Efeziërs 2

1 En u heeft Hij mede levend gemaakt, daar gij dood waart door de misdaden en de zonden;

and also you, he filleth, who were dead in your sins, and in your offences,

2 In welke gij eertijds gewandeld hebt, naar de eeuw dezer wereld, naar den overste van de macht der lucht, van den geest, die nu werkt in de kinderen der ongehoorzaamheid; (aiōn g165)

in the which ye before walked, according to the worldliness of this world, and according to the pleasure of the prince potentate of the air, that spirit which is active in the children of disobedience: (aiōn g165)

3 Onder dewelke ook wij allen eertijds verkeerd hebben in de begeerlijkheden onzes vleses, doende den wil des vleses en der gedachten; en wij waren van nature kinderen des toorns, gelijk ook de anderen;

in which deeds we also, formerly, were conversant, in the cravings of our flesh; and we did the pleasure of our flesh, and of our mind, and were altogether the children of wrath, like the rest.

4 Maar God, Die rijk is in barmhartigheid door Zijn grote liefde, waarmede Hij ons liefgehad heeft,

But God who is rich in his mercies, because of the great love with which he loved us,

5 Ook toen wij dood waren door de misdaden, heeft ons levend gemaakt met Christus; (uit genade zijt gij zalig geworden),

when we were dead in our sins, quickened us with the Messiah, and rescued us by his grace;

6 En heeft ons mede opgewekt, en heeft ons mede gezet in den hemel in Christus Jezus;

and resuscitated us with him, and seated us with him in heaven, in Jesus the Messiah:

7 Opdat Hij zou betonen in de toekomende eeuwen den uitnemenden rijkdom Zijner genade, door de goedertierenheid over ons in Christus Jezus. (aiōn g165)

that he might show to the coming ages the magnitude of the riches of his grace, and his benignity towards us in Jesus the Messiah. (aiōn g165)

8 Want uit genade zijt gij zalig geworden door het geloof; en dat niet uit u, het is Gods gave;

For it is by his grace we are rescued, through faith; and this is not of yourselves, but it is the gift of God:

9 Niet uit de werken, opdat niemand roeme.

not of works, lest any one glory.

10 Want wij zijn Zijn maaksel, geschapen in Christus Jezus tot goede werken, welke God voorbereid heeft, opdat wij in dezelve zouden wandelen.

For we are his creation; who are created in Jesus the Messiah, for good works, which God hath before prepared for us to walk in.

11 Daarom gedenkt, dat gij, die eertijds heidenen waart in het vlees, en die voorhuid genaamd werdt van degenen, die genaamd zijn besnijdenis in het vlees, die met handen geschiedt;

Wherefore be mindful, that ye formerly were carnal Gentiles; and ye were called the uncircumcision, by that which is called the circumcision, and which is the work of the hands in the flesh.

12 Dat gij in dien tijd waart zonder Christus, vervreemd van het burgerschap Israels, en vreemdelingen van de verbonden der belofte, geen hoop hebbende, en zonder God in de wereld.

And ye were, at that time, without the Messiah; and were aliens from the regulations of Israel; and strangers to the covenant of the promise; and were without hope, and without God, in the world.

13 Maar nu in Christus Jezus, zijt gij, die eertijds verre waart, nabij geworden door het bloed van Christus.

But now, by Jesus the Messiah, ye who before were afar off, have been brought near by the blood of the Messiah.

14 Want Hij is onze vrede, Die deze beiden een gemaakt heeft, en den middelmuur des afscheidsels gebroken hebbende,

For he is himself our peace, who hath made the two become one, and hath demolished the wall which stood in the midst, and the enmity, by his flesh;

15 Heeft Hij de vijandschap in Zijn vlees te niet gemaakt, namelijk de wet der geboden in inzettingen bestaande; opdat Hij die twee in Zichzelven tot een nieuwen mens zou scheppen, vrede makende;

and by his prescriptions he hath abolished the law of ordinances; that, in himself, he might make the two to be one new man; and he hath made peace,

16 En opdat Hij die beiden met God in een lichaam zou verzoenen door het kruis, de vijandschap aan hetzelve gedood hebbende.

and hath reconciled both with God, in one body, and hath slain the enmity by his cross.

17 En komende, heeft Hij door het Evangelie vrede verkondigd u, die verre waart, en dien, die nabij waren.

And he came, and proclaimed peace to you afar off, and to those near:

18 Want door Hem hebben wij beiden den toegang door een Geest tot den Vader.

because, by him there is access for us both, by one Spirit, unto the Father.

19 Zo zijt gij dan niet meer vreemdelingen en bijwoners, maar medeburgers der heiligen, en huisgenoten Gods;

Wherefore, ye are not strangers, nor sojourners, but ye are fellow-citizens with the saints, and of the household of God.

20 Gebouwd op het fondament der apostelen en profeten, waarvan Jezus Christus is de uiterste Hoeksteen;

And ye are built upon the foundations of the legates and the prophets; and Jesus the Messiah hath become the head of the corner in the edifice.

21 Op Welken het gehele gebouw, bekwamelijk samengevoegd zijnde, opwast tot een heiligen tempel in den Heere;

And in him all the edifice is framed together, and groweth into a holy temple in the Lord;

22 Op Welken ook gij mede gebouwd wordt tot een woonstede Gods in den Geest.

while ye also are builded in him, for a habitation of God through the Spirit.
