Job 38
1 Daarna antwoordde de HEERE Job uit een onweder, en zeide:
Then did the Lord address Job out of the storm-wind, and said,
2 Wie is hij, die den raad verduistert met woorden zonder wetenschap?
Who is this that casteth darkness [on my] counsel by words without knowledge?
3 Gord nu, als een man, uw lenden, zo zal Ik u vragen, en onderricht Mij.
Do but gird up like a mighty man thy loins: and I will ask thee, and do thou inform me.
4 Waar waart gij, toen Ik de aarde grondde? Geef het te kennen, indien gij kloek van verstand zijt.
Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? tell it, if thou hast any understanding [of it].
5 Wie heeft haar maten gezet, want gij weet het; of wie heeft over haar een richtsnoer getrokken?
Who fixed her measurements, if thou knowest it? or who stretched the measuring-line over her?
6 Waarop zijn haar grondvesten nedergezonken, of wie heeft haar hoeksteen gelegd?
Upon what are her foundation-pillars placed at rest? or who laid her corner-stone:
7 Toen de morgensterren te zamen vrolijk zongen, en al de kinderen Gods juichten.
When altogether sang the morning stars in gladness, and shouted for joy all the sons of God?
8 Of wie heeft de zee met deuren toegesloten, toen zij uitbrak, en uit de baarmoeder voortkwam?
And who closed up with doors the sea, when, issuing forth, it came out of the deep bosom of the earth?
9 Toen Ik de wolk tot haar kleding stelde, en de donkerheid tot haar windeldoek;
When I made the clouds its garment, and thick fog its swaddling-cloth,
10 Toen Ik voor haar met Mijn besluit de aarde doorbrak, en zette grendel en deuren;
And when I decreed for it my law, and set [for it] bars and doors,
11 En zeide: Tot hiertoe zult gij komen, en niet verder, en hier zal hij zich stellen tegen den hoogmoed uwer golven.
And said, Thus far mayest thou come, but no farther; and here shall be stayed [thy strength] in the pride of thy waves?
12 Hebt gij van uw dagen den morgenstond geboden? Hebt gij den dageraad zijn plaats gewezen;
Didst thou ever, in all thy days, command the morning; didst thou ever assign the morning-dawn its place:
13 Opdat hij de einden der aarde vatten zou; en de goddelozen uit haar uitgeschud zouden worden?
That it might lay hold of the ends of the earth, so that the wicked might be shaken out therefrom?
14 Dat zij veranderd zou worden gelijk zegelleem, en zij gesteld worden als een kleed?
She is changed as the sealing-clay: and [all things] stand as though newly clad.
15 En dat van de goddelozen hun licht geweerd worde, en de hoge arm worde gebroken?
And from the wicked is their light withdrawn, and the high-raised arm is broken.
16 Zijt gij gekomen tot aan de oorsprongen der zee, en hebt gij in het onderste des afgronds gewandeld?
Didst thou ever penetrate as far as the springs of the sea? or wander through the bottom of the deep?
17 Zijn u de poorten des doods ontdekt, en hebt gij gezien de poorten van de schaduw des doods?
Were the gates of death ever laid open unto thee? or canst thou see the doors of the shadow of death?
18 Zijt gij met uw verstand gekomen tot aan de breedte der aarde? Geef het te kennen, indien gij dit alles weet.
Hast thou a clear understanding of the breadth of the earth? Tell it, if thou knowest it all.
19 Waar is de weg, daar het licht woont? En de duisternis, waar is haar plaats?
Where is the way [to the spot where] the light dwelleth? and the darkness—where is its place,
20 Dat gij dat brengen zoudt tot zijn pale, en dat gij merken zoudt de paden zijns huizes?
That thou mightest take each to its boundary, and that thou mightest mark the pathways to its house?
21 Gij weet het, want gij waart toen geboren, en uw dagen zijn veel in getal.
Thou [surely] knowest it; because thou wast then born, and the number of thy days is great!
22 Zijt gij gekomen tot de schatkameren der sneeuw, en hebt gij de schatkameren des hagels gezien?
Didst thou ever enter into the treasuries of the snow? or canst thou see the treasuries of the hail,
23 Dien Ik ophoude tot den tijd der benauwdheid, tot den dag des strijds en des oorlogs!
Which I have reserved for the time of distress, for the day of fight and battle?
24 Waar is de weg, daar het licht verdeeld wordt, en de oostenwind zich verstrooit op de aarde?
Where is the way [to the spot where] the light divideth itself, [where] the east wind is scattered over the earth?
25 Wie deelt voor den stortregen een waterloop uit, en een weg voor het weerlicht der donderen?
Who hath divided off watercourses for the overflowing rain, and a way for the lightning [that is followed by] thunders,
26 Om te regenen op het land, waar niemand is, op de woestijn, waarin geen mens is;
To bring rain on a land, void of men; on a wilderness wherein no son of earth [is found];
27 Om het woeste en het verwoeste te verzadigen, en om het uitspruitsel der grasscheutjes te doen wassen.
To satisfy waste and desolate lands; and to promote the growth of the tender grass?
28 Heeft de regen een vader, of wie baart de druppelen des dauws?
Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of the dew?
29 Uit wiens buik komt het ijs voort, en wie baart den rijm des hemels?
Out of whose womb cometh forth the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven—who giveth birth to it?
30 Als met een steen verbergen zich de wateren, en het vlakke des afgrond wordt omvat.
[When] like a stone the waters are congealed, and the face of the deep is bound in fetters?
31 Kunt gij de liefelijkheden van het Zevengesternte binden, of de strengen des Orions losmaken?
Canst thou bind together the chains of the Pleiades, or loosen the bands of Orion?
32 Kunt gij de Mazzaroth voortbrengen op haar tijd, en den Wagen met zijn kinderen leiden?
Canst thou bring forth the constellations of the zodiac, each in its season? or canst thou guide the Bear with its young?
33 Weet gij de verordeningen des hemels, of kunt gij deszelfs heerschappij op de aarde bestellen?
Knowest thou the laws of heaven? or dost thou appoint its rule on the earth?
34 Kunt gij uw stem tot de wolken opheffen, opdat een overvloed van water u bedekke?
Canst thou lift up to the clouds thy voice, that the abundance of waters may cover thee?
35 Kunt gij de bliksemen uitlaten, dat zij henenvaren, en tot u zeggen: Zie, hier zijn wij?
Canst thou send out lightnings, that they may go, and say unto thee, Here are we?
36 Wie heeft de wijsheid in het binnenste gezet? Of wie heeft den zin het verstand gegeven?
Who hath put wisdom in the dark clouds? or who hath given understanding to the bright meteors?
37 Wie kan de wolken met wijsheid tellen, en wie kan de flessen des hemels nederleggen?
Who ordaineth the skies with wisdom? or who emptieth out the bottles of heaven.
38 Als het stof doorgoten is tot vastigheid, en de kluiten samenkleven?
When the dust is poured out as molten metal, and the clods are made to cleave fast together?
39 Zult gij voor den ouden leeuw roof jagen, of de graagheid der jonge leeuwen vervullen?
Dost thou hunt for the lioness her prey? and suppliest thou the food for the young lions,
40 Als zij nederbukken in de holen, en in den kuil zitten, ter loering?
When they are couched in their lairs, rest in the thicket, lying in wait?
41 Wie bereidt de raaf haar kost, als haar jongen tot God schreeuwen, als zij dwalen, omdat er geen eten is?
Who provideth for the raven his provision? when his young ones cry unto God, and wander about for lack of food?
