice, when rising early in the morning, it will be counted a curse to him.
15 Een gedurige druiping ten dage des slagregens en een kijfachtige huisvrouw zijn even gelijk.
A continual dropping on a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike.
16 Elkeen, die haar verbergt, zou den wind verbergen, en de olie zijner rechterhand, die roept.
He that would conceal her might conceal the wind, and as [fragrant] oil on his right hand, which would betray itself.
17 Ijzer scherpt men met ijzer; alzo scherpt een man het aangezicht zijns naasten.
Iron is sharpened by iron: so doth a man sharpen himself on the countenance of his friend.
18 Die den vijgeboom bewaart, zal zijn vrucht eten; en die zijn heer waarneemt, zal geeerd worden.
Whoso guardeth the fig-tree will eat its fruit: so he that watcheth over his master will be honored.
19 Gelijk in het water het aangezicht is tegen het aangezicht, alzo is des mensen hart tegen den mens.
As the water [showeth] to the face the [reflected] face: so doth the heart of man show itself to man.
20 De hel en het verderf worden niet verzadigd; alzo worden de ogen des mensen niet verzadigd. (Sheol h7585)
The nether world and the place of corruption are never satisfied: so are the eyes of man never satisfied. (Sheol h7585)
21 De smeltkroes is voor het zilver, en de oven voor het goud; alzo is een man naar zijn lof te proeven.
[As] the fining-pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: so is a man [proved] according to his praise.
22 Al stiet gij den dwaas in een mortier met een stamper, in het midden van het gestoten graan, zijn dwaasheid zou van hem niet afwijken.
Though thou shouldst pound the fool in a mortar, in the midst of grains of wheat with a pestle: still would his folly not depart from him.
23 Zijt naarstig, om het aangezicht uwer schapen te kennen; zet uw hart op de kudden.
Endeavor to know well the appearance of thy flocks, direct thy attention to thy herds;
24 Want de schat is niet tot in eeuwigheid; of zal de kroon van geslacht tot geslacht zijn?
For property endureth not for ever, nor doth the crown remain for all generations.
25 Als het gras zich openbaart, en de grasscheuten gezien worden, laat de kruiden der bergen verzameld worden.
When the grass is past, young verdure showeth itself, and then are gathered the herbs of the mountains.
26 De lammeren zullen zijn tot uw kleding, en de bokken de prijs des velds.
The sheep are for thy clothing, and he-goats are the purchase-price of a field.
27 Daartoe zult gij genoegzaamheid van geitenmelk hebben tot uw spijze, tot spijze van uw huis, en leeftocht uwer maagden.
And thou wilt have enough of goats' milk for thy food, for the food of thy household, and the support for thy maidens.
