Spreuken 19
1 Beter een arme, die onberispelijk wandelt, Dan een rijke, die verkeerde wegen gaat.
Better is the poor who walks in his simplicity, than the rich who twists his lips and is unwise.
2 Zonder verstand deugt zelfs de ijver niet; Wie te haastig loopt, doet een misstap.
Where there is no knowledge of the soul, there is no good. And whoever hurries with his feet will stumble.
3 Door zijn dwaasheid komt de mens op het verkeerde pad, Maar hij zelf wijt het aan Jahweh!
The foolishness of a man undermines his steps. And then he seethes in his soul against God.
4 Rijkdom maakt vele vrienden, Een arme raakt zijn vrienden kwijt.
Riches add many friends. But from the pauper, even those whom he had become separated.
5 Een onbetrouwbaar getuige blijft niet ongestraft; Wie leugens verspreidt, zal niet ontkomen.
A false witness shall not go unpunished. And whoever speaks lies will not escape.
6 Velen dingen naar de gunst van een voorname; Wie geschenken geeft, heeft allen tot vriend.
Many honor the character of one who is powerful, and there are friends for a giver of gifts.
7 Als een arme al door zijn broers wordt gehaat, Hoever zullen zijn vrienden zich dan van hem terugtrekken! Wie te veel spreekt, wordt een meester in de boosheid; Wie woorden najaagt, ontkomt niet.
The brothers of the poor man hate him. Moreover, even his friends have withdrawn far from him. Whoever pursues only words shall have nothing.
8 Wie verstand verwerft, heeft zichzelven lief; Wie inzicht bewaart, zal het goede ondervinden.
But whoever possesses reason loves his own soul. And one who guards prudence shall discover good things.
9 Een onbetrouwbaar getuige blijft niet ongestraft; Wie leugens verspreidt, zal omkomen.
A false witness shall not go unpunished. And whoever speaks lies will perish.
10 Weelde staat een dwaas evenmin, Als een knecht het heersen over vorsten.
Fine things are not fitting for the foolish, nor is it fitting for a servant to rule over princes.
11 Wijsheid maakt den mens lankmoedig; Hij gaat er groot op, een misstap te vergeven.
The doctrine of a man is known through patience. And his glory is to pass beyond iniquities.
12 Een toornig koning brult als een leeuw, Maar als dauw op het groen is zijn gunst.
Like the roaring of a lion, so also is the wrath of a king. And his cheerfulness is like the dew upon the grass.
13 Een dwaas kind is een ramp voor zijn vader, Het getwist van een vrouw een gestadig druppelend lek.
A foolish son is the grief of his father. And an argumentative wife is like a roof that is continually leaking.
14 Huis en have worden van vader geërfd, Maar een verstandige vrouw komt van Jahweh.
A house and its riches are given by parents. But a prudent wife is particularly from the Lord.
15 Luiheid verwekt een diepe slaap, Een trage geest moet honger lijden.
Laziness sends one into a deep sleep, and a dissolute soul will go hungry.
16 Wie de geboden in acht neemt, behoedt zichzelf; Wie niet past op zijn wandel, zal sterven.
Whoever guards a commandment guards his own soul. But whoever neglects his own way will die.
17 Wie goed is voor een arme, leent aan Jahweh; Hij zal hem zijn weldaad vergelden.
Whoever is merciful to the poor lends to the Lord. And he will repay him for his efforts.
18 Tuchtig uw kind, zo lang er nog hoop is; Maar laat u niet vervoeren tot toorn.
Teach your son; do not despair. But do not set your soul toward putting him to death.
19 Een driftig mens zal moeten boeten; Wilt ge hem helpen, ge maakt het nog erger.
Whoever is impatient will sustain damage. And when it has been taken away, he will set up another.
20 Luister naar raad, en neem vermaning aan, Opdat ge tenslotte wijs moogt zijn.
Listen to counsel and take up discipline, so that you may be wise in your latter days.
21 Vele plannen gaan er om in den mens, Maar het besluit van Jahweh, dàt komt tot stand.
There are many intentions in the heart of a man. But the will of the Lord shall stand firm.
22 Goedheid strekt den mens tot gewin, Beter arm te zijn dan wreed
An indigent man is merciful. And a pauper is better than a deceitful man.
23 Het ontzag voor Jahweh leidt ten leven; Men rust dan tevreden, niet door rampen bezocht.
The fear of the Lord is unto life. And he shall linger in plentitude, without being visited by disaster.
24 Als een luiaard zijn hand in de schotel heeft gestoken, Brengt hij haar nog niet eens naar de mond.
The lazy conceals his hand under his arm, and he will not so much as bring it to his mouth.
25 Slaat ge een spotter, dan wordt de onervarene wijs; Vermaant ge een verstandig mens, hij leert er nog uit.
When the pestilent are scourged, the foolish will become wiser. But if you chastise the wise, he will understand discipline.
26 Wie zijn vader mishandelt, zijn moeder verjaagt, Is een kind, dat beschaamt en te schande maakt.
Whoever afflicts his father and flees from his mother is disreputable and unhappy.
27 Mijn zoon, houdt ge op, naar vermaning te luisteren, Dan dwaalt ge af van verstandige taal.
Son, do not cease listening to doctrine, and do not be ignorant of the sermons of knowledge.
28 Een kwaadwillige getuige spot met het recht, De mond der bozen stort onrecht uit.
An unjust witness ridicules judgment. And the mouth of the impious devours iniquity.
29 Voor de spotters liggen roeden gereed, En slagen voor de rug van de dwazen.
Judgments are prepared for those who ridicule. And striking hammers are prepared for the bodies of the foolish.
