Exodus 17
1 Daarna toog de ganse vergadering van de kinderen Israels, naar hun dagreizen, uit de woestijn Sin, op het bevel des HEEREN, en zij legerden zich te Rafidim. Daar nu was geen water voor het volk om te drinken.
And all the assembly of the sons of Israel set forward out of the desert of Sin, by their removings, at the bidding of Yahweh, —and encamped in Rephidim, and there was no water for the people to drink.
2 Toen twistte het volk met Mozes, en zeide: Geeft gijlieden ons water, dat wij drinken! Mozes dan zeide tot hen: Wat twist gij met mij? Waarom verzoekt gij den HEERE?
And the people found fault with Moses, and said—Give us water, that we may drink. And Moses said to them, Why should ye find fault with me? Why should ye put Yahweh to the proof?
3 Toen nu het volk aldaar dorstte naar water, zo murmureerde het volk tegen Mozes, en het zeide: Waartoe hebt gij ons nu uit Egypte doen optrekken, opdat gij mij, en mijn kinderen, en mijn vee, van dorst deedt sterven?
So the people thirsted, there for water, and the people murmured against Moses, —and said—Wherefore is it that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill me and my sons and my cattle, with thirst?
4 Zo riep Mozes tot den HEERE, zeggende: Wat zal ik dit volk doen? Er feilt niet veel aan, of zij zullen mij stenigen.
And Moses made outcry unto Yahweh saying, What am I to do, with this people? Yet a little, and they will stone me.
5 Toen zeide de HEERE tot Mozes: Ga heen voor het aangezicht des volks, en neem met u uit de oudsten van Israel; en neem uw staf in uw hand, waarmede gij de rivier sloegt, en ga heen.
Then said Yahweh unto Moses—Pass over before the people, and take with thee some of the elders of Israel, —thy staff also wherewith thou didst smite the river, take thou in thy hand, so shalt thou go thy way.
6 Zie, Ik zal aldaar voor uw aangezicht op de rotssteen in Horeb staan; en gij zult op den rotssteen slaan, zo zal er water uitgaan, dat het volk drinke. Mozes nu deed alzo voor de ogen der oudsten van Israel.
Behold me! standing before thee, there upon the rock in Horeb, then shalt thou smite the rock and there shall come forth therefrom water, and the people shall drink. And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel.
7 En hij noemde den naam dier plaats Massa en Meriba, om den twist der kinderen Israels, en omdat zij den HEERE verzocht hadden, zeggende: Is de HEERE in het midden van ons, of niet?
So he called the name of the place, Massah, and Meribah, —because of the fault-finding of the sons of Israel, and because of their putting Yahweh to the proof, saying, Is Yahweh in our midst or is he not?
8 Toen kwam Amalek en streed tegen Israel in Rafidim.
Then came in Amalek, —and fought with Israel, in Rephidim.
9 Mozes dan zeide tot Jozua: Kies ons mannen, en trek uit, strijd tegen Amalek; morgen zal ik op de hoogte des heuvels staan, en de staf Gods zal in mijn hand zijn.
And Moses said unto Joshua—Choose for us men, and go forth, fight with Amalek, —to-morrow, am, I, stationing myself upon the top of the hill, with the staff of God in my hand.
10 Jozua nu deed, als Mozes hem gezegd had, strijdende tegen Amalek; doch Mozes, Aaron en Hur klommen op de hoogte des heuvels.
So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, to fight with Amalek, —and Moses, Aaron and Hur, went up to the top of the hill.
11 En het geschiedde, terwijl Mozes zijn hand ophief, zo was Israel de sterkste; maar terwijl hij zijn hand nederliet, zo was Amalek de sterkste.
And it shall be when Moses shall lift on high his hands, then shall Israel prevail, but when he shall let down his hands, then shall Amalek prevail.
12 Doch de handen van Mozes werden zwaar; daarom namen zij een steen, en legden dien onder hem, dat hij daarop zat; en Aaron en Hur onderstutten zijn handen, de een op deze, de ander op de andere zijde; alzo waren zijn handen gewis, totdat de zon onderging.
But, the hands of Moses, were weary, so they took a stone, and put under him, and he sat thereupon, —and, Aaron and Hur, upheld his hands—on this side, one and on that side, one, and so his hands became steady, until the going in of the sun.
13 Alzo dat Jozua Amalek en zijn volk krenkte, door de scherpte des zwaards.
So Joshua overthrew Amalek and his people, with the edge of the sword.
14 Toen zeide de HEERE tot Mozes: Schrijf dit ter gedachtenis in een boek, en leg het in de oren van Jozua, dat Ik de gedachtenis van Amalek geheel uitdelgen zal van onder den hemel.
Then said Yahweh unto Moses—Write this as a remembrancer in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua—that I will, wipe out, the remembrance of Amalek, from under the heavens.
15 En Mozes bouwde een altaar; en hij noemde deszelfs naam: De HEERE is mijn Banier!
And Moses built an altar, —and called the name thereof, Yahweh-nissi.
16 En hij zeide: Dewijl de hand op den troon des HEEREN is, zo zal de oorlog des HEEREN tegen Amalek zijn, van geslacht tot geslacht!
And he said—Because of a hand against the throne of Yah, Yahweh hath war with Amalek, —from generation to generation!
