Spreuken 17
1 Beter een droog stuk brood met vrede erbij, Dan een huis vol feestmaaltijden en twist.
Better [is] a dry morsel, and rest with it, Than a house full of the sacrifices of strife.
2 Een verstandige knecht heeft meer te zeggen dan een ontaarde zoon, En deelt met diens broeders de erfenis.
A wise servant rules over a son causing shame, And he apportions an inheritance in the midst of brothers.
3 De smeltkroes voor het zilver, de oven voor het goud; Maar de harten toetst Jahweh!
A refining pot [is] for silver, and a furnace for gold, And the trier of hearts [is] YHWH.
4 De boosdoener luistert naar zondige taal, De valsaard heeft oor voor heilloze woorden.
An evildoer is attentive to lips of vanity, Falsehood is giving ear to a mischievous tongue.
5 Wie een arme bespot, smaadt zijn Schepper; Wie leedvermaak heeft, blijft niet ongestraft.
Whoever is mocking at the poor Has reproached his Maker, Whoever is rejoicing at calamity is not acquitted.
6 Kleinkinderen zijn de kroon der grijsaards, Vaders de trots van hun kinderen.
Sons’ sons [are] the crown of old men, And the glory of sons [are] their fathers.
7 Als oprechte taal een dwaas niet staat, Past een edelman zeker geen leugentaal.
A lip of excellence is not fitting for a fool, much less a lip of falsehood for a noble.
8 Het geschenk is een toversteen voor wie het geeft; Waarheen hij zich wendt, hij heeft succes.
A stone of grace [is] the bribe in the eyes of its possessors, Wherever it turns, it prospers.
9 Wie een misdaad bemantelt, zoekt de vrede te bewaren; Wie de zaak weer ophaalt, brengt onenigheid tussen vrienden.
Whoever is covering transgression is seeking love, And whoever is repeating a matter Is separating a familiar friend.
10 Op een verstandig mens maakt één vermaning meer indruk, Dan honderd slagen op een dwaas.
Rebuke comes down on the intelligent More than one hundred stripes on a fool.
11 Een boze zoekt enkel verzet; Daarom stuurt men een wreden bode op hem af.
An evil man seeks only rebellion, And a fierce messenger is sent against him.
12 Beter een berin te ontmoeten, van haar jongen beroofd, Dan een dwaas in zijn dwaasheid.
The meeting of a bereaved bear by a man, And—not a fool in his folly.
13 Als iemand goed met kwaad vergeldt, Zal van zijn huis het kwaad niet wijken.
Whoever is returning evil for good, Evil does not move from his house.
14 Als ruzie ontstaat, is het hek van de dam; Bind dus in, voor de twist losbarst.
The beginning of contention [is] a letting out of waters, And leave the strife before it is meddled with.
15 Wie een boosdoener vrijspreekt en een onschuldige veroordeelt, Zijn beiden een even grote gruwel voor Jahweh.
Whoever is justifying the wicked, And condemning the righteous, Even both of these [are] an abomination to YHWH.
16 Waartoe dient geld in de hand van een dwaas, Om wijsheid te kopen, als hij toch geen verstand heeft?
Why [is] this—a price in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, And a heart—there is none?
17 Een vriend laat altijd zijn genegenheid blijken, In tijd van nood toont hij zich als een broeder.
The friend is loving at all times, And a brother is born for adversity.
18 Hoe kortzichtig de mens, die handslag geeft, En zich borg stelt voor zijn naaste.
A man lacking heart is striking hands, He becomes a guarantor before his friend.
19 Wie op ruzie gesteld is, is op zonde gesteld; Wie hooghartig spreekt, zoekt zijn eigen val.
Whoever is loving transgression is loving debate, Whoever is making his entrance high is seeking destruction.
20 Een vals karakter zal geen zegen ondervinden; Wie zijn woorden verdraait, zal in het ongeluk storten.
The perverse of heart does not find good, And the [one] turned in his tongue falls into evil.
21 Wie een domoor verwekt heeft, heeft zich hartzeer bezorgd; De vader van een zot kent geen vreugde.
Whoever is begetting a fool has affliction for it, Indeed, the father of a fool does not rejoice.
22 Een blij hart doet het lichaam goed, Neerslachtigheid verdort het gebeente.
A rejoicing heart does good to the body, And a struck spirit dries the bone.
23 De boze neemt een geschenk uit de buidel aan, Om de wegen van het recht te verdraaien.
The wicked takes a bribe from the bosom, To turn aside the paths of judgment.
24 De verstandige houdt de wijsheid voor ogen, De ogen van een domoor dwalen af naar de uithoeken der aarde.
The face of the intelligent [is] to wisdom, And the eyes of a fool—at the end of the earth.
25 Een dom kind is een ergernis voor zijn vader, Een verdriet voor haar, die het baarde.
A foolish son [is] a provocation to his father, And bitterness to her bearing him.
26 Onschuldigen beboeten is al niet goed; Maar edele mensen slaan, gaat alle perken te buiten!
Also, [it] is not good to fine the righteous, To strike nobles for uprightness.
27 Wie verstandig is, is spaarzaam met zijn woorden; Een man van ervaring is koelbloedig.
One acquainted with knowledge is sparing his words, And the cool of temper [is] a man of understanding.
28 Als hij zwijgt, geldt zelfs een dwaze voor wijs; Als hij zijn mond maar houdt, voor verstandig.
Even a fool keeping silence is reckoned wise, He who is shutting his lips [seems] intelligent!
