Numeri 13
1 Daar sprak Jahweh tot Moses:
And there, the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
2 Zend mannen uit, om het land Kanaän te verkennen, dat Ik aan Israëls kinderen zal geven; uit iedere vaderstam moet ge één man zenden en allen moeten het aanvoerders zijn.
“Send men, who may examine the land of Canaan, which I will give to the sons of Israel, one from the rulers of each tribe.”
3 Moses zond hen dus op Jahweh’s bevel uit de woestijn Paran op weg. Al die mannen waren hoofden van de Israëlieten,
Moses did what the Lord had commanded, sending, from the desert of Paran, leading men, whose names are these:
4 en dit zijn hun namen: Uit de stam Ruben Sjammóea, de zoon van Zakkoer;
from the tribe of Ruben, Shammua the son of Zaccur;
5 uit de stam Simeon Sjafat, de zoon van Chori;
from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori;
6 uit de stam Juda Kaleb, de zoon van Jefoenne;
from the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh;
7 uit de stam Issakar Jigal, de zoon van Josef;
from the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph;
8 uit de stam Efraïm Hosjéa, de zoon van Noen;
from the tribe of Ephraim, Hosea the son of Nun;
9 uit de stam Benjamin Palti, de zoon van Rafoe;
from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu;
10 uit de stam Zabulon Gaddiël, de zoon van Sodi;
from the tribe of Zebulon, Gaddiel the son of Sodi;
11 uit de stam Josef en wel uit de stam Manasse Gaddi, de zoon van Soesi;
from the tribe of Joseph, of the scepter of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi;
12 uit de stam Dan Ammiël, de zoon van Gemalli;
from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli;
13 uit de stam Aser Setoer, de zoon van Mikaël;
from the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael;
14 uit de stam Neftali Nachbi, de zoon van Wofsi;
from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi;
15 uit de stam Gad Geoeël, de zoon van Maki.
from the tribe of Gad, Guel the son of Machi.
16 Dit waren de namen der mannen, die Moses uitzond, om het land te verkennen; maar Moses noemde Hosjéa, den zoon van Noen, Josuë.
These are the names of the men, whom Moses sent to examine the land. And he called Hosea, the son of Nun, Joshua.
17 Moses zond ze dus uit, om het land Kanaän te verkennen, en zei hun: Trekt hier de Négeb in, en bestijgt het bergland.
And so, Moses sent them to examine the land of Canaan, and he said to them: “Ascend by the south side. And when you arrive at the mountains,
18 Ziet, hoe het met het land is gesteld; of het volk, dat er woont, sterk is of zwak, gering of talrijk;
consider the land, as to what kind it may be, and the people, who are its inhabitants, whether they may be strong or weak, whether they may be few in number or many,
19 of het land, waarin het woont, vruchtbaar of dor is: of de steden, die het bewoont, open zijn of versterkt;
and the land itself, whether it is good or bad, what kind of cities, walled or without walls,
20 of de bodem vet is of schraal; of er bomen zijn of niet; toont, dat ge moed hebt. Brengt ook wat vruchten van het land mee; het was toen juist de tijd der eerste druiven.
the soil, rich or barren, forested or without trees. Be strong, and bring us some of the fruits of the land.” Now it was the time when the first ripe grapes were ready to be eaten.
21 Zij trokken dan uit, om het land te verkennen van de woestijn Sin tot aan Rechob bij Chamat.
And when they had ascended, they explored the land from the desert of Sin, all the way to Rehob, as one enters into Hamath.
22 Zij trokken de Négeb in, en bereikten Hebron, waar de Anakskinderen Achiman, Sjesjai en Talmai woonden; Hebron was zeven jaar eerder gebouwd dan het egyptische Sóan.
And they ascended by the south side. And they arrived at Hebron, where there were Ahiman and Shishai and Talmai, the sons of Anak. For Hebron was founded seven years before Tanis, the city of Egypt.
23 Zij drongen tot aan de vallei Esjkol door, waar zij een wijnrank met een druiventros afsneden, die zij met hun tweeën aan een stok moesten dragen; bovendien nog wat granaatappels en vijgen.
And continuing on as far as the Torrent of the Cluster of Grapes, they cut off a vine with its grapes, which two men carried on a board. Likewise, they took from the pomegranates and the figs of that place,
24 Men noemt die plaats Esjkol-vallei om de druiventros, die de Israëlieten daar hadden afgesneden.
which was called Nehel Eshcol, that is, the Torrent of the Cluster of Grapes, because the sons of Israel had carried a cluster of grapes from there.
25 Na het land te hebben verkend, keerden zij veertig dagen later terug,
And those exploring the land returned after forty days, having circulated through the entire region.
26 en gingen naar Moses en Aäron en heel de gemeenschap der Israëlieten in de woestijn Paran te Kadesj, waar zij hun en heel de gemeenschap verslag uitbrachten, en hun de vruchten van het land lieten zien.
And they went to Moses and Aaron, and to the entire assembly of the sons of Israel in the desert of Paran, which is in Kadesh. And speaking to them, and to the entire multitude, they showed them the fruits of the land.
27 Zij vertelden hem: Wij zijn dan in het land geweest, waar gij ons hebt heengezonden, en het druipt werkelijk van melk en honing; hier hebt ge zijn vruchten.
And they explained, saying: “We went into the land, to which you sent us, which, it is true, flows with milk and honey, as one can know by these fruits.
28 Maar het volk, dat het land bewoont, is sterk en de steden zijn ontoegankelijk en zeer groot; bovendien hebben wij daar de Anakskinderen gezien.
But it has very strong occupants, and the cities are great and also walled. We saw the race of Anak there.
29 De Amalekieten wonen in de Négeb; de Chittieten, Jeboesieten en Amorieten in de bergen: en de Kanaänieten langs de zee en langs de oever van de Jordaan.
Amalek lives in the south. The Hethite, and the Jebusite, and the Amorite live in the mountains. And truly, the Canaanite stays near the sea and around the streams of the Jordan.”
30 Kaleb trachtte nog het volk, dat om Moses stond, gerust te stellen, en sprak: Laat ons zo gauw mogelijk optrekken, en het veroveren; want we kunnen het gemakkelijk aan!
During these events, Caleb, to restrain the murmuring of the people who rose up against Moses, said, “Let us ascend and possess the land, for we will be able to obtain it.”
31 Maar de mannen, die met hem waren opgetrokken, beweerden: We kunnen niet oprukken tegen dat volk; want het is sterker dan wij.
Yet truly, the others, who had been with him, were saying, “By no means are we able to ascend to this people, because they are stronger than we are.”
32 En nu begonnen ze onder de Israëlieten allerlei praatjes te vertellen over het land, dat zij hadden verkend, en zeiden: Het land, dat we hebben doorkruist, om het te verkennen, verslindt zijn bewoners, en al het volk, dat we daar hebben gezien, is vreselijk groot.
And before the sons of Israel they disparaged the land, which they had inspected, saying: “The land, which we viewed, devours its inhabitants. The people, upon whom we gazed, were of lofty stature.
33 We hebben daar zelfs reuzen gezien, bij wie wij wel sprinkhanen leken, zowel in onze eigen ogen als in die van hen.
There, we saw some monsters among the sons of Anak, of the race of giants; by comparison with them, we seemed like locusts.”
