Spreuken 4
1 Luistert kinderen, naar wat vader leert; Let op, om inzicht te krijgen.
Hear, ye sons, the correction of a father, and attend, that ye may know understanding.
2 Ik prent u een gezonde leer in; Sla dus mijn lessen niet in de wind.
For, good teaching, have I given you, mine instruction, do not ye forsake.
3 Toen ik voor mijn vader nog een kind was, Een teer en enig kind onder het oog van mijn moeder,
For, a son, became I to my father, tender and most precious in the sight of my mother.
4 Gaf hij mij onderricht en zeide tot mij: Neem mijn woorden ter harte, Neem mijn wenken in acht, en leef;
So he taught me, and said to me—Let thy heart, lay hold of my words, Keep my commandments and live!
5 Doe wijsheid, en doe inzicht op, Vergeet mijn woorden niet, En wijk er nimmer van af!
Acquire wisdom, acquire understanding, Do not forget, neither decline thou from the sayings of my mouth.
6 Verwaarloos haar niet, zij zal u behoeden, Als ge haar liefhebt, u beschermen.
Do not forsake her, and she will guard thee, —love her and she will keep thee.
7 Aanvang der wijsheid is: doe wijsheid op, Doe inzicht op, zoveel ge kunt;
The principal thing, is wisdom, acquire thou wisdom, With all thine acquisition, acquire thou understanding.
8 Zij zal u verheffen, als ge haar hooghoudt, U aanzien verlenen, als ge haar omhelst;
Exalt her, and she will set thee on high, she will bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her:
9 Zij vlecht om uw hoofd een sierlijke krans, En verrijkt u met een prachtige kroon!
She will give for thy head, a wreath of beauty, A crown of adorning, will she bestow upon thee.
10 Luister mijn zoon, neem mijn woorden aan, Opdat ge lange jaren moogt leven.
Hear, my son, and receive my sayings, and they will multiply to thee the years of life.
11 Ik wijs u de weg van de wijsheid, Doe u de paden van het recht betreden.
In the way of wisdom, have I taught thee, I have guided thee in tracks of uprightness.
12 Gaat ge daarop, dan zal men uw tred niet belemmeren, Snelt ge daar voort, dan struikelt ge niet.
When thou walkest, thy step shall not be hemmed in, and, if thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble.
13 Houd onverzwakt vast aan de tucht, Neem haar in acht, want zij is uw leven.
Take fast hold of correction, let her not go, —keep her, for, she, is thy life.
14 Begeef u niet op de weg der bozen, Ga niet voort op het pad der zondaars;
Upon the path of the lawless, do not thou enter, and do not advance in the way of the wicked:
15 Laat ze liggen, ga er niet overheen, Mijd ze, ga ze voorbij!
Avoid it, do not pass thereon—turn from it, and depart.
16 Want ze rusten niet, of ze moeten kwaad kunnen doen, Ze gaan niet slapen, eer ze iemand hebben doen struikelen;
For they sleep not, unless they can do mischief, —They rob themselves of their sleep, if they cannot cause someone to stumble,
17 Ze eten het brood der boosheid, En drinken de wijn der geweldenarij.
For they consume bread gotten by lawlessness, and, wine obtained by violence, they drink.
18 Maar de weg der deugdzamen is als het morgenlicht, Dat gaandeweg opklaart, tot het dag is geworden.
But, the path of the righteous, is as the light of dawn, —going on and brightening, unto meridian day.
19 De weg der bozen gelijkt op een donkere nacht, Ze weten niet, waarover ze struikelen;
The way of the lawless, is like darkness, they know not, at what they stumble.
20 Mijn zoon, schenk uw aandacht aan wat ik ga zeggen, Leg uw oor te luisteren naar mijn woorden;
My son, to my words, attend, to my sayings, incline thou thine ear;
21 Laat ze niet wijken uit uw ogen, Bewaar ze diep in uw hart;
Let them not depart from thine eyes, keep them in the midst of thy heart;
22 Want ze zijn het leven voor hem, die ze vindt, Voor heel zijn lichaam genezing.
For, life, they are, to them who find them, —and, to every part of one’s flesh, they bring healing.
23 Bewaak dus uw hart met de uiterste zorg, Want daar ligt de oorsprong des levens.
Above all that must be guarded, keep thou thy heart, for, out of it, are the issues of life.
24 Verwijder van u een onbetrouwbare mond, Houd verre van u venijnige lippen;
Remove from thee, perverseness of mouth, and, craftiness of lips, put far from thee.
25 Laat uw ogen vrij voor zich uitzien, Uw wimpers zich richten recht voor u uit.
Let, thine eyes, right onward, look, —and, thine eyelashes, point straight before thee.
26 Effen de weg voor uw voet, Geef richting aan uw wegen;
Make level the track of thy foot, that, all thy ways, may be directed aright:
27 Wijk niet af naar rechts of naar links, Houd uw voet verre van het kwaad.
Decline not, to the right hand or to the left, —Turn away thy foot from wickedness.
