Numeri 17

1 Jahweh sprak tot Moses:

Then spake Yahweh unto Moses, saying:

2 Beveel de Israëlieten de staf van al hun stamvorsten te brengen, van elke stam één, dus twaalf staven. Schrijf ieders naam op zijn staf.

Speak unto the sons of Israel and take of them one staff each for an ancestral house of all their princes, by their ancestral houses, twelve staves, —each man’s name, shalt thou write upon his staff;

3 Maar op de staf van Levi moet ge de naam van Aäron schrijven; want ook voor hun stamhoofd moet er een staf zijn.

and, Aaron’s name, shalt thou write upon the staff of Levi, —for, one staff, shall there be for the head of their ancestral house.

4 Leg ze dan in de openbaringstent voor de verbondstafelen neer, waar Ik Mij aan u openbaar.

Then shalt thou lay them up in the tent of meeting, —before the testimony, where I meet with you.

5 De staf van den man, dien Ik uitkies, zal gaan bloeien. Zo zal Ik het gemor van de Israëlieten tegen u tot zwijgen brengen.

So shall it come to pass, that, the man whom I shall choose, his staff, shall bud, —so will I cause to cease from against me the murmurings of the sons of Israel, wherewith they, are murmuring against you.

6 Moses bracht het aan de Israëlieten over, en al hun stamhoofden gaven hem ieder een staf; dus twaalf staven, voor iedere stam één; ook de staf van Aäron bevond zich daarbij.

And Moses spake unto the sons of Israel and every one of their princes gave unto him, a staff apiece, for each prince, by their ancestral houses, twelve staves, —and the staff of Aaron, was in the midst of their staves.

7 Moses legde die staven voor het aanschijn van Jahweh in de openbaringstent neer.

So Moses laid up the staves before Yahweh, —in the tent of the testimony.

8 Toen Moses de volgende dag in de verbondstent kwam: waarachtig, daar was de staf van Aäron, die aan de stam van Levi behoorde, gaan bloeien; hij had knoppen en bloesem en droeg rijpe amandelen.

And it came to pass, on the morrow, that Moses entered into the tent of the testimony; and lo! the staff of Aaron for the house of Levi, had budded, —yea it had brought forth buds and bloomed blossoms, and borne ripe almonds.

9 Moses nam al de staven voor het aanschijn van Jahweh weg, en bracht ze naar alle Israëlieten; deze zagen het ook, en iedereen nam zijn eigen staf terug.

So then Moses brought forth all the staves, from before Yahweh, unto all the sons of Israel, —and they saw and took, each man his own staff.

10 Toen sprak Jahweh tot Moses: Leg de staf van Aäron weer voor de verbondstafelen neer, om hem te bewaren als een waarschuwing voor de weerspannigen, en maak daarmee een eind aan hun morren, opdat zij niet sterven.

And Yahweh said unto Moses—Put back the rod of Aaron, before the testimony, to be kept as a sign unto such as are perverse, —that thou mayest bring to an end their murmurings against me that they die not.

11 En Moses deed, wat Jahweh hem bevolen had.

Thus did Moses, —as Yahweh commanded him, so, did he.

12 Maar nu zeiden de Israëlieten tot Moses: Ach, wij sterven, wij gaan te gronde, wij komen allemaal om!

Then spake the sons of Israel unto Moses saying: Lo! we have breathed our last—we are lost, we are, all, lost:

13 Want iedereen sterft, die tot de tabernakel van Jahweh nadert! Moeten wij dan allen sterven?

whosoever draweth near—draweth near—unto the habitation of Yahweh, dieth, —are we ever to have made an end of breathing our last?
